En pocas palabras ¡una historia con una protagonista inolvidable!
Hallé esta novela de casualidad y me asombra que no esté lo suficientemente divulgada y difundida, y que no se conozca a gran escala a su autora.
Al principio es un poco monótona y lenta, sin embargo toma forma y un buen ritmo.
La puntuación de 5 estrellas la he puesto por ese final... ¡Que final! Quien no termine con los ojos abnegados en lágrimas... pues... no tiene alma!
“El último verano” supone un duro relato sobre todas las atrocidades cometidas en la segunda guerra mundial. A través del diario de Charlotte vemos como de tenerlo todo pasa a no tener nada. De ser una niña rica e inocente a ser una mujer rota y dañada.
Es difícil digerir algunos fragmentos de la novela, cuando la autora narra detalles escabrosos: violaciones, asesinatos que aunque sabemos que sucedieron y son un fiel reflejo de lo que pasó aún siguen sorprendiendo por su crudeza.
Esta es una novela sobre cómo se vivió la II Guerra Mundial, en la ahora desaparecida Prusia, sobre las barbaridades cometidas por los nazis pero también por los rusos, y por los propios polacos contra los suyos; es una novela que trata sobre un libro, “El último verano”, que sabemos que encierra un importante misterio, pero que vamos a tardar mucho, muchas páginas, en poder descubrir…
Narrada en dos tiempos, una mediante un diario que nos traslada a 1936 y posteriores años de la guerra y nos describe cómo avanza la vida de Charlotte, sus amores, su juventud y sus pesares. Y la segunda, nos muestra el presente de la protagonista, Charlotte von Datski y el viaje que decide emprender junto a su nieta, Laura.
Es una novela que engancha, que estremece y emociona a cada página que lees. Una novela increíble de un momento histórico en la vida de la humanidad, contada por el lado que la perpetró: sus sentimientos, pesares y humillaciones... y como un pueblo quedó tatuado por un estigma el resto de su existencia por la simple ceguera de un hombre.

Τι να παραθέσει κανείς γι'αυτό το εκπληκτικό μυθιστόρημα που συντάραξε το ειναι μου.Μίλησε βαθια στην ψυχή μου με την αντιπολεμική του κραυγή,την διεισδυτική ψυχογράφηση των ηρωων του&την πλοκή αμείωτης έντασης που συναρπάζει από την πρώτη ως την τελευταία σελίδα του.Ένα βιβλίο με ιστορικές αναφορες στον Β παγκοσμιο πολεμο με κυριο σημειο αναφορας τη διαμαχη Γερμανιας -Ρωσιας,στην Πολωνια.
Σαρλοττε. Μια γυναικα-συμβολο για τον ανθρωπισμο της. Una historia basada en hechos reales, la autora escribió sobre los diarios de su madre y su abuela, durante la segunda guerra mundial. Una historia dura en tiempos de guerra, pero tan bien contada, que aún siendo tan dura es "preciosa" . Una protagonista fuerte y luchadora, con un solo amor hasta su muerte

This is the first book I've read by this Author and if her other books are as good then I'm in for a treat reading the back catalogue and read them I will.
I can thoroughly recommend this book and as others have said, it's a change reading a book from a mostly German/East Prussian POV based on WWII, it shows us how not all Germans were as supportive of Hitler and his views as he might have liked us to believe. Part based on factual events and real people this book weaves a great fictional story surrounding the events and people.
The story is very well written and is definitely a page turner. Told in modern times with the past being told from a series of diary entries this story tells the history of Charlotte von Datski as she re-reads her diary. Charlotte is a formidable matriarch of her family and returns to the country of her birth with her granddaughter Laura, in an attempt to revisit where she grew up and come to terms with what happened to her.
As we read the book we are enlightened to facts that have caused her to have a slightly unusual relationship with some of her family members.
This will be in my top 10 books of this year.

I don't understand why this book isn't more known. I wish I could give it ten stars. When it comes to historical and romance WWII novels, I prefer reading from the Russian side. (The Bronze Horseman influence, I'm guessing?) This is the second I have read from a German stance. (The first being 'Skeletons At The Feast') I cried many times throughout the extracts of Charlotte's diary. There is so much sadness but also love and happiness, although it is short-lived. It's stories like these that make you relise what true suffering is, and how lucky you are to be born in this day and age. It also reinforces my feelings of hatred and disgust towards Adolf Hitler. How could such a man be allowed to run a country? What a mess he made and what a reputation he has burdened Germany with.
A quote from the book that I really liked was "Eternal peace only lasts until the next war."
I hadn't heard of Catrin Collier prior to reading this. I hope her other books are just as good becasue I enjoyed this so much.

