When he saves a mother and her son from freezing to death, this one act has the power to redeem him, for the pair will offer him the fulfillment of an impossible dream—unconditional love and an exit from the world of the Shadows. To his sorrow, leaving his former life won’t be so easy, for the evil Bethanie fled has found them, and they have Ethan.
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
Awsome book. This book continues a couple of threads from Kings of Guardian book 12. After the brothers dismantling their fathers organisation the twins discovered they had a half brothers. Like always the (Kings and Queen of Guardian) do not leave family behind.
Bethanie Clark has been the victim of abuse the whole of her adult life. She has endured unspeakable horrors, now she is told to run as the monster who "owned" her had bigger monsters to answer to.
Lycos has been killing monsters for so long he has become one, now even his last convinces been cut, the last thing he wants is people around. Something time what you don't want is what you need.
Another great book in the series to be enjoyed as a stand alone, but makes the whole series richer for the back story and adding things to move forward. There are a couple of guest appearances but not many people from the main Guardian stories. As always great character development. Some important touches about the ongoing wars of the two organisations. A must have for any fan of the series as well as always a good point to start the series and backtrack from.
Very good, action packed and thrilling story, following a woman and her son fleeing from her partner’s enemy’s. Lycos is a Guardian operative who comes to her aid.
Lycos is the much anticipated third book in the Shadow Guardian series by Kris and is an absolute must read story. Kris is also a must read author and this series and the Guardian World Series I would also highly recommend as these are some of my most favourite stories as well as characters and the hardships they have been through💕 Kris knows how to write a great action packed story and fills it with enough angst to keep you on the edge and on occasion secrets which keep you guessing until the end🤩
Bethanie and Ethan are on the run after getting instructions to leave New York and to make themselves comfortable in a safe house, that not many people know about. Unbeknownst to Lycos, his safe house has been accessed and he watches over the woman and child until one day he returns from working in the mountains to discover they are lost in the mountains and a snow storm is coming😢
A fantastic story and I look forward to more in this series and the Guardian series❣️
Warning - this is a standalone. If you are looking for interactions/guest appearances from the main Guardians (the Kings/Alpha team), this is not that book. There are a couple of mentions, but that is it. Everything else in this book it strictly Shadow.
I loved this isolated tale (it deals with some of the fallout from Dixon's book). Lycos is so like the Grinch - living on his mountain with his Dog, hidden far away from civilization, not needing anyone or anything. He wasn't even all that upset when Moriah ended their arrangement (several books back). A loner with a vast array or knowledge, who is content to be alone after the his horrible upbringing and the evil that he helps to eliminate from the world (I totally love his specialty). Bethanie has had a horrible life and the only bright light is her son Ethan (half brother to Guardians' Wonder Twins as revealed in Dixon). An unexpected person sends these characters on a collision course.
The majority of the book is the development of the relationships between Lycos, Bethany, Ethan, and Dog, as Lycos hides them from the evil hunting them. Don't get me wrong, the first 3/4 of the book is absorbing and watching Lycos being dragged out of his shell makes for a consuming read. At 73% the action starts and reinforcements are called in (I am not going to lie but I was hoping that the reinforcement's book would have been done by now - got a small crush on that one). The epic list of Lycos' actions was truly awesome. A fantastic conclusion and a great setup for the next Shadow book, whoever it may be.
I've been a Kris Michaels fan ever since I read Jacob in February of 2016 and eagerly await each new release. I cannot recommend her enough. So grab her books and get ready for fall into her worlds!
In this story we meet 11 year old Ethan(Drake and Dixon’s half brother) and his mother Bethanie. They are on the run from Stratus and end up at a safe house owned by Lycos(Ryan). Ryan rescues them after they get caught in a blizzard while out exploring. After Ryan rescues them, he ends up being a real asshole to them. I truly didn’t think he would be able to redeem himself but of course he does. There we get endearing Ethan and Ryan bonding moments and steamy romance for Ryan and Bethanie. The action comes in later in the book when Ryan takes on an army to keep his family safe. Stratus is kind of confusing to me. Maybe it’s because no names are mentioned, sometimes it’s a little hard to follow along. I think I need to go back a couple of books and refresh my memory. I can’t wait for the next book!
