Not bad; a lot of the information is common sense or you’ve read it before elsewhere. I do like that the reference list is quite thorough and mostly from scientific journals. He lists common commercial plans and rates them or says whether they would work/good for you - example: BeachBody = not really (exercises sure, but not the supplements/drinks); SlimWorld and WW = sure (for moral support and ideas, not the prepackaged foods). The interesting part was in the epilogue: 1945 Minnesota Starvation Diet on men for 6-months so they could help the concentration camp survivors. First 3-months was a ~3000-3500 calorie per day diet to create a baseline for all participants, then 6-months of ~1700 calorie per day diet (researchers increased or decreased the daily calories by 100 each week to ensure weight loss wasn’t too fast nor too slow; one participant was increased up to 2100 calories per day and kept losing weight for the entire time). The experiment was never repeated.
This is really useful and well thought out. It is practical and pulls no punches, and this guy literally does not want a penny from you. In market of quick fixes and magical thinking, this book dishes out the truth (as I have experienced it) about weight loss and weight maintenance. Truly invaluable, hope all the crazed dieters out there read this. I also really enjoyed "Conquering Fat Logic" by Nadja Hermann, it pairs well with this book.
Absolutely nothing new at all here. I’ve read a lot of books on this topic, so I thought maybe I was just being harsh, but no. This is all basic stuff I remember learning in middle school health class. Unless you’ve literally never read a single article about diets, even something on buzzfeed, you have heard most of this stuff.
A good primer with nuggets inside that i will be returning to for reference. I like feeling as if this guy ain't bs-ing me. I did scan over parts that don't relate to my present health goals, but like I said, this book is a good reference I will be returning to later.