Encontré esta novela entre ese montón de libros pendientes al que recurro de vez en cuando y que tantas sorpresas me da.
Todo comienza el la antigua Prusia Oriental en 1939 donde Charlotte y su familia son orgullosos militantes del partido nazi, al igual que mucho de sus conciudadanos.
Narrado en dos tiempos, la propia Charlotte nos va leyendo en el presente fragmentos de un diario secreto que escribió de manera irregular desde aquella época. Su ilusión ante el anuncio de su compromiso y posterior boda, su desengaño ante la vida marital, el estallido de la guerra y el descubrimiento de muchas de las atrocidades que los alemanes, y más tarde los rusos, llevaron a cabo contra los civiles.
Charlotte abandono su país, primero recaló en Inglaterra y más tarde en Estados Unidos. En el presente, siendo una anciana, cree que es el momento de regresar a su país natal y lo hace en compañía de su nieta Laura, que irá descubriendo los secretos que su abuela le ha ocultado siempre.
Con un inicio que no logró engancharme del todo, la novela va ganando en emociones y en algunos momentos pone la piel de gallina y encoge el corazón.
Todos los personajes, tanto principales como secundarios me han parecido estupendos y la novela en sí ha sido un descubrimiento, un libro de esos que te deja pensando durante días sobre los privilegios y desgracias que la vida puede ponernos en el camino de manera totalmente aleatoria.

This was the first and only book I read again as soon as I finished. I literally read the last page and went back to the first chapter.
Although it is difficult at times to not get confused about the family tree and the relatives involved, the way the story unfolds, the way the lives of the characters intertwine is absolutely delightful.
The ending is sad, which can't surprise anyone, nor is it a spoiler because after all, we all know that the time when the story takes place was tragic, but suffice it to say that you feel a certain feeling of closure at the end.
100% recommended, I'd give it 6 stars if I could. It's one of my favorite books and it's still in my top 5 so many years after picking it up by chance in a bookstore and devouring it in a day.

Πραγματικά δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω γιατί αυτό το βιβλίο δεν είναι πιο γνωστό!!! Δεν θα πω πολλά, είναι απλά υπέροχο σου προκαλεί πολυ έντονα συναισθήματα και πολύ καλογραμμένο όσον αφορά περιγραφές. Έχει προσπεράσει οποιοδήποτε άλλο βιβλίο του έχω βάλει 5 αστέρια και είναι μόνο του στην πρώτη θέση.

I binge read this in twelve hours and it is a must read. I don't really know how to go about reviewing it.
It had left me feeling happy for the relationships after sixty year, sad at the sense of loss and the cruelty of humanity, heartbroken for all that many endured, satisfied that the main character found some form of closure after a lifetime of heartbreak, de-moralised by the actions of others towards fellow human beings.
A truly remarkable book that should be a must read for everyone.
It had left me feeling happy for the relationships after sixty year, sad at the sense of loss and the cruelty of humanity, heartbroken for all that many endured, satisfied that the main character found some form of closure after a lifetime of heartbreak, de-moralised by the actions of others towards fellow human beings.
A truly remarkable book that should be a must read for everyone.

Terminada la relectura de este maravilloso libro. Sigue manteniendo las 5 estrellas y, por supuesto, su lugar entre mis libros favoritos de la vida.
Es un viaje precioso que te muestra a la mujer fuerte e independiente que es la Charlotte actual al mismo tiempo que a la niña inocente que era cuando empezó a escribir su diario antes de que la guerra le arrebatara todo.
Lectura sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial (basada en un historial real) 100% recomendada ❤️

Wow! What a departure from Ms Collier's other books- one her publisher 'found in a drawer'. Please keep looking!
This is more of a serious novel compared to her Welsh series. Charlotte von Danski is a young German woman during World War II and we follow her both in current time and going back through her diary. This book is interesting because of the German perspective on the war and the current/1940's storyline. You'll be kept up reading this one!

Ένα συγκλονιστικό βιβλίο από απόψη περιγραφών ιδιαίτερα για τη φρίκη του πολέμου και ένα εξαιρετικό βιβλίο ως προς την τεχνική γραψίματος, παράθεσης και παρουσίασης τον γεγονότων ημερολογιακά. Στο είδος του δεν έχω διαβάσει άλλο αλλά είναι τρομερό!

