I have always loved Raven. She always stood our and as she branded herself, a pioneer. I am glad that Christina and Boulder adopted her because I don't know any other Nmen who would have nurtured Raven's rebellious spirit. I don't even consider Raven rebellious, she is just someone who doesn't accept status quo. She bucks societal norms and she doesn't like to be told she weak or lacking.
Raven's acceptance into the law enforcement training academy was bound to make waves, but the change was more in Leo and ruling class of Nmen. Her tenacity and decision to solve a cold case led to Raven realizing love and also accepting that marriage won't make her less than her male counterpart.
As far as the story, the resolution of Dinah's death (Magni & Khan's older sister) revealed many secrets that impact the ruling family. I suspected Marcus Auerlius knew what happened but I am glad it wasn't him. Khan and Magni's seem poised to taking the country in a new direction, and I can't help but see Pearl and the other Motherland females written all over this decision. Slowly, and I mean slowly, there is a merging of ideals, and I look forward to the day the Nmen would be less misogynistic and Motherland citizens as less judgmental.
This series continues to be an intriguing look on society for me.

The Fighter, by Elin Peer.
Raven Boulder is the quintessential independent woman. She is fearless, brave, rebellious, humorous, loving and intelligent. She is also strong and obstinate and no one, NO ONE, not even those she loves, is going to keep her from realizing her dream.
And her dream is to be the first woman police officer in the male-dominated society of the Northlands. Right from the time she was a teenager to her present age of 21 in the novel, she has forged relentlessly toward her goal, and not a single male in this testosterone-laden society is going to stop her.
Oh, they cater to her from time to time, thinking that by giving her a little of what she wants they will be able to force her into the submissive role designed for women of the Northlands and control her. They simply do not realize the primeval force they are faced with--and to make this Elin Peer heroine even more impossible--she is black.
Her boss, Police Inspector Leo da Vinci, is half in love with her when he meets her, and wholly in love with her before the novel ends. But he has the awesome task of not only being her mentor, but also her protector in a society in which women are valued so highly to touch or harm one is to face a death sentence. And she doesn't need or want a protector.
You can imagine where this leads. Assigned to meaningless research as a novice police officer, she uncovers the cold-case apparent suicide of Dina, the fifteen-year-old newly married daughter of the ruling family, and finds her death suspicious. On her own, she begins to investigate and discovers enough to threaten the security of the entire ruling family of the Northlands. The chance of a new Civil War is not impossible if her research becomes known.
More I cannot tell you, except that this is an exceptionally brilliant detective/romance/self-help novel. I say self-help because Elin used to be a life coach, and the words that come out of the mouths of her fictional characters are like talking to friends about the difficult problems that confront us in relationships every day. They are always helpful, and because of her particular background, Elin has become a pioneer in an entirely new genre of romance literature.
Her books are not fluff, nor do they follow the oft-repeated templates of many current romance novels. Not that those books are not enjoyable reads. But they generally leave no lasting impression, and while enjoyable reading, tend to be shuffled into the background of "books read and enjoyed but not remembered."
Elin's books are in an entirely different category. Many of them deal with real societal problems. All of them deal with relationship difficulties of one type or another. All of them have sections that stick in the mind and cause the reader to reflect on them long after the novel has been read and set aside. And many of them deserve a re-read to ensure that the lessons the books teach are indeed understood.
Yet the books are never preachy or sermonizing. Confronted with a new idea or a new, even potentially taboo relationship, Elin's first impetus is to understand it, to investigate it, and never to judge it prematurely. That goes even for some of the most heinous actions some of her characters engage in. In this she reminds me of that line from one of Shakespeare's plays: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
The solution to the mystery of Dina's death results in a remarkable upset for the whole Northland culture, something Pearl, Khan the ruler's wife, has been urging on him since they became a couple. And the resolution of the love affair between Leo and Raven is a delightful romp.
How Elin Peer manages to weave romance, sex, mystery, and societal analysis together is really magical. Once you read one of her books you're hooked. And that may explain why, since she began writing, at least one of her books has risen to the top of Amazon's best seller list. Try one. You won't regret it.

