Recovering from an accident was hell on anyone, but, for a stubborn guy like Carter, it was worse. No way would he be a burden. So he stayed away from Montana, where his best friend lived … and his best friend’s sister.
Until Geir and Cade ask Carter to check up on a dog delivered to a small town close by, but the dog never arrived. Considering this was one of the missing War Dogs that Titanium Corp was handling, Carter was happy to assist. Maybe even relieved as it gave him a reason to go where he’d been afraid to go before.
Walking into her partner’s office to find his dead body on the floor had sent Hailey down a nightmarish path that never seemed to end. Then it had started with Carter’s arrival. What else should she expect from the man who she’d always loved and who had rejected her time and time again. She’d hoped the attraction to him would have lessened by now, but it was even worse.
As the body count mounts, and the town takes sides, Hailey realizes that Carter was always the one to back her up, even when it meant he could die in this fight that’s gone to hell. Particularly when Carter finds the missing K9 dog, and his current owner is on the wrong side of the war …
Only Carter doesn’t care, knowing he’d always stand on the side of right, but maybe—if he was lucky this time—he wouldn’t be standing alone …

Carter has not visited his best friend Gordon since his accident. Carter is reluctant to visit Gordon because he thinks he will be a burden to Gordon and Gordon's sister Hailey hates him. Grier thinks that having Carter going to see his friend will go a long way to his healing. To give Carter the little push he needs, Grier assigns Matzuka (the next war dog on his list) to Carter. It looks like it is going to take a lot of luck to find Matzuka since the dog has been missing for 3 months. When Carter arrives he finds out that finding Matzuka is a lot easier than sorting out the mess that has he finds Hailey in. While Carter helps save his friends, he realizes that there is a fine line between love and hate. This book is definitely worth reading, I couldn't put it down once I started it.

Mans best friend and savior. Love this series. The struggle of the hero’s as they save these K 9 Hero’s. Also a great love story between Carter and Hailey and lots of hometown drama.
What a waste of money, this book is horrible. The characters are not developed well, they’re not memorable and the storyline was haphazard at best. Many characters are just downright insipid.
This story went all over the place and went from one crisis to another. No intelligent conclusion, just the end-of-story, last minute confession recorded on a phone.
I read two of the other books and rated them “3”, but this one just annoyed me from beginning to the end. I definitely won’t read more of this series.
Cater is an injured vet who works on building houses and other things for the Titanium Corp. He was badly injured and he chose to recover alone. He didn't want to be a burden to his best friend. He hasn't visited in years but he never forgot the time he spent with his best friend in Montana and he has given excuses for not visiting. However, Geir and Cade have plans to fix that by sending him to Montana to find one of the missing war dogs and perhaps mend a few fences and find love along the way.
Carter steps off the plane and into trouble almost from the beginning. He finds that his best friend's marriage is on the rocks as his wife has left him over an almost affair. His best friend hasn't been the same since his father died and Carter could not be there for him because he was recovering then and shutting out his best friend.
Hailey is his best friend's sister and they have a history. They never hooked up but there was once an awkward incident in the past as well as his now-defunct marriage that has made Hailey prickly and combative. Hailey doesn't know that Carter is coming to the ranch and well when she finds out sparks fly.
Haily leaves for work one day and upon arriving she finds one of her partner's dead body and things go from bad to worse. The town is controlled by one family and it seems most of the townsfolk are relatives or married into the family which makes trusting the sheriff difficult as he is distantly related. Carter offers to help Haily sort things out and in so doing he stirs up lots and lots of trouble. Heck finding the dog is a piece of cake compared to cleaning up this corrupt town and helping to solve a few murders and keep Haily safe even if she is prickly.
This story was fast-paced and had some twists and turns. I found myself wanting to know more about what happens with his best friend and his estranged wife. I liked Haily as she is sassy and very smart, not to mention extremely good at multitasking.
Carter is vulnerable but he doesn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. He is the same man as he was just without some body parts that he had before his military service. He had always thought that Haily was off-limits because she is her best friend's brother and he didn't want to ruin their friendship. Men! I love this series about rescuing military dogs with romance thrown in. I look forward to the next story.