Lycos has spent years in isolation, telling himself he doesn't deserve more or better, that he is happy in his loneliness. He is convinced he is broken and his 'sins' mean this is his life going forward, his history and abuse may have shaped the man he is and will definitely break your heart, but he doesn't see that the man he is has a good heart and has everything to give....to the right people...once he gets over the shock of people in his space. Dog adapts so much more quickly than him, he instantly knows Bethanie and Ethan are theirs to defend and protect and shows Lycos just how easy it is. Bethanie is so much stronger than she thinks, she has lived through hell and survived, she has brought up the most amazing son, who has thrived despite the conditions they have lived in. Seeing the two of them grow in confidence and self worth under the care of Lycos is heartwarming. The relationship that Lycos and Ethan form is awesome, he challenges Ethan and teaches him so much, and in return Ethan shows Lycos just how much he has to give and how to love a family unconditionally. A very emotional read that grips you from the start and keeps you engrossed until the final page, which will leave you a little sad that you have reached the end, the bonus is that you can already see what an asset Ethan will be for Guardian in the future, his intelligence and hunger for knowledge leaves no doubt he is a Guardian asset in the making. Yay! I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Another Shadow sees the light when a woman and her son end up in the forest. Lycos, a Shadow, lives off the grid in a mountain fortress built by himself. When Bethanie and her son are lost he saves them. He then receives a request to shelter them, from one of the few people in the world who could make such a request.
The Shadow world and Stratus are about to intersect violently since the woman is a Stratus target. Lycos, aka Ryan, will not let anything happen to either of them. He has found a capacity for love and he will do anything necessary to save his family. We are also treated to a visit from another Shadow, whom I hope will also be receiving a happy ending of his own. The only thing missing from this story (and it's personal for me) is a visit to the ranch and a family dinner. Lycos and Bengal refer to "family functions" in the future and I hope we can be part of them.
I reiterate what I said in a previous review. I am really enjoying all of the 'Guardian' books... but I really wish that there was a proper reading order... cos... you know... spoilers... it does take some of the anticipation out of the reading when you kind of know what has/will happened/happen. Sighs. But, I am enjoying them!
Woke up at two saw Lycos had been downloaded and started reading. The twists and turns kept me reading until five. Didn’t finish but had to get some sleep! I highly recommend this book or any book written by Kris! Best writer ever!!!!!!!
Grumpy Ryan ‘Lycos’ Wolf’s practically a hermit, especially since his sometimes bed-buddy is gone for good. Bethanie Clark, single mom to brilliant preteen, Ethan, didn’t waste time after she was visited by Jewell King and Joy Nyugen who share a lot about Ethan’s dad, Harvey Simmons and direct her to a safe house. Though Harvey’s supposedly dead (a reason for Bethanie to dance), his crooked associates are searching for Ethan. To kill him! This installment picks up right after the events of book one with the after-effects of the unexpected magic which has drawn the eye of the High Mage to Elly.
I'm possibly in the minority but I didn't enjoy this one as much as the origin story. I felt it spent too much time with her mother fretting over magic, Elly being the distressed damsel and setting up for the battle. The scenes between Rain and Elly were as magical as the first book, the dark forces were well explained and plentiful - also just as ominous as in book one. While interesting in some aspects and (I'm certain) important to the overall arc I didn't feel as if much progress was made - until the last third of the book. The introductions of new characters and their import to the story thus far fit perfectly and made their appearance bittersweet.
The writing style is beautiful and the characters rich but I felt the plot was a little slippery. It was clear but seeing it in varying degrees of import and danger from the secondary characters made it a tad redundant. This reader could have done with a few less people chiming in, though I enjoyed the climatic action set piece. All of that being said, this is still quite the fantasy adventure tale and must be read in order to fully appreciate and follow with clarity. On his lonely mountain, Ryan’s puzzled and angry when Joy’s code is used at his safe house. If that’s not bad enough, his new assignment is to keep Bethanie and Ethan safe. With limited life experience and just as much making decisions for herself and her son, it’s a reboot on life for Bethany While exploring the woods near their temporary home, bad weather rolls in and Ryan notices his charges are still out. Meanwhile, Stratus dedicates assets to locate Ethan. Immediately.