One more hit with this ninth installment in the North men series.
It was full of so many things, like the insight done about Khan and Magni’s family past which was heartbreaking, plus the events occurring during Raven’s investigation were painful, but Mrs Peer was able as usual to mix hurtful times with witty and sweet ones.
While in The Dancer, the pain and hurt exchanges were between Willow and Solo, and it was only between them, with no influence outside them; here we get a new light from the past and all the dramas that ensued because of it and that everything can now change. This book is the new cornerstone of this series, introducing the next and also last one as a turning point for the world of the northmen.
I loved both Raven and Leo, I saw Raven growing up and becoming this fearless and generous young woman who wants only prove that women are not always fragile creatures to protect and keep behind wall or in cage, that some can be as resourceful and determined as any man. At time, her obsession at solving the ruler’s sister’s case was upsetting when she came to open hidden wounds and ugly secrets and didn’t see the danger of them being known. But then she did it with all the very best intentions, wanting to give closure to her friend’s family.
After, I was sometime wondering if she really grew up In the northlands as she toyed with Leo’s feelings when she should have known how sentiments are a sensible topic for the Nmen. They are often the first to fall in love then to get hurt, when the women need more time to understand what they feel and accept it with all its consequences.
Leo behind his tough exterior is a big teddy bear like most of his fellow countrymen. He was attracted by Raven from their first encounter, but she confuses him, plus having the responsibility for her security put him half-assed, plus how can he make a move when she sends him mixed messages.
But I do like the most is that Elin Peer gives voices to her characters. They make mistakes, say things not the right way but they try to communicate and by this are able to sort out what they really expect from the other and what they feel.
The romance gets it HEA here, but with the background plot moving a lot and the appearance of many recurring characters, any new reader will better enjoy this book if read after the others as it is a pivotal book.

Finished "The Fighter" and like the other 8 books in this awesome series Raven, Leo and the other persons got under my skin.
The story of Raven and about how she struggles to become the first female police assistant and her fight against her male colleagues and her audacity to Leo her boss. Her investigation of Dina's death and what it causes for the people in the book makes it difficult to put away.
As I have written before, I can only recommend the series.

This is another captivating, entertaining and well written instalment of the Men of the North series. I very much enjoyed Raven and Leo's story, though there is so much more to this story than just them. Be prepared for some real shocks along the way, and one heck of a build up to the final book, The Pacifist.
The push and pull between Raven and Leo was very nicely portrayed, it wasn't too angsty or over the top, but had just enough edge to hold my interest. The first person POV allows you to really know, understand and connect to both main characters, it also helped me to believe in their feelings and relationship. Whilst the book is written from both Leo and Raven's point of view, this felt very much more than just their story. At times it did feel as though the romance was almost a side story in this, there was so much else happening, however I still was very much invested in this couple and their HEA.

She is also pretty darn amazing at world building. In this 9th book of the Men of the North series, Peer showcases her abundance of talent by blending the elements of romance in a futuristic world with thrilling, nail-biting suspense in a multi-layered, captivating story line that keeps your brain guessing and your heart fluttering.
This was absolutely my favorite book of the series, hands down!!! I loved Raven's determination and independent spirit. I adored Leo's quiet strength and protective nature. And, their first, smolderingly-hot, intimate encounter was spiced with just enough tipsy curiosity and innocent seduction as to leave you (and them) yearning for a taste for more! Well, that is, until Leo’s big mouth sours the moment… Leaving Raven to wonder if she can get past the unspoken meaning she thinks she detects in what he thoughtlessly said.
But, what really elevated this book, for me, was the mystery surrounding the true cause of Dina's death. Dina is Khan and Magni's sister of whom no one ever speaks about. Raven's pursuit of what really happened and who could be responsible for her possible murder, drew me in and kept me spellbound right up until the shocking twist of the truth was revealed.
I am now eager and excited for Peer to unveil the last book in this series. But, I am also saddened that there is only one book remaining. I feel like these characters have become friends that have allowed me to be a part of their lives, and I will miss them when they are gone.