Carter’s best friend, Gordon and his younger sister, Hailey, live in the same Montana town where War Dog Matzuka was headed months ago for retirement. Before his accident, whenever Carter had leave from his military service, he would go to Gordon’s ranch and help him by doing handyman-type work. Hailey had grown up hoping that she and Carter would someday marry and have a family together. But back then, she was so young that Carter would never risk his friendship with Gordon to even consider her. Carter married someone else, who divorced him while he recovered from the accident that left him with injuries too severe to continue his military service.
Also, timing being what it was, Gordon’s and Hailey’s father died right around the time Carter was facing all the surgeries and rehab in addition to the divorce. Thus, neither Carter nor Gordon had any opportunity to provide support to each other at their most trying times. At Titanium Corp Carter had been trying to find a way to reintegrate to civilian life and perhaps start his own home building company. Feeling less than fit and confident to offer his services to help Gordon at the ranch like he used to, Carter uses the search for Matzuka as a reason to visit Gordon, who is having his own problems with someone causing border issues with his ranch. Hailey, now thirty years old, is a partner in a financial services firm that manages several very big accounts. After having found some suspicious ledger sheets on the copy machine recently, Hailey had begun to think that someone was embezzling from their company. Again, timing being what it is, one of Hailey’s partners, Fred Longfellow, is found dead in his office from a gunshot the morning after Carter’s arrival.
So, we have Matzuka, who had been approved for adoption by Brenda Longfellow at the town where three generations of the Longfellow family live. We have the death of Fred Longfellow and suspected embezzler in his and Hailey’s company, and we have Gordon’s dispute with (wait for it…) the Longfellow family over the lines between their properties. Carter has literally walked into a trifecta of trouble. Wow! Great story, great people, lots of mystery in this small Montana town. Loved it!!!

I didn't think I could get attached to characters so quickly but this story did just that! Carter has a tool belt attached to his hips and a pencil behind his ear as he helped his Navy friends with another reconstruction project. He is now missing a foot, has a badly injured arm and hand and his recovery from his injuries as a Navy Seal is going well despite his wife walking out on him when she saw him injured. Cade is worried about him and has a plan to get him started back in life. Cade knows his friend is missing his dogs (wife took them) and has stalled about visiting his long time friend on his ranch in Montana. Carter felt he would be a burden and it was easier to not go. So Cade has a proposition for Carter involving a missing K-9 named Matzuka, sent to Montana but not recovered from the airport and has been missing for 3 months. So the story begins, adding his best friend in Montana has a sister who livens up the visit immediately with her less than friendly greeting then the next day finding one of her partners at work dead from a 'apparent' suicide which he accomplished with his non dominate hand creating suspicion. Kate (friend's sister) works in an investment firm, Carter has a degree and experience in finance unknown to others. These things only begin to touch the complications. The tale continues with 3 generations of "Longfellows" to muddy the waters. They apparently all but own the town and the youngest generation have created more than their fair share of havoc. With the ranch's property lines being breached, people winding up injured and/or dead, possible sabotage in the company and the missing K-9, this story was fast paced and difficult to put down in a good way! I was happily up reading way past any decent bedtime! The epilogue talks of Weston wanting to get in on the action. He just may do that with missing K-9 in Alaska. Shambhala is blind in one eye, limps and loves to listen to music. Weston has connections to family there too, I can't wait to hear more.
I love that this series is all about War Dogs and the heros that they are. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also about romance and finding forever love either.
Hailey has remarkable work ethic. She’s a partner/part owner in a financial company managing millions of dollars every day for her clients, she is also half owner with her brother, Gordon, on their family’s Montana ranch where she’s not afraid to sweat or get her hands dirty. Her determination to get where she’s going with her own hard work and by her own merit is admirable.
Carter, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, was wounded in action and has endured considerable rehab to be functional again. He is still looking for that second career that will keep him interested and motivated well into his senior years, he just has to keep himself busy during his search. He has neglected his best friend, Gordon, while he was recovering and now it’s time to pay him a visit and find the missing War Dog, Matzuka, and his adopted family. Little does Carter know, is that the local Longfellow generational family makes up most of the little town and runs things as they see fit including the local drug supply, are the ones who were to adopt Matzuka.