:NOTE:While this outing reads fine as is, series fans may have a better flow reading it closer to Dixon Rating: 4stars
So I read my first Kris Michaels book today after seeing it recommended on a Facebook book group.
SPOILERS
So, as anyone who reads my reviews would know - I can’t stand OWD in my books. The prologue was focused on the hero and a woman he was in a quasi - relationship with (who then marries another hero in the Guardian book world - another trope that I hate!). I almost DNF-ed at this point but since this author was recommended by someone that I knew had similar preferences and sensitivities as I do, I powered through. Thankfully - there are no sex scenes with the OW; and the hero is also clear that he doesn’t love her and they’re together for comfort rather than anything else. However, he did build a house with her in mind and later in the book, you'll read that he also bought her favorite port wine to keep at home. Sigh. Almost DNF-ed again but gritted my teeth and continued. They break up in the prologue and we then move on to the actual story of the hero and the woman he’s meant to be with.
The story itself was sweet and well written - I liked the heroine, she was sweet and shy but strong. He was an ass at first but as the romance progressed, the hero totally adores her and that makes up for how he treated her when they first met and the prologue (Thank God!) The author also makes it very clear that his feelings for her are different than anything he experienced before. Phew! There’s nothing I hate more than heroes thinking of exes!
However, I did find Joy/Moriah - his former lover who broke up with him in the prologue and ended up marrying Dixon - irritating during their phone dialogue. I absolutely can’t stand the whole ‘I sent them to you, you always wanted a wife and kid, open your heart’ dialogue by ex-lovers that authors love to include.
And I also dislike books that include the former lover now friend trope because the reader never knows - was he more open to being with someone (Plan B) because his former lover broke up with him and was now married? The book would have been perfect without mention of Joy / Moriah.
I absolutely loved this book and will definitely read it again.
Bethany & Ryan (Lycos) make such a good couple. She and her son landed at his cabin in the mountains without his knowledge. Then he finds out Guardian is tasking him to keep them safe from possible threat. Then a winter storm kept them locked in his mountain cabin for months. I really got to see their relationship develop. I especially liked her kid Ethan and how Ryan bonded with him. The wolf/dog was a cool addition also. They make a great family and I enjoyed seeing how they make it work for the. More action ensues when the bad guys find them and Ryan needs to draw on his assassin skills to protect them. Lots of exciting action towards the end that showcased his killing skills. I really enjoyed his creativity in it.
I’ve been following the authors reading list from her website and have been toggling beaten the Kings of Guardians series and this Shadow World Series. Between this and the novellas, I’ve read 17 books in a row from this author. I’m usually tiered of books this far into the series and if nothing else, the overarching theme/conflict. But this author does a great job making the MC’s the main focal point and keeping the overarching theme fresh and exciting without too much drama and darkness/gloom.
I highly recommend this and the Kings of Guardian series. It keeps getting bette and better.
Lycos is the third instalment in the Guardian Security: Shadow World series by Kris Michaels. I couldn't wait to dive into this series - binging my way through this thrilling blend of high-stakes suspense, military precision, and emotional romance. This series is a spin-off from her Kings of Guardian universe, and dives into the covert, dangerous, and morally complex missions of elite operatives working in the shadows where the stakes are high, loyalty is tested, danger is constant, and love often comes at the highest cost. Each book focuses on a different operative, giving us a fresh perspective each time, while also weaving in an overarching sense of camaraderie and found family. The characters are layered - hardened by their pasts and yet still vulnerable in ways that make them relatable. I recommend reading the series from the beginning, reading each book in sequential order for you to be able to fully appreciate the interconnected relationships and evolving team dynamics. Ms. Michaels doesn’t shy away from the darker realities of covert work, but she also infuses hope, resilience, and the healing power of love into her storylines. So, if you enjoy romantic suspense with military and intelligence intrigue, then you will want to dive into this world and experience all the action, passion, and edge of your seat missions for yourself. Happy Reading…
Lycos is the 3rd book in Kris Michaels’ Guardian Security Shadow World Series. And, Oh boy does he deliver!!
