An idealistic wallflower convinces a wicked rake to help her impress the elite society he despises.
Haylie Dellacourt is determined to escape her wallflower status. Persuading London’s most cynical rake to show an interest in her, will prove to the ton she is worth their attention. What she doesn’t expect is how his bold whispers and sinful touch make her forget everyone else in the room.
Roman Thorne, Marquess of Granville, is as wicked as they come. He warns the persistent Miss Dellacourt an involvement with him will lead to only scandal and ruin. Though he desires to claim her for his own, he is determined to keep her at a distance for her sake as well as his own.
While Haylie gains the social acceptance she thought she wanted, she loses her heart to the dark-eyed rogue who saw her value when no one else could. Can a stubbornly optimistic wallflower convince a disillusioned rake to reserve his wicked ways for her alone and accept the forever kind of love is theirs for the taking?
My love of romance began one summer when I was thirteen and complained of boredom. I ended up with one of my mother's Barbara Cartland books and an obsessive interest that expanded from there. My affinity for writing began with sappy pre-teen poems and led to a Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Creative Writing from the University of Minnesota--Twin Cities.
I love pizza, wine, and dark brooding heroes! With a husband, three kids, and two dogs at home, it can be difficult to find the time (and the motivation!) to write. But somehow the words keep showing up on the page. I am endlessly grateful to the many wonderful readers who enjoy my books and ask for more!
Quick Review - My first Amy Sands book, and it was quite an enjoyable combination of cute, a little funny, a little witty, and romantic. - Reformed rake indeed. A jaded man's gentle side emerges to become a gallant knight in crisp evening wear for a lady in need of saving. - Roman & Hailey were utterly adorable, Hailey more so because of her heartbreaking loneliness and quiet strength.
*An easy read to gain a few chuckles and some sighs.
Sorry, this review belonged to Dangerous. Moving it. 🚛🚛🚛
Desdemona's smile widened. "It's because I'm rather odd, if you hadn't noticed."
He chuckled. "You're oddly perfect."
🥰 Awww…
An unexpected treat! Sweet and sensual. A novella with a plot and pacing that felt more like a novel. The story did switch gears from instalust to instalove rather quickly, but the chemistry between Desdemona and Leander felt genuine and made me smile.
Bonus points: Good boys, Jack and Simon 🐕🐕 A villain you will love to hate.
Shout outs to: ❤️ Emtee for this delightful recommendation. ❤️ Lori:) for partnering in my first ever buddy read. Thanks for putting up with me. I had sooo much fun!
I liked this story very much! The H and h were both likable characters; story held my attention from page one, and the heat level was just enough that made for a satisfying ending. This was the first book I have read by this author and I will be looking for more titles to purchase!
I was impressed by the amount of time the MCs spend together considering the number of pages (about 80) 👏🏻 I liked Haylie as the ugly duckling and how the ravishing Marquess saw past that. It was good considering it's a short story!
A persistent heroine who insists on seeing the good in everyone despite the fact they consistently disappoint her. A jaded hero who's seen enough of society's wickedness he ought to be immune...except for Miss Dellacourt's naive insistence on unearthing the last remaining nugget of goodness in his soul. This is a charming story of two people who really do belong together even if they're only faking it in the beginning.
Heroine: Haylie Dellacourt, age unknown. An awkward wallflower with no friends.
Hero: Roman Thorne, age unknown. Marquess of Granville. A confirmed bachelor and rake.
Date: 1828 (prologue = 1822)
How they meet: They first met off-page when she was a child and he was visiting with her brother on a holiday from school.
What happens: Haylie and Roman are attending the same wedding/house party. His friend is marrying her cousin. Roman is relaxing alone in the study when Haylie slips in to hide, unaware that he is there. Out in the hallway some women are gossiping about Haylie and she gets upset. Roman makes his presence known. He suggests to Haylie that she stand up for herself and advises her that the way to get a man’s attention is to make him jealous. She asks if he will help with the latter since she has a young man in mind, but he isn’t interested and he lets her know he isn’t the type of man with whom she should associate.
Trigger Warnings:
Verdict: Novellas are a tough medium, but this one succeeds in building convincing chemistry between the hero and heroine and having their relationship develop in a believable way. Even though the hero presents himself as shallow, he feels true empathy for her and recognizes her loneliness. I love how the hero works to build up the heroine’s self-esteem and the story has a strong body-positive message with its curvy heroine (who the hero finds very attractive).
Steam-level: moderately steamy and moderately explicit
Enjoyable novella with delightful H and h. It loses nothing by being a short story, in fact it is an ideal length if you have an hour to fill. The epilogue could have been better, I would have liked to see it go further into the future in order to fully disprove the H’s views on marriage and fidelity, but that’s me. This was my introduction to this writer and I would be happy to while away the best part of another hour on her next book.
Very well written but hated how he kept talking about her boobs and hips like 24/7 , well unless she was upset but even then he'd return to the same talk. Not fan of the buffet table outcast but its because it's so commonly used, not the authors fault. 5.6/10 beans