Nailed it.
Wow, there was so much going on in this story! Never mind the love story between a very strong minded independent woman looking to break into a ‘mans world’, but murder, political unrest and huge blows to the ruling family. I was really disappointed in the last book, but this ramped up my interest again. In every story there’s a little bit that trickles in to the next and as we head into book 10 (!) both the northlands and motherlands have been fundamentally changed. But there are still deep seated cultural differences and I can’t see everything tidied up in one more book.
But more about this story. I loved Leo. He was such a great balance of supportive partner and fierce protector. The love story was based on mutual respect and love, even when Raven acted immature. Such a great series!

The story of Raven in The Fighter made me laugh and cry both. I loved it! The ending is so satisfying because .....oops, I almost gave it away, lol.
The stories remind the reader that a world is only complete when it has both men and women in it. We need balance and we also need....spark.
The Men of the North is my favorite series. It's the only romance that my husband demands I read to him, especially when he hears me laugh out loud.

What can I say another great love story from Elin Peer. This time her main characters are Raven and Leo, both are fierce fighters that are stubborn as the day is long. Raven has her mind set on proving she is just as capable as a Nman to be protector. Now add the fact Leo is task to protect her. This is where the fun begins because they are attracted to each other and no one wants to admit it. Add in a mysterious case that leads them on a journey of realization that they complete one another and love is the fuel that ignites their passion.

This is a fantastic book. Elin Peer never disappoints. The depth of her characters never ceases to amaze me. I love the feisty characteristic in this book. I laughed, I got embarrassed for the characters, and I loved every minute of it. I look forward to all of Elin's books. It always saddens me when one of her series is about to end. On the up side.... There is still one more book to look forward to in this series.

The romance between Raven and Leo was just so so for me. It drove me nuts how Leo didn't want to want Raven. What I found more interesting the case that Raven worked, the death of Khan and Magney's sister, some 30 years before. The things that Raven found out along the way were shocking, but what Raven learned at the very end was just sad for the whole family. The changes that are on the horizon will be interesting.

Raven and Leo... what can I say about them? They became one of my favorite couples in the series. Raven with her never give up attitude and her determination to prove herself worthy of being the first Northlands female police officer is inspiring.
Leo is a book boyfriend I enjoyed drooling over while wanting to smack him from time to time for his Northlands views. He redeemed himself fabulously however, so he’s forgiven.
Some crazy things happen in this book and now I’m eager to read Mila and Jonah’s book to see what happens.

3.5 stars - writing this review about a month after reading and I honestly have forgotten almost all the details about the H&h and only remember the general storyline. I guess these two were just less than memorable overall. I remember nearly all the other books of this series better than this one.

While I wasn't entirely pleased with the story line *Cough* Mangi ( because I'm a fan of his), it was thought out and well played. Offering the perfect amount of shock value to throw you off while reminding us that Peer is capable of throwing anything at us. So don't get too Comfortable. I wish I could say more but I fear if I keep going I will spill the beans on this remarkable read.

3 1/2 bump up maybe
A lot happens in this one and a lot of changes for the north. Her investigation skills have a lot to be desired but the investigation moves along and show some real eye openers. I still don't know why it would matter. So then even more thing happen, all while Raven and her superior are falling for each other. I was a little upset that she had to fight to the point that she did and there were no consequences for fair play. It was really good more for the changes and the relationship. Her position on the police force was a total farce.
A lot happens in this one and a lot of changes for the north. Her investigation skills have a lot to be desired but the investigation moves along and show some real eye openers. I still don't know why it would matter. So then even more thing happen, all while Raven and her superior are falling for each other. I was so excited when I heard there was going to be another Men of the North Book and believe me Elin did not disappoint. I practically devoured this book in one go. I must admit this book has been my favourite so far. This is Raven and Leo's. Elin has compared to all the books has given us alot in this story. I love Ravens character she is type of woman I would like to be head strong, of course beautiful, determined and so much more. She is the first female to be trained to become a police officer. Leo is her commanding officer. Their banter is exciting, they flirt, they touch but in the start not in the way you think. The storyline is flirtious, intense, emotional and so much more. In this story compared to the previous there has been a change, maybe slight but Elin has definitely upped her game with this one.

The beginning of the book reminded me of G.I.Jane and then it turned into a mystery. I liked it! The book was fun, and Leo and Raven were cute together.

