I don't often review books on Goodreads, but this one made actually made me want to say a lil sumthing sumthing real quick.

It's not often that I read poetry that actually inspires me to do something with everything that I feel inside. It's also not very often that I find a page that I read over and over again with tears in my eyes because F***K, I know that feel, I know that event, I know that. I loved that this touched me and I loved that this inspired me to hit up my inner creative chick and go work on some ish. Bomb ass collection of poems and everyone should follow homegirl's instagram @empris.durden

Thank you so much to Empriś for sending me your lovely book of poetry to review!

In the vain of notable poets such as Rupi Kaur, Upile Chisala, Alex Elle, and Amanda Lovelace, Empris Durden writes short poems conveying a range of emotions, yet her poems in this particular collection are centered around the journey to self-love and self-healing.

I read this beautiful collection of poems at the perfect time in my life; I am currently on a personal journey of focusing more on self-love and establishing a more plausible weekly self-care routine so I couldn't help but fall in love with this book from the very first page, well actually I fell in love with this book after reading the dedication and learning some of the author's influences for her poetry and seeing her praise some of the sisters who came before her who paved the way for this intimate publication of self-expression.

This book came to me at a time in my life where the insomnia in my wandering mind often keeps me up late at night about whether or not I will figure out what I want to do with my life and if/when I do, will I get my dream job and will it even be fulfilling? Where I am constantly reminded of the wrongdoings, regrets, and mistakes I've made in the past and how I've never forgiven myself for making them. There were countless poems that I enjoyed; poems that made me feel whole, made me feel seen, helped me to learn to let go of it all, sparked the fire within me, and poems that let me know that she too is "just a young black woman out here surviving somehow".

The poems contained in this collection made me contemplate, self-reflect, reevaluate, and made me stop and think for a while in order to let the words marinate and the meanings to settle and be deciphered before I could move on to the next one. It felt like I was reading the journal of a girl who had been through what I'd been through, sitting in on a therapy session, or listening to Nola Darling monologue a soliloquy of funny yet cathartic and emotive language through the form of sweet poetic anecdotes.

This was beautiful, wonderfully written, and a quick read that could easily be read, reread, and read again an infinite number of times as each poem can be interrupted in an infinite number of ways. I recommend this book of poems to anyone, especially us black girls, looking for a voice in this present time of uncertainty.

Rating: 🌺🌺🌺🌺/5 (Because we could all use a little bit more self love!)

This book came right on time in my life. From the minute i cracked it open I connected to the transition represented on each page. I could see my feelings of shedding what doesn’t serve my life on her pages. Self love 101: art of healing has blank pages which allow you to utilize for whatever you want... notes about the poems, notes to yourself, or questions and answers.embarking on a new mentally healthy lifestyle can be overwhelming but this books makes you feel like Empris is your best gal pal and your working it out together. Share this book with another good sis we all need this homegirl hug.

I was first attracted to this book because of the simplistic aesthetic but that isn’t what makes this one of my favorite reads thus far. As a reader, you are captivated from jump due to the raw authenticity spilling out of each page. Emotions and inner thoughts are portrayed effortlessly and the depth of each is then brought to the surface for anyone who has loved and is continuously learning to love oneself.

This poetry book is very relatable for young women who are growing to love themselves and finding themselves. It touchs on love problems, self healing, and knowing your value. I find this book very empowering especially for someone struggling with self-value, (I can say from myself being black women who struggled with self-value.)

I immediately connected with the author's work after seeing several of her posts on IG. After reading self-love 101, I am a fan for life. self-love 101 is an empowering, inspiring, and uplifting read. This book was right on-time, as I find myself going through a (major) period of transition and transformation. Self-love is a journey for many of us. The author's poetry is indicative of this. It's a process with many ups and downs. We go through it in our own way and our own time. Yet, it's what we go through during this journey that connects us. And that's the beauty of it all. And that's one of many things the author illustrates with her work. It's beautiful. Fresh. Thought-provoking. Intentional. Relevant. Truly a great read!
