Long, long ago, when all the worlds were still one, there was a place called Daybreak Town. Here, under the leadership of the Foretellers, Keyblade wielders spent their days collecting light for their Unions-and you were no exception, fighting the darkness alongside your pal Chirithy (that's me!). But then, one day, you made an unusual new friend who warned you there was more to this world than met the eye. Meanwhile, conflict was building among the Foretellers and Unions, one that threatened everyone's future-including yours.
I bought this book to gain the plot in place of playing the mobile game. I tried the mobile game for a bit, but I'm not a fan of playing games on my phone as opposed to a console.
This is told in the first-person perspective of the cat Chithiry, and also second person as is is "Your Keyblade, Your Story" addressing the reader as "you." I don't have a problem with this if it is done well, but this translation and writing is absolutely terrible. It was like reading an eight-year-old's fanfic. It would have been cool if they made this a choose your own adventure story in relation to the worlds, but kept the Union plot the same/required for the reading.
The plot with the Unions was slightly better. It was a bit more detailed and the writing/translation wasn't quite as cringy, so it was nice to get that at least.
Maybe 2.5- 3? I am not sure what to say about it. It was a weird read. It has different people we follow. We follow foretellers and a 'you'. I loved the bits and pieces of the foretellers. That was written well. The 'you' and 'I' felt weird and almost like fanfiction written by writing exactly what happend on the screen. 'you walked around the corner and saw heartless. You slayed them and walked to another corner, with more heartless. You defeated these too. Then you walked down the corridor and even more heartless. No problem for you.' stuff like that. It felt weird to me and not well written.
I would have loved to just follow the foretellers. Get to know them more and really understanding what was going on. Because it's still vague. Maybe some following of ephemer you lead you into the new union or something. Though I did like the ending with 'you'. It made it more personal. The battles were okay and it set the tone for the war.
The thing that bothered me though was that the 'you' is a boy. They probably have someone in mind for the role, but than just make it a guy and never name him. Now the 'you' was lost to me because I am a girl.
There is an open ending to this story and I wonder if they will give it another light novel or if they just leave a gap and let you start on Birth by sleep. I would hate that, because union cross is needed to understand how Ventus ended up in birth by sleep. I need a union cross recap.
KH wouldn't be KH when you don't end up with more questions than when you started.
You are drawn to Daybreak Town as a Keyblade Wielder, saving worlds from Heartless as Foretellers and Chirithy watch over the progress of their Unions...but dark secrets have begun to grind everyone's trust, and war seems imminent -yet could that be just what the Master of Masters wants? Kanemaki and Amano bring Kingdom Hearts fans a decently summarized rendition of the titular game, a bit clunky on its pacing but sweet and mysterious where is needs to be. Is there even a point to fight when the darkness seems so unstoppable?
The expectations are always low for novelizations or tie-in novels, and this one did its job pretty well. It's a good option for people who don't want to look up the cutscenes online but still want to understand the story. I do wish it had included the other half of this narrative, the story of unchained with the new union members, but maybe one day they'll release that (and maybe even Dark Road at some point). The player character is referred to as he/him in the novel which took me out a bit since I am a woman who played the game with a female character, but that is mostly unavoidable. I guess the translators didn't feel like committing to genderless pronouns, or they thought it would be too difficult and awkward. Obviously, I prefer the cutscenes, but this was a fairly decent experience.
Lovely little book. This is great for anyone who is unable/not wanting to play the Kingdom Hearts X mobile game, and just want the core story-line. It starts from the events of Back Cover and covers the events of "your" character, and the events of the Foretellers, all the way until the end of X.
Union Cross is mentioned at the end but not covered, hopefully we'll see a light novel for that come into fruitation soon!
Otherwise, a nice little story that sets the foundation for such an epic series!
Okay, no joke, I've been very lukewarm about the KH novelization so far, but this is actually a much neater way to get this story than any of the other ways it's been delivered to us so far. The browser-mobile game-movie trifecta was such a mess. Not to mention this does away with most of the padding (and obviously it doesn't take months between updates) so it's actually possible to retain all the information. I just hope someday this gets re-adapted as a full game rather than another cash grab, because it's such a good fucking story.
This was pretty damn good! Union Cross is my least favourite Kingdom Hearts game by far, but this novelisation made me realise how underappreciated the story of UX actually is. It cut away most of the Disney portions that dragged the mobile game and focused mostly on the Foretellers. The second person perspective was done well, too—I don’t think there’s anyone to narrate this story better than Chirithy.
A good prequel to Kingdom Hearts if you don’t want play the mobile game. It shows how and why the Keyblade War happened and who were the people who were responsible for the outcomes and the characters who tried to stop the bad outcomes from happening. Nice short book.
The book itself was an easy read and condensed the plot line of Back Cover but I was hoping it would add more of the story from Unchained and Union Cross
This was a very easy read for me and I'd recommend to anyone of any reading level and who enjoys the video game franchise. While I'm still confused by the storyline itself of Kingdom Hearts, this helped jog my memory of the actual app's story. It's been a while since I'd played the early version, anyhow. The unique thing about this book is that it's told in the second POV. Not a lot of novels can brag about successfully gaining attention that way, but while it's still a gamble for writers to do so, the reason being was, as I suspect, to keep the readers from guessing who the main character is (please tell us who it is already, Square Enix!). So, kudos for the cleverness, but I'm still wary of it coming off as "vague".