I can't believe this series is coming to an end soon. This is the second to last book of Men of the Nort and I cannot accept the fact that there will be no more Nmen after the 10th book. This is one of my most favourite series and not only because of the romance aspect but the whole storyline is amazing.
To whoever is on the fence on starting this series do your self a favour and start it NOW.
This is a kind of a stand-alone. It can totally be read on its own but in order to get the whole emotional impact and understand the characters of the book better,I highly recommend to read the whole series or at least books 1,2 and 5 (although believe me, once you start you will want to read all the books)
Little bit about the book: This is the story of Raven and Leo. Raven is a trainee police officer and she has as a mentor/guard/babysitter Leo who is an inspector. When Raven stumbles upon an old murder case she and Leo decide to solve it together and that brings them closer with each passing day.
Raven: She was adopted by Boulder and Christina (the couple from book 1 who by the way are still my favourite couple along with Magni and Laura) at a young age and although she was born in the Motherlands in her heart and actions she is an Nwoman. The only thing she hates and can't stand is the presumption the men of the North carry that they are superior in intellect and strength and that women cannot do what a man does and this is why she is set on becoming the first police woman. She struggles and fights all the way to becoming a training police officer and that is where she has a too serious and too rigid inspector as a mentor/guard. When, an unexpected chance is given to her to invastigate an unsolved 10 year old murder case she grabs it knowing it will be hell to pay if anything goes wrong because the girl who was murder all these years ago is none other than the sister of the current Ruler of the Northland.
Leo: He feels like he is caught between two stools. On one hand he has Raven- who is attracted to her- to babysit and give her easy jobs because she is basically a family of the Royal family and he was given an order not to put her in any dangerous situations. On the other, he has Raven complaining about her tasks and bringing chaos in the district department with her feminine curves and her sparky personality. What a man to do when all he wants is to give in to the attraction he feels for that woman and protect her without killing her dreams?
Thoughts: I have to admit I found it hard to love Raven. I did like her and I got where she was coming from and I understood her reasoning but something was blocking me from loving her and investing in her. In the beginning she gave me the impression that she was spoiled and way too stuborn. It was as if what she wanted she had to have no matter what and I didn't like that.
As for Leo, I don't feel like I know the guy. I liked him as a character and he was written beautifully but I wanted to read more of him.
Lastly, the storyline. It was- as expected- fantastic. I can't believe that I forgot about Dina. Thank God Elin Peer didn't and gave us the answers we wanted. There are twists and turns and you won't see stuff coming until they hit you in the face (figuratively speaking).

Changes for Nmen have been numerous with the opening of the border and Pearl's influence. That is very evident with Raven and her joining the police department as the first woman officer.A dream come true for her but it is definitely not an easy battle by any means. Her skill and cunning personality will take her far, doesn't hurt that she's been trained by the best. Leo doesn't want this duty. How can he work with her when all he does is dream of more. Well you know Raven isn't the sit back and do nothing type so when she comes across something that involves her friends the fall out may be more than she realizes. This book in the series combines their past and impacts their future. Not just for what can happen between her and Leo but for the impact of her actions. I love how strong and independent Raven is even when things go south. Ready to stand firm on her beliefs and her choices. She makes some choices and finds someone who will let her be who she is.
This author has done an amazing job on this series which opens your mind to all kinds of possibilities. Each book in the series has told an amazing story of overcoming traditional thinking and making huge strides. The men are strong and viral and hard and sweet. They love hard and believe that their family are theirs to protect and teach. It's such an awesome series. This one did have some moments which hit me at my core and just sucked the breathe out of me. There are big changes happening for this group in many ways and I will be here for the last book of the series. I love that while these are a series of books, they are also standalone reads. The thing is once you get started you can't help but love the characters and hunger for more. Truths will be revealed and the past that no one wants to remember will be front and center, all thanks to Raven's efforts.