Ryan has always operated better on his own in life and while working in the shadows as Lycos for the elite Guardian Security. So when he’s tasked with watching over Bethanie and her eleven year old son, life as he knows it will change forever.
Bethanie has one mission in life to protect her son at all cost. When she’s suddenly on the run from an unknown enemy, they cross paths with Ryan and things are finally start to look up.
First off the story line of this book intrigued me so much, I was highly anticipating Lycos’ arrival. I loved all the chemistry. I loved how Ryan and Bethanie both come from really difficult backgrounds and still try to put their best foot forward. Most importantly I loved all the action, I could not put this book down, every chapter had something exciting happening.
Lycos was a perfect read. Action packed with some sexy bits. A Total 5 Star Story!!! Can’t wait for more Guardian Security Shadow World. Kris Michaels, you Rocked this book!!
Lycos takes us back to the world of Guardian Security, one that I am highly addicted to. Lycos has lived his life full of darkness and hiding in the shadows for Guardian. Accidents are his calling and one that is his ever so good at. After saving Bethanie and her son and keeping them safe under Guardians request, he learns that this woman has lived her life in the shadows but ones different to his. Two people that have lived a lonely existence surrounded by others will soon see that stepping out of the shadows will bring light to your heart that you never expected it to see. As Bethanie and her son Ethan teach Lycos what love is, this man may finally see that stepping out of the only world he ever knew will be worth everything including his own life. Their story is highly emotional, angsty and packed full of heart pounding passion. A story of unconditional love and compassion that will leave you on a high as big as the mountain that Lycos resides on. Lycos is a book that will wrap itself around your heart and have you feeling secure and warm in the knowledge that darkness may exist but the light that surrounds love will always win.
If I could I would give this book a 10!!!!! It was a fabulous story! Every second of it was exciting, riveting, suspenseful, action packed and just downright excellent!!!! I highly enjoyed it!!! It catches your interest and never lets go from beginning to end. Bethannie and Ethan were so likeable and had been through so much. Ryan was just who they needed and he was the perfect person to look after them. The relationships that developed between all of them were beautiful and heartwarming to read about. Dog was such a big part of the story and him and Ethan were so wonderful together!!! Kris Michaels ' descriptions in this book were excellent... Ryan, Bethannie, Ethan and Dog were brought to life vividly and felt like people whom I would love to meet!!! I highly recommend this book.... It had heat, sweetness, love and deep loyalty. I was glad that the Guards were involved.... This whole series has been phenomenal to read and I am so glad, many books ago, that I gave the first book in the series a chance .... You will be glad too, if you do!!! 😁
Lycos is the third book in the Guardian Security Shadow World series.
Ryan Wolf and Bethanie Clark were a great couple. Things started out a little shaky between them and Ryan was definitely a jerk. However the more time they spent together, the more he opened up and the more he realized how lonely his life has been. Bethanie was a brave and strong women. Her dead husband was terrible, but she never gave up and kept her focus on taking care of her son Ethan.
Ethan was a bright young man. He loved his mom fiercely and was super protective of her. I loved how quickly he connected to Ryan and how much he adored Dog. I wish we could have seen Ethan interact with Drake and Dixon. If you have read their books in the Guardian Security series, you know they discovered they had a young step brother. Turns out that step brother is Ethan.
These Stratus people and Fates are getting more annoying as the series continues. I don’t understand why Guardian hasn’t been able to locate them, and I’m ready for them to be taken care of permanently. Thanatos’ book is next, and I’m excited to meet the lady who makes his heart beat.
