After genetic engineering went too far, it and other forms of technology deemed harmful to human development were outlawed. The gene spliced animal people were forced into segregation. The corrupt politics of the Human Purists were left unchecked. And eventually the world fell into ruin. Then after the apocalypse, and the proceeding post-apocalypse, had passed, the animal people who had been safely cut off from the rest of the world inside their segregated cities, returned to rebuild society. The new world was built in their image and according to their ways and customs. But still suffering from the remnants of the previous apocalypse, this new world was still far from perfect. Cleo was a young lizard woman living in poverty in the slums. She was born into it and lacked any necessary skills to pull herself out of it. But then her human friend, Bugsy, came along with an offer that was too good to pass up. Some very valuable comic books from the twentieth century had gone missing and they were getting paid to locate them and deliver them to their intended destination. It seemed like an easy job that would finally get Cleo out of the slums and into a better life. But as the job starts going south and she finds herself surrounded by a group of unlikely travel companions, just who can Cleo trust with so much money on the line? Yiffpunk is a sexy suspense thriller set in a post-post-apocalyptic world of genetic engineering, sexual freedom, and talking animals. Brought to you by the twisted imagination of Helen Arlet, author of Miss Nolly's Class, The Dank Wildcats, and the Snow Bunny series. (This Deluxe Edition of Yiffpunk features six extra short stories originally featured on the author's blog leading up to the release of the original book. Now you can have all the extra backstory and erotic details right here in one conveniently collected volume.)

After finishing everything Helen Arlet had in the Snow Bunny series I decided to jump right into something else. It was a had decision between this one and Miss Nolly's Class, but I'm glad I went with this one first because I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this book takes place in the same world as Snow Bunny, just way in the future.

The book is trying really hard to create the furry version of something like Steampunk or Cyberpunk, and frankly, I feel like it did a good job. I could see this book being the standard for a whole Yiffpunk setting the way books like Morlock Night and Infernal Devices were for Steampunk. The book takes the ultra sexual side of furry subculture and bases an entire setting and civilization around it, and it somehow works. Knowing where things started with the Snow Bunny books, I can see how the world would eventually reach the point it is at in this book.

The book being set in a world where humans segregated all the people who had turned themselves into animal hybrids, were left to their own devices, screwed it up, and are now a pretty rare species as the animal people have become the dominant races of the planet. And based their new society on the adult side of furry culture, creating a world where sex is about as common as shaking hands... But it's still presented in a way that feels natural. (And because I got the Deluxe Edition I got a lot more of that kinky casual sex.)

But the story is more than just a bunch of random sex. This is definitely an erotic novel so there's a good amount of it, but it's really a crime drama, maybe not as complex as a Guy Ritchie film, but still kind of reminded me of one a little. It contains a large cast of characters like Cleo, a lizard prostitute who's looking for a better life. Her human friend, Bugsy, a hired thug. Vanessa, the Venus flytrap and scheming small town businesswoman. Zakzu, a bat and rich bitch who thinks she's entitled to whatever she wants. And Gelwa, a shark who also happens to be a psychotic, obsessed Rental Mommy. (And that's only a fraction of the characters.) Then you throw a missing box of very old and very valuable comic books into the mix and watch as the scheming and backstabbing takes off in this weird, overly sexual, post-post-apocalyptic landscape full of equally weird and colorful characters.

It was actually really good and a lot more in-depth than I expected out of a smut novel. This was prime Bizarro fiction and it was amazing. I'm still waiting for more to come from the Snow Bunny series, but this follow up series is off to a fantastic start. And from the looks of the sequel bait at the end, it's just going to get better and weirder in future installments.