I appreciate Hailey’s attitude when it comes to seeing Carter again. She was interested in a relationship with him long before he was injured and he completely ignored her. He didn’t want to interfere with his friendship with Gordon by dating his buddy’s sister. Then he went and married someone else!
I really enjoyed this exciting story about small town issues that turn into murder, mystery and danger for Hailey and her brother. Hailey finds herself the only surviving partner of the financial company and several suspects could be very close associates working for her. Carter’s main focus was finding Matzuka, now it includes protecting and keeping Hailey safe.
This is the 7th book in the brilliant K9 series, although it is a standalone you are likely to meet up with old friends if you have read other Dale Mayer books. A number of retired military dogs have gone missing and a team of operators are determined to find them and re home them. Cater Brotherton is looking for a challenge now that his injuries have healed, he is an ex navy SEAL who's wife left him whilst he was fighting to come to terms with life changing injuries.Carter is invited to go to Montana, where his best friend Gordon lives, to try to locate a dog called Matzzuka, Gordon is delighted to have him stay on the ranch where he lives with his sister Hailey, Gordon's wife has left him even though they are both still very much in love, Hailey is not so delighted, she was heartbroken when Carter married even though they always bickered. Hailey is a partner in a finance firm and is worried that there may be some inside embezzling, when Hailey's two partners are found murdered is she the main suspect or is she the next in line to die. The whole town is run by the Longfellow family, they are very powerful people and they want to take over Gordon's farm and don't care how they do it, who can Hailey trust when even the sheriff is a Longfellow, how is Matzzuka involved with this family and can Carter retrieve him ? This is a lovely story of men who owe their lives to these dogs and doing their best to give them a happy retirement, it has murder, dog napping, embezzlement and of course romance. I love how the author deals sympathetically with the subject of infertility and the psychological effects of the people affected. I can highly recommend this book and I eagerly look forward to the next one.

Dale Mayer continues to amaze me! No matter how many books she writes she always creates unusual and exciting plots with lots of twists.
Matzuka is a retired war dog. The military sent him to a small town in Montana to be adopted by a loving family. Unfortunately, Matzuka never made it to his new home and now appears to be lost.
Carter has recently retired from the Navy after a long recovery from a devastating accident. His best friend, Gordon, owns a ranch in Montana, the town where Matzuka has disappeared. When Carter is asked to search for him, he uses Gordon’s ranch as his base.
Hailey is Gordon’s sister and also lives on the ranch. She has always been in love with Carter, even though he has never noticed her. She is a partner in a finance company where her two partners have just died. Hailey is an independent woman who is smart, courageous and refuses to take a back seat in the investigation of the deaths of her two partners.
Ms. Mayer’s plot is complex with lots of action and intrigue. Matzuka’s disappearance appears to be tied to the deaths of Hailey’s partners and to the recent shooting of Gordon.
In this book, there is a whole family of villains who are evil to the core. However, even though we know who the “bad guys” are, the author keeps the readers guessing how Hailey, Carter and Gordon will ever be able to crush their enemies.
All of this adds up to an exciting page-turner that will hold your attention to the very end.
As Carter recovered from a disabling accident he stayed away from his home town in Montana where his best friend lived (plus his sister was there too). But when Geir and Cade from Titanium Corp ask him to try and locate a war dog that is missing he is happy to help and reconnect with his best friend too. When Hailey walks into her business partner's office ad find him dead it starts a chain of events that never seem to end. Bizarrely it seems to coincide with Carter's arrival (although it is clearly not connected) but it does add to her disquiet at seeing the man she has always loved but always been rejected by. As the body count increases and the town residents take sides, once again it is always Carter who has taken her side but he is now in danger after taking the missing K9 from someone on the other side. Carter knows he will always stand on the side that is right, now he also starts to hope against hope that he will not be standing alone. Can everything get resolved and they live to get a chance at the HEA they deserve?
This is a lovely story that had plenty of mystery, drama and danger mixed in with a little romance after they got past the sniping at each other (which became old quickly). It was nice to follow the mystery as to who was doing what and killing whom which will definitely register with anyone who has ever lived in a small town. Well written and easy to understand. There was no need to have read previous books in the series.