Hacen falta más libros como éste. Ambientado en su mayor parte en los años de la II Guerra Mundial, en este libro he encontrado un relato de la guerra desde el punto de vista de una familia alemana de la aristocracia, cosa poco frecuente. Si además añadimos a esto que la historia está basada en hechos reales, que la autora se basó en los diarios personales de su madre y de su abuela, tenemos un libro histórico consistente y convincente, que alterna personajes reales y ficticios, hechos reales y de ficción.
Es una historia contada desde la época actual, narrando el pasado a partir de una serie de entradas de diario, el diario perteneciente a Charlotte von Datski. Charlotte es una formidable matriarca de su familia y regresa a su país de nacimiento (antigua Prusia Oriental) con su nieta Laura, en un intento de volver a visitar el lugar donde creció y aceptar lo que sucedió. A medida que leemos el libro, vamos conociendo los hechos que han causado que ella tenga una relación un poco inusual con algunos de los miembros de su familia.
No podemos negar que es una historia triste tratándose de la guerra, pero también se cuenta una hermosa historia de amor que sobrepasa al tiempo, con un final con un toque de sorpresa muy emotivo.
Una cita del libro que me gustó mucho fue «La paz eterna sólo dura hasta la siguiente guerra» .
Es una novela subversiva, conmovedora y genial. Simplemente me encantó!!!! Mi valoración es de 5 estrellas, un 10 de 10.

Book 28/100: One Last Summer by Catrin Collier. I don't know how the universe worked in my favour to pick this up at this time, but it did and I am shooketh by it! A book that dives into the mind of a an old woman looking back in her past and her part in World War II's Nazi regime and the invasion on Poland alongside the Russians... We read her diary as she dives into it reliving moments to share with her grandchildren so they know the truth and just a mind-blowing read to have at this specific moment in real time history in the making. My heart is with Ukraine more than ever after reading this book that was a part of my "too disturbing to finish" list I found online and its timing was something to marvel at. As the story within the diary progressed, I can see how this book made the list now; it's quite something to be in the shoes of the German women post WWII as they found out the horrors that was truly happening during the war.

fantástica novela, me ha encantado! la recomiendo! Es otra visión de la 2ª guerra mundial, siempre había leído novelas y visto películas desde la visión del holocausto y esta novela muestra otra diferente, para nada es justificable los 6 millones de judíos asesinados, pero ni los buenos son tan buenos ni los malos son tan malos...

An absolutely wonderful book, so well written with fiction characters woven into true events, Catrin is the master of this. I couldn't put this book down fantastic characters as always from Catrin. I highly recommend this book and can't give it enough praise.I have learnt so much about historical events from reading Catrin's books and this is one of my favourites 🥰

Dicen que las grandes personas están hechas de acero “inolvidable”. Charlotte, la protagonista de “El último verano”, es una de esas personas.
La novela comienza en Prusia Oriental en 1939. En la mansión Von Datski se celebra la mayoría de edad de Charlotte y su compromiso con un noble de la zona.
Transcurridos muchos años, Charlotte decide volver a la tierra que la vio nacer. Durante el largo viaje desde Estados Unidos relee el diario que comenzó a escribir tras aquella fiesta y se enfrenta a los demonios que le han perseguido durante más de cincuenta años.
El viaje a la antigua ciudad de Könisberg sirve a la autora para mostrarnos otra perspectiva de la Segunda Guerra Mundial: la de una familia alemana. Descubrimos su miedo, su dolor, la hambruna a la que se enfrentaron y las consecuencias de las traiciones a Hitler.
El fin de la guerra no trajo la paz a Prusia sino más dolor con la entrada del Ejército Rojo y sus violaciones en masa a ancianas, mujeres embarazadas y niñas. Hombres y niños fueron masacrados sin contemplación alguna, y ese sólo fue el principio de las consecuencias de una guerra que costó millones de vidas en uno y otro bando.
“El último verano” también es una historia de amor. La de dos almas gemelas que ponen en riesgo sus vidas, pese a saber que es un romance con las horas contadas. Sin embargo, se empeñaron en soñar lo contrario y eso les dará fuerzas para sobrevivir a las terribles consecuencias del final de la guerra.
Esta gran obra está narrada de una forma muy especial: combinando las entradas del diario de Charlotte con lo que va viviendo en su viaje junto a su nieta Laura. De esta manera la autora consigue que entendamos perfectamente la compleja personalidad de Charlotte y también que veamos cómo ha cambiado Europa desde 1945.
La autora se ha basado en los diarios de su madre y abuela, que vivieron en primera persona ese periodo, y ha creado un personaje inolvidable: una mujer que sobrevivió a la guerra, al dolor más inhumano al que una persona se puede enfrentar y consiguió salir adelante pagando un precio muy alto por el mero hecho de sobrevivir.
Un libro que os recomiendo leer por la maestría con la que está narrado, por su contenido histórico y porque demuestra que el amor es lo único que nos aferra a la vida.
Una novela que terminé con los ojos anegados de lágrimas, pero del que guardaré siempre un gran recuerdo. Hay historias y protagonistas que te marcan de por vida y la vida de Charlotte ha sido una de ellas.