The bigger they come, the harder they fall. Raven was born in the Motherlands but came to The Northlands when she was a young girl. She was adopted by a prominent family (the mother being from the Motlands.
In the Motlands, women can do anything. In the Northlands, men protect the women and they are not allowed to be police officers, doctors, etc. Raven was determined to be the first female police officer. Not if the men could stop her. Many men helped to train her, including Leo, her supervisor. He was tasked with keeping her safe so into the basement she was sent to review old files that were still open. She found a case that pertained to the sister of Khan and Magni who died a week after getting married along with many other deaths that followed. How did she die? Was it really a suicide or was she murdered? While investigating this case, Raven was a rebel and decided she did not need male guards to accompany her to interview people in her investigation.
The second time she did this, horrific circumstances occurred. Magni and Leo are in a chopper heading to rescue them when the chopper crashes. The aftermath - Raven and Leo have that sexual chemistry that ignites the pages but can they survive the tragedy and the circumstances? Magni - a man bigger than life itself - how will he cope with the limitations now that are part of his life? Will his family and friends survive his anger?
I have read all of this series to date. I love the situations of trying to merge 2 cultures that are at opposites in their way of thinking and living. The author does a great job in resolving situations to bring peace and understanding and compromise to the 2 cultures.

I need fight training!
Yeah, I'm a badass, or at least I feel like one after reading this book!
We already know Raven is a transplant from the Motherlands. We already know Leo is her boss. What we don't know is the struggle she has to make it this far in a male dominated society. The parallels we see from her fictional trials set in the future and our own nonfictional past are extremely uncomfortable. I had no idea that a fictional romance novels could display such realism. I hate to say it but I was so surprised that this story would have such depth! There were lighter moments and the relationship between Raven and Leo did progress during this turmoil even with Raven's mile wide stubborn streak. She was constantly defying her "mentor's" orders and got herself into one particular pickle but just when you could predict a happy ending...BAM! Their world's were thrown into major crisis. I did not see that coming! The fact that I got so upset was evidence that this is a spectacular book. I won't spoil the ending so will only tell you that there is an HEA. This is a must read romance that has action, mystery, personal growth, and very sexy scenes. I would recommend reading this series in order, sorry, but the previous books are so good that it's not a hardship!

Raven is following her dream to be the 1st female police officer in the northlands. Things aren't going her way no one wants her to succeed and when she finally makes it through training she's shoved in the basement with dust and the unsloved cases. Leo has been tasked to make sure nothing happens to her and she makes his life more then difficult. While helping her solve the mystery of the death of Kahn and Magnis sister they make some nation shattering discovery's all while their bond grows stronger.
While the romance is the heart of this story there's so much more going on. We get history of the ruling families lives, we get insight into what the future holds for the Northlands and of course set up for the next book! As always this this book doesn't disappoint with the massive world building the author has done. There's not a single secondary character or plot line that is unintriguing. With all the extras going on the romance could fall to the wayside but Raven and Leo shine bright in the story. I can't wait for the next installment!

What an amazing ninth addition to the Men of the North series! Having read all of them so far over a period of time, the only suggestion I would make is to jog my memory by making a list of characters with their descriptions at the beginning of the book (if too late for this one, maybe add to Book #10!)
This book was about Raven (who was trying to become the first female police officer in the male-dominated world of men in the North). Her mentor in her training is Leo, and he is very attracted to her right away. While they struggle with letting a relationship between them grow, I will just say that there are tons of events: mysteries to solve, dangers to avoid, deceptions to unravel, devastating personal injuries, and a huge decision about the government structure in the North. Through all of that, it is hard to imagine Raven and Leo could have an HEA, but their struggles are worth it. I highly recommend this book, as well as the others in the series!

Raven is strong, funny and an exceptional fighter trained by the best and she is determined to be a pioneer by being the first female police officer in the male dominated Northlands. But she is having a hard time being accepted and Leo, her mentor and boss, is doing everything to keep her safe and doing menial work, until a cold case comes across her desk and she is determined to proof she can be a police officer by solving this case. In the course of trying to solve this case, Raven discovers devastating family secrets, betrayal, blackmail, murder, she has to fight for her life and then something happens that changes lives. With the Men of the North series, Elin Peer has created exceptional characters that make appearances in all nine books and when something sad happens, it feels like one of my family and I feel their pain. I will recommend not just The Fighter, but the whole series as a must read!