This K9 Files series may well be the best K9 series in contemporary romance today. Geir and Cade's Titanium Corp has been tasked with locating several War Dogs who served their country and were shipped to new homes across the states. The missions are supposed to be more of a wellness check, but each dog seems to need the retired soldier who finds it as much as the soldier needs the dog. Then there's the added benefit of these brave, broken soldiers also finding love.
Carter and Gordon are best friends, but after Carter's combat injuries and months of surgeries and rehab, he hasn’t been able to face either Gordon or his sister, Hailey. Now Carter is headed to Montana to look for the latest War Dog, but when he gets to town, he finds more than he ever bargained for. Finding a lost K9 is the least of his worries, as danger mounts and the body count rises.
If you haven’t read any of the books in this series, you’re really missing out. They stand alone and can be read in any order, so Carter's book is the perfect place to start. With nail-biting drama and edge-of-the-seat suspense, this quick, intense read will hold you in its grip from the first page to the last. If you like second chances for a hero as well as his K9 companion, you'll love this riveting, heartfelt, fantastic read.

Carter accepts the task of finding the K9 Matzuka knowing he should have visited his best friend Gordon in Montana sooner. All is well between them but there is still quite a bit of animosity between Gordon's sister Hailey and Carter. They've been like oil and water for years and this visit doesn't appear to be any different.
Now the adopting family of the war dog said he never arrived but as Carter follows the trail that doesn't seem to be true. The contact isn't very forthcoming, but the person assigned to pick up the dog is withholding information.
Hailey is another matter, she was blindsided when she saw Carter, her brother didn't say anything about him coming for a visit.
Unfortunately everything is about to go haywire as Hailey discovers one of her partners dead in his office. That's just the beginning.
As the story unfolds, more death and more intrigue surrounds Hailey's business. The Longfellow name keeps popping up and not in a good way.
The way Carter finds and retrieves Matzuka is priceless and this town is truly sitting on a powder keg.
Plenty of suspense, corruption, family drama and the beginnings of one renewed and one new romance.
I can't wait for the next book in this series, the lead-in was perfect!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I definitely would. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the disappearance of this particular War Dog (WD) is one that kept me turning pages to get to the end. But there is more going on then just a missing WD. There have been several murders. Either the key suspect or the next murder victim, Hailey, is Carter's best friend's (Gordon) younger sister. Hailey has loved Carter for so long. But she made a play for him and was turned down. Then Carter married a b!t@h, a double whammy to poor Hailey. The sparks off of these two were hot. Gordon called it correct to Carter about Hailey's attraction but poor Carter doesn't see it.
I adored the dual POV format that the book was written in. Getting into both Carter's and Hailey's thoughts really helped me to thoroughly connect with them. The action was fast and furious. The mystery and intrigue just kept piling on. I couldn't read fast enough.
There was a sexy scene but it was tastefully written with nothing graphic in nature. I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone over the age of 18. This can be a stand-alone story BUT the entire series is really fantastic and shouldn't be missed.
While I've enjoyed this series, for some reason this story drew me in right from the start. Carter hasn't been back to Montana since his accident as he stubbornly didn't want to be a burden to anyone. Also, his wife left him while he was recovering. But when War Dog goes missing, Carter steps up to see if he can find Matzuka.
While his best friend Gordon is glad to see him, Hailey (Gordon's sister) is less than thrilled and actually a little rude when he shows up at the ranch. Seems she's had a thing for Carter since they were young and she feels as though he's dissed her twice.
But then things take a deadly twist Hailey's two partners commit suicide (or were they killed?), and Gordon and Hailey start having problems on the ranch. Are these situations connected? And if yes, who is behind what is going on? There are plenty of suspects to keep you guessing to the end.
And will Hailey and Carter get their happily ever after. There certainly plenty of chemistry between the two of them.
Carter is a wounded warrior who is trying to put his life back together after devastating injuries that caused his wife to walk away. Matzuka is a military war dog who has saved soldiers' lives and earned a comfortable retirement, but the family who adopted him says he never arrived.
Carter's best friend, Gordon, has been anxious for his buddy to come back to his Montana ranch that has been a home to them both. Hailey, Gordon's younger sister, has given up on her crush for Carter and has fully invested herself in the company where she is a partner.