This book is absolutely soul crushing. Yes, it is a love story, but it is also about so much more. I loved it but I am utterly devasteted by it.
I have read so many books about the same era from different points of views, but never from the viewpoint of a German aristocrat woman. It is one thing to know about the atrocities of WWII, but quite another to actually look at it from the other side - from which we truly never seen it quite like this. Yes, the story itself is fiction, but the fact remains: not every German knew just what went on in their own backyard, they believed what they've read in the papers, heard on the radio, what the propaganda wanted them to believe. By the time the truth came out, it was so awful, so uncomprehedingly disturbing that it was hard to believe. People on both sides of the war really became something else. The atrocities cause on either side are horrific and extremely hard to read. But it is so necessary. Necessary so that we never forget. To never allow it to happen again. Yes, I know that's wishful thinking, but this book - and all the others in the genre -, is a cry out for hope.
The book is written in the present, where Charlotte is an 80yr old woman trying to revisit the home she has left behind after the war. We see her life pan out through her diary entries, which she has started to write on her 18th birthday. We see a young woman crazy in love, looking forward to a fairytale wedding. Then the war brakes out and from then on it's one crazy race for survival. The love story would be heartwarming if not set in such devastating conditions. But it just serves to know that love can bloosom anywhere and can overcome anything.

Po przeczytaniu trylogii "Jeździec miedziany", szukałam książki o zbliżonej tematyce tj. II wojny światowej i losów ludzi, którym przyszło żyć w tamtych czasach. Recenzje na LC naprowadziły mnie na "Ostatnie lato" C. Collier.
Główną bohaterką jest Charlotte von Datski, typowa przedstawicielka szlachty pruskiej tamtego okresu. Poznajemy ją w wieku 18 lat, gdy w sierpniu 1939 roku wraz z innymi członkami orkiestry wraca do Prus Wschodnich, po zakończonym tournée po Rosji.
Książka napisana jest w sposób szczególny, gdyż obecne życie Charlotte przeplatane jest wraz z historią zapisaną w jej pamiętniku. Dzięki temu zabiegowi czytelnik czyta "Ostatnie lato" z większym zainteresowaniem; przeżywa wszystko to, co doświadczyła główna bohaterka, od czasów dzieciństwa, poprzez lata wojny, a kończąc na osiemdziesięcio-kilkuletniej staruszce, która przed śmiercią wybiera się do rodzinnego kraju.
"Ostatnie lato" to historia piękna i poruszająca. Nie zabraknie w niej przyjaźni, ofiarności, wierności ideałom czy bezinteresowności. Nie zabraknie również nienawiści, chciwości, chwil okrutnych i przerażających. Ale najważniejsze - nie zabraknie miłości. Miłości, która dla Charlotte i Saszy była uczuciem jedynym, wielkim i niepowtarzalnym.

Siempre digo que faltan libros sobre el lado Alemán. No el judio-aleman, sino el Ario, aquellos que seducidos por el nacionalismo o sordos y mudos ante el horror como presenciaron con tal de conservar su estilo de vida prefirieron no hacer preguntas. Este es uno de esos libros.
Charlote es una anciana que al saber que pronto morira decide volver a la casa de la cual salió huyendo en 1945, llevándonos con ella a un viaje por sus recuerdos, su adolescencia en las juventudes Hitlerianas, su primer amor, su gran decepcion, su vida como parte de la más altas de las familia prusoalemanas, y como se desentendia de la política hasta que finalmente la alcanzó y se llevo lo que amaba.
Al principio puede parecer la historia típica de la burguesa que la vida la hacer crecer de una niña mimada a una señora que debe hacerse cargo de las mansión y las tierras, y lo sería si no fuese porque ocurre durante toda la segunda Guerra y su familia se ve involucrada en los sucesos más importantes. Y si todo es muy tranquilo hasta que en la cuarta parte ¡PUM! La crueldad y salvajismo se hace presente.
Va a mis favoritos por ser increíble.
