Captive of the Shadows

It started out like any other day. How was I to know it was my last day on Earth? You see, on that day, my boss sold me to Doran, the King of Shadows, ally of Chaos, and ruler of one of the three faery courts.

Sounds crazy, right? After all, I’m a geneticist, not a slave.

Before I knew it, I was transported to another world - a world where the very landscape killed most humans. Somehow, against the odds, I survived.

But how?

And why was I here?

I soon found out that the faeries were barren and facing extinction.

The King of Shadows set before me the daunting challenge of finding out why. The consequence for failure? Facing an unbearable fate.

But someone or something was out to stop me....

My search for a solution would lead me to secrets about my own origin and to unexpected feelings for this cruel land and its harsh ruler.

Oh, Chaos! What a wild ride!

🆗 World-building
🆗❌ Characters
❌ Plot all over the place
❌ Dialogues and relationships

And that's another DNF at 22%... Serves me right for reading free Kindles with suspicious and awkward covers. 😖

At first, I liked the fact that the book mixed science with fantasy, and the first 3 chapters are interesting and had me hooked, but after that, it is just weird. Aurora has been sold by her boss to Doran, the king of the shadows because he is in need of her skills as a geneticist, but it is a secret and he'd rather let everyone think that she is here as a sexual plaything.

It just felt a little all over the place. Aurora is not particularly likable, honestly, I found her gullible and naive. Doran clearly tells her that she belongs to him and that he would not be against having sex with her and still, she trusts him and she almost jumps on the occasion to help him. The plot might have been good if the writing was better. Everything from the character development and relationships to the world-building seems half-done, vague, and rushed.

DNF.

THE COVER? GREAT!
THE STORY & PLOT? NOT REALLY.
WAS IT JUST ME OR IT WAS A LITTLE ALL OVER THE PLACE?

HERO appeared like he couldn't make up his mind about the heroine. She's not totally loveable in my estimation but we all know that he's determined to save his dying race. HEROINE is sort of like a geneticist and well she's from a scientific background that can help the faeries to find out what's wrong with their people and why they can't give birth.

OVERALL it may have been good but there wasn't a good or smooth introduction to this new world the author created. Everything from the plot, the setting and character profiling was vague.

Captive of the Shadows is quite an unorthodox kind of Fantasy Romance book. It’s based on actual myths and legends, has bits of detective, romance, erotic, and, unexpectedly – add scientific approach for solving magical and mythical problems. Kaitlyn manages to put all these different element into one beautiful and exciting story. Even this book is first of “The Fairy Code” series, it does have a finished story arc with satisfactory finale. The heroine manages is shown as a complete character with plenty of personal development. She is a smart and strong woman, who is not satisfied with a role of a “Captive”.

Her name is Aurora Black. She is the Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Applied Genetics. She is 27 years old, and this day was like another day in her life. She arrived at work and got to work only to be summoned to her boss’s office. Unusual of him, but he is the boss. But when she entered his office, she knew something was wrong. He told her bluntly that he had sold her to the man in the office with him. Now was when anyone’s flight or fight mode would kick in, but since she was such a diminutive person, she opted for flight. She got away from them, ran to her office, got her stuff, and then bolted for her car. When she made it to the police station, the male officer at the desk seemed like he didn’t believe her. He seemed like he wanted to call the guys with the strait coats. Aurora got out of there fast and reasoned that a hotel would be a good place to stay. A good hotel would have security; she could bolt the door and stay safe. But there, in the dark, the shadows came alive, and when she awoke, she was not in the hotel anymore.

I get my reading material from the Google Store, which advertised this book as a stand-alone. But come to the end of the story, everyone can see this was the beginning of a series. With a bit of research, I find this is one of two books (at least so far). So I was disappointed by that. Perhaps the author or the publisher should fix that. I’m also not sure of the overtones of this story. The heroine is told she is sold and finds herself elsewhere, where she ends up sleeping with and having sex with her captor. Okay. Am I reading a rape fantasy, a sex slave rape fantasy, a story about the effects of Stockholm syndrome? Great sex aside, I would find these events more palatable if it were her planning and not a side effect. Also, where was the warning about mature themes? There are scenes of BDSM with her outfits, collars, and leashes, and not one warning about these themes, not even in genres. It was written well, with the physical world-building being descriptive and leading the reader into the ethereal world-building. And the character interaction, while mostly believable, left me with questions about motivations.