Carter comes back to Montana to find Matzuka and to face his friends, injuries and all. But he finds the dog's whereabouts to be a mystery involving unsavory characters. Hailey finds her feelings for Carter are as strong as ever while her orderly life is taken apart by murders and dangerous threats to her and her brother.
Carter, Book 7 of The K9 Files, is an action filled page turner with characters to love and enemies to despise.

Another fantastic instalment from Dale Mayer. I’m a huge fan of K9 Files series and this book was another intriguing story. This story grabs your attention and keeps you glued to the pages till the end. Fantastic, I loved the whole book, waited a while for this one but well worth it. Full of dog and man action packed with all the characters we know from the series. I recommend to everyone to get into this series its very good love the dogs!! This book did not stop with all the different twists. Strong characters and love reading about K9 war dogs and what possibly could happen to them. Can't wait for the next instalment of K9 Files. Another book getting added to my all time favourites list for this author. Also added to my favourites series list too. Everyone should have a Dale Mayer book in their library and on their TBR list too. If you like adventure, drama, dogs, and suspense coupled with romance then this is for you. This is a very well written and entertaining story which I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend. Happy reading everyone!
Searching for a missing war dog gives Carter a reason to visit his best friend Gordon. Hailey is stunned to see Carter again. Hailey has kept Carter at arm's length to keep him from knowing her feelings for him. When Hailey's partner in their accounting firm is murdered, Carter's financial background helps Hailey determine what is happening at the accounting firm. One shyster family might be tied to a lot of intimidating events occurring in town. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This book kept me guessing how this story would resolve until the very end of the book. I really like Hailey and Carter. Even though Hailey often ventures into dangerous situations, she keeps a cool head. Since Carter was formerly in Special Forces, he is very handy to have at hand as they face growing danger. Their second chance romance was also very believable. I love this suspenseful book.
This is absolutely my favorite of the series so far. I find I keep saying that, but these books just get better and better. Carter has been through a lot, but a mission to find a missing War K9 is taking him home. And he walks into a mess. There is a lot going on in this town. Murder, property disputes, a family of criminals, a missing dog, and a woman from Carter's past. Hailey is shocked to see Carter again and he comes at a time when her life has been thrown into chaos. I wasn't sure if I liked her at first, but she grew on me as her character developed. This author has a knack for creating alpha males with hearts of gold and strong female characters. The K9 aspect is intriguing and tugs on the heartstrings. Things are wrapped up in a surprising way and the next book is set up nicely. I can't wait for Weston's story.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
When Carter is injured he finds himself at a crossroads both personally and professionally as not only is he unable to resume his career as a Navy SEAL but he now finds himself divorced as well. When he is asked by Titanium Corp to track down a missing dog not only will it help them, but it will also help him by allowing him to reunite with his best friend Gordon.
Hailey has always been attracted to her brother’s best friend Carter, but she has accepted that he doesn’t feel the same way. The last thing she needs is to have Carter back in town when both her home and her business are being threatened even if he may be the one person that could not only keep her safe but uncover the truth of who is behind it before it is too late.
Having to work together is the best thing that could have happened to Carter and Hailey as among the intrigue and twists they will finally have to acknowledge how they feel about each other.
Carter by Dale Mayer The K-9 Files Book Seven Carter Batterbridge has been working with Titanium Corp, helping with building houses for vets. When asked if he wanted to head to Montana to find a K9 War Dog that went missing, he goes. He's been avoiding his best friend for long enough. Gordon is a rancher and Carter has spent a lot of time there since his teens.
Hailey Wallerton, Gordon's younger sister, and Carter have always fought like cats and dogs. Hailey had a childhood crush on Carter but now she was all grown up and a partner in a financial firm.
When Carter hits town, murder and mayhem seemed to follow. He had a dog to find, but also friends to protect. Page-turning story of romance and danger. I really enjoy the K9 Files. **Sensual content language https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
4.5 Stars This is book 7 in the K-9 Files series and it features Carter and Hailey. She is his best friends sister and has been attracted to her for the past 10 years. Haley has loved Carter since she was a teenager but didn’t believe he held any attraction towards her. He even married and divorced another woman. Being rejected twice, once when she professed her teenage crush to him and the second time was when he married another woman, has made Haley a little hostile towards him. After Carter’s career as a Navy SEAL ended with a medical discharge, he’s returned to Montana to hunt down War Dog, Matzuka. What Carter finds is a town so overrun with one family that murder and mayhem are taking over.
