The Mighty & The Mysterious: A Study of Colossians

Rate this book
The new Christians in first-century Colossae were not all that different from us today. They, too, struggled to understand who Jesus is, how Jesus alone reconciles us to God, and why things aren’t perfect in the Church.

In Paul’s letter to these Christians he had never met, he doesn’t say they should stop asking hard questions. He doesn’t tell them to stop searching God’s Word, to stop seeking spiritual wisdom, or to stop striving for unity within the Church. Instead, Paul focuses all of their questions and struggles on the Gospel of the mighty and mysterious God: the same God who created the universe, revealed Himself among us, and reclaimed us as His own through His Son, Jesus.

Walk with Heidi Goehmann through God’s Word to the Colossians and to you. Though many things will remain mysterious until we see our Savior face-to-face, you will discover that God takes care of you through the mighty and mysterious Body of Christ. That doesn’t make life together easy. But it does mean that life together connected to Jesus and one another is good and what we were created for.

This is an in-depth look at Colossians, a Bible book I’ve read but never really studied. I didn’t realize before how rich the theology is in this epistle. Heidi Goehmann does a great job bringing out the important points in a way that’s easy to understand, but not trite or over-simplified. I love how she explains some of the original Greek words, such as the study from Week 2, Day 4, that explains the meaning of “alienated” and “hostile” in Colossians 1:21. Such a beautiful insight! Each session took me 30-45 minutes to complete, but I took it slowly so I could absorb everything. I don’t know that it would take others quite this long. My only issue with this study (and others like it) is the video segments that supplement the workbook. Yes, they’re completely optional and the study works fine without them, but for those who want to watch the videos also, you have to pay extra for those. (And actually, they aren’t even available now at the site she provides, so I’m not sure what to make of that...) But video segments aside, this is a fabulous study. If you’re looking for a Bible study you can use either alone or with a group, this is a great option. I highly recommend it!

Our small group enjoyed this study too! This was the second of Heidi's studies that we completed. We love the depth of theology, her stories, her thoughtful questions, and her mental health and Christ connections.

Our only struggle was the amount to cover each week. It was more ground to cover each week than her Good Gifts study. We divided each week's lessons into 2 weeks of study (video and lessons 1 & 2 the first week, lessons 3-5 the second week) and that worked well. It was 12 weeks in Colossians but now we know a lot about Colossians! :)

This book is for anyone who loves the church, who has been hurt by the church, and who doesn’t quite know their place in the church. It’s jam packed with enriching extras that help the reader dive deeper into God’s intention for His church. You can study this with a group or forgo the video notes and work through it on your own -as I did.

Such a wonderful, uplifting Bible study on Colossians. Heidi is really great at ending every day with the love and grace of our Lord.