For a series starter, this fantasy had a lot going for it. Shame, the author did not handle the adult mature themes better. Beyond the mishandling, I liked the story. I give this read three stars out of five stars.

I dnf'd this for a few reasons:

1. The author did not really follow the rules she set up in her fictional world, for example: humans cannot survive in their faery realm/world of chaos, it screws their mind and physically they just wither away and die because they simply cannot handle it, but then later at Court a faery was given the death sentence for killing the unborn child of his wife and a human male...but if they go mad and die within a short time of being in thee realm how can they be procreating? Anyway there were a few more examples that just leave me confused and not able to fully enmesh myself in this world.

2. (And this is the MAIN reason because I understand that the first reason, the writing and world-building, is complex and not easy to do) I do not understand why Aurora and Doran hooked up. I mean him I get because he's a faery and a very sexually motivated creature, but Aurora? Maybe my issue is that I'm interjecting myself into her characterization (because what reader doesn't imagine themselves in their characters' shoes) and sex with Doran, especially at the time it happened, doesn't make sense to me and when my fictional couples decides to have sex and why are make-or-break factors for me.

And P.S. there are a few grammatical errors.
P.P.S I may continue skimming the book so I can find out what Aurora is and why she survived the faery realm just for curiosity's sake.

I really liked the fact that this book incorporates a healthy dose of fantasy and science, however it was a bit predictable.

I feel that this book was a bit rushed and some key scenes (and characters) where not developed to their full "potential". A good book should tug at your heartstrings, make you want to cry or laugh or rage along with the characters. I did not get that. I only kept reading because I wanted to know what the heroine is, but my wish was not granted - not completely.

I freely admit that I don't like cliff-hangers, but that has never stopped me from continuing to read other book series before. In this case, however, I'm wondering if it would be worth it.

Initially picked this one up because of the cover artwork [Ivan Khivrenko]. I'm a sucker for a fantastic cover; which aligned with the story by the end of the book.
- After the fourth or fifth sentence, i began wondering why i downloaded this (other than the cover); so, re-read the description [ - ] and ok - gave it another go. By the second chapter I was hooked. Its a bit rough in spots, but the scenes the author builds of suspense, mystery and espionage are nicely interspersed with the growing attraction between the main characters. Intriguing and unexpected ending.
- Looking forward to the next one in the series.

Dark Fairie world - Adventure

This is a dark Farie world adventure and I enjoyed Rory’s character a lot. I am unsure if fairie should survive based on how evil they currently are.

This is a dark story where only power has meaning and love or goodness is worthless.

However, perhaps Rory can change things. I will read the next book to see if Rory can come up with a solution.

Book about slavery!

Slavery!

This book is about enslaving a young woman. I could only read a few pages of it. I found the book to be disgusting. In this day and age , the author is writing about slavery. Amazon, l am very disappointed in your organization for allowing this trash to be published!

Interesting and odd

I enjoyed the read. Fairies, a bit of science, and a lot of mysteries. I'm used to reading paranormal romances. This was different. A definite beauty and the beast scenario. By the end I was definitely wanting more. So many hidden things in play.

Enchanting

A new for me author, this book I found to be well written and executed. It was a new world and story of faery and humanity. A story of the powerful seeking more and the results.

What I find incredibly appalling in this book is the theme of sex and nudity that it incorporates, which makes it very hard to enjoy the book, Although it had a good start, had Kaitlyn Weiss not incorporated the themes of sex, this book might as weel have gotten a 5/5 star!

Intriguing

Aurora is a scientist. Orphaned as a baby, she grew up in an orphanage.
She is stolen by fairies and becomes a pet of the Shadow king. He wants her to find out why the fairies are infertile.

The cover of the book is fantastic, let's get that out of the way first of all. I will echo of few other people's sentiments. The heroine really all over the place, but who can blame her. She gets kidnapped, then finds out something about herself that no one can explain. The King of Shadows, I'd never call him the hero, is a steady character. He has his motives for what he does. It is laid out and defined. The enemies are a true blind-side, I never saw it coming. All-in-all, I truly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend.

I downloaded Captive of the Shadows, book 1 of the Fairy Code series, as a free ebook from Amazon. This was a difficult rating to settle on. While I liked the overall idea of the story, the plot came up short on pulling me in with tension and detail. I loved the incorporation of science to an urban fantasy novel, as it added a fresh twist to the genre. The series has a lot of possibility, but this novel came up short for me, as I would have been more vested if the world-building had been more defined to give readers a better sense of the fae world.
