Somehow, this author manages to maintain very distinct and separate writing styles across her works. The Medicine Wheel series has an easy flow, a small town feel complete with some angst, and while her style changes to fit the work (Man Down was a perfect add to K Bromberg’s world and MTBMW was magic of its own), seeing her ability to jump back into the vibe of her first novels is impressive. But what really impressed me was Fiona and her epic takedown of those who made her miserable.
I’ve loved Fiona since first meeting her, and Carter was perfect for her. They both have secrets that they need to trust each other with, and Carter needed to learn that he isn’t an island before he lost Fiona for good. So with the help of Mother Nature, Kevin (trust me, he’s awesome), and a few others along the way, he and Fiona manage to find their way to happy. Not only do we revisit some old friends, we make new ones in this book, and I’m reminded why I love reading these books. The camaraderie, the humor, the deliberate family by choice, and the author’s refusal to fall into some tired traps (you’ll know what I mean when Kevin lets Carter and Fiona progress) all made for a fabulous read. I can’t wait to revisit this town again. Already. Because it’s just that much fun to be in Medicine Wheel.
And, yeah. Declan? He’s mine. Consider this my “dibs” moment. That is all.