The action, suspense and romance in this story line are fantastic! It’s the perfect blend. This is my favorite in the series so far. I can’t wait for the next one.
I had wondered why I hadn't persisted in reading this series... I think this one confirms why.
An absolute shambles of a 'plot'. Nothing made sense. Nothing. And there is zero resolution...
And what really irritated me? The Debbie/Gordon thread. Gordon had been flirting with the cook... whilst still married and living with his wife, Debbie. The cook left. Debbie left. Gordon really didn't seem to have any idea of how badly he had behaved. Just morally awful. Then, without any sort of discussion, everything is OK between them? I guess until Gordon decides to flirt with someone else. I don't care if there was no physical cheating... emotional cheating is very much on the same level for me.
Annnnd... I thought this was supposed to be a series about finding and saving ( if they needed it ) the missing War Dogs. Matzuka was hardly in this.
An all action book right from the start sees us with Carter, a jack of all trades, for Titanium security (Men of steel series) going on a mission to his best friends ranch to find Matzuka, an ex war dog assigned a home but didn’t arrive. Hailey is the women who has always loved Carter but he broke her heart.....twice. As the bodies start piling up it soon become clear that one family with lots of connections are responsible for the town. Can they find the dog and take down the family hell bent on ruining a town???? Some really great characters throughout the book and I thought Carter and Hailey worked so well together even though she felt the way she did. Can’t wait for Westons book because I know it’s going to be good.
Carter is an stubborn as they come and he has definitely met his match in Hailey. Carter has avoided home until Geir sends him after an Army dog that is missing. Once in town, he meets up with his old friend and his sister, who has always had a crush on Carter. Both Carter and Hailey have a knack for accounting numbers which comes in handy when both of the partners at Hailey's firm are murdered and she discovers someone has been cooking the books. But, Carter's military background comes in handy when they start dodging bullets and overthrowing an evil family branch trying to rule the town. Very fast moving and interesting book.

Carter never noticed or so it seemed his best friends sister. Of course, Hailey noticed him and once rejected well, she didn't need him either. Gorden wanted his buddy at the ranch Carter wasn't going there or anywhere unless he could make it on his own. Now wit Mazuka the War Dog missing and the Navy War Dog Dept wanting to know what happened to him. Carter heads to Montana to find a very special dog. Now he and Hailey are butting heads and people are dying and Hailey is right in the middle of it. Of course, I will not give any spoilers. This book is great and the K9 Files just get better and better.

WOW! Another FANTASTIC story by Dale. This is about Carter needing to make a trip to visit his best friend, Gordon, who happens to have a sister who is in love with Carter. Carter also needed to find the missing was dog. Hailey is in love with Carter but has been burned by him twice so she was leary of him. Now her two business partners were murdered but Carter did find Matzuka - the missing dog. Things get progressively worse when her brother is shot. The bad guys, give of them, were arrested for all the murders, attempted murders and other illegal activities. Once everything settles down, Carter and Hailey work on their happily ever after with Matzuka! FANTASTIC job Dale! I would recommend this book.
Awesome!! This was an excellent read and it had me reading as fast as I could to find out "who done it". The back story was well constructed and the primary and secondary characters were well fleshed out. I wanted to know them better but sadly as with all stories it had to come to an end. Sigh.
Hailey has been in love with Carter forever but he only saw her as his best friend's little sister even getting married to someone else! Hailey is a partner in a three person accounting firm. When she goes to work after the weekend, she discovers the oldest partner dead. The sheriff checks on the other partner and find him and his wife shot dead. Very suspenseful.
Carter is sent to Montana to find the War Dog Matzuka who was shipped to the Longfellow family but never arrived. No one knows where the dog ended up after arriving at the airport. Carter stays with his best friend Gordon and his sister Hailey. Hailey and her two partners own a finance company. First her partner Fred is murdered and left to look like a suicide. Then her partner Phil and his wife are found dead in their home. Is Hailey going to be the next victim? And who benefits. So while Carter still hunts down the dog he also helps Hailey find out who is behind the murders.