The lone Wolf lives in isolation in the mountain range and discovers he is not alone. He is asked to protect Bethanie and her son Ethan . He ends up saving their lives when they get lost in a storm. Lycos (Ryan Wolf) takes them to his place where secrets become untold and bonding takes place. It is not always easy for either Bethanie or Lycos but once the barriers come down. They find themselves very attracted to one another. I love the denial they have at first and it is such a beautiful moment when they accept the reality of what exists between them. Kris Michaels does a wonderful job creating this isolated world in which these two souls find each other. The other thing that I enjoyed so much was the relationship between Dog and Ethan. It was obvious from the start that Dog knew these were his people to protect. It just took Lycos a little longer to figure it out. Beautifully done Kris Michaels! I look forward to more in this series.
Kris Michael’s stories continue to inspire, intrigue, are full of stories, adventure, gire, love, and revenge and more. The Shadows are a special breed of men, with special skills, horrific or troubled pasts. But they have so much to offer the world or a family out of the shadows. Bethanie has a horrid life, unimaginable sorrow, abuse and horror.the one good thing in life is her son Ethan. But now they are on the run for their lives.guardian has set them up in a safe house near Lyco’s mountain home. They are lost in a snow storm and almost die. Lycos saves them but does not want anything to do with them. He is alone wolf. But, they grow on him after he is assigned as their mission from Guardian. There is a kidnap gone wrong if Ethan. Stratus is involved. There are 10 teams if three trying to take out Ethan and Bethanie. Lycos goes loan wolf to annihilate those who dare try and harm what is his.there is also a connection to Double D. I like that all these books are intertwined. So much more to thus story.
Lycos falls hard and fast and he didn't even realize that it happened or that he could have that.
Lycos is a loner and wants no one around him. Bethanie and Ethan are put in his safe house that only a few Shadows know about. When they go exploring and get lost in the freezing cold and snow, he goes looking for them. He ends up taking them to his cave because it is closer and he needs to get her warm quickly. Now they are in forced proximity because there is a winter storm coming and they won't be able to go anywhere. When he finds out Ethan is family to Guardian, he resigns himself to protecting them both. With them being around each other constantly, he realizes that his first impression was somewhat wrong. He is starting to think about having a family but how can he have a family with the job he does? Can he keep them safe them safe from whoever is after them even if they don't know why? When Ethan disappears, will he be able to find him before he is hurt?
I borrowed Lycos ~ Guardian Security Shadow World ~ Book 3, by Kris Michaels from the Kindle Unlimited Program.
Lycos has a special way of helping evil people to their death and it is by accident. He also has a safe house in the Smokey Mountains that his fellow shadows know about and he really lives in a large cave that has heated floors from a hot spring, solar power and hidden entries. It slow has a modern kitchen, a large fire place and a retractable antena for contacting the outside world.
He lives alone with a part wolf named 'Dog' until Ethan and his mother, Bethanie. At first he isn't happy to have visitors but that quickly changes as he gets to know mother and son and thier story.
When danger comes to the pair, he rescues them in a blizzard and again when men come to the mountain after them. I loved the emotional level of the plot and how each character changes as they grow together into a family.
I have several authors that are automatic uploads for me and Kris Michaels is very definitely one of those! I love this series. If you have not read her but you like intrigue, clever spy stuff, hot alphas and spitfire heroines then this is just for you. Never have I been let down. Great plots. Great characters. You feel like you are there, smelling the ranch, mountain, wherever they are. Like you are in the deep brown stuff fighting your way out alongside them. Sitting at the table enjoying the family banter at meal times. The writing pulls you in so that you are living each line. Beautifully written. It’s why I readily give up sleep and eating to read each new instalment, only then to be left waiting for the next one again. Cracking writer! 10 stars!
I highly recommended reading (or re-reading) Dixon’s book before you start this one. It will be a huge help.
Solid installment in the series. Did I love any of the characters? No, not really. Was there a good reason why? No, not really. It was nice, however to have a loose end from Dixon’s book tied up.
I never could wrap my head around living in a cave, though. It was explained in vivid detail, but it just never clicked for me. I think that was part of my problem. I also hoped we’d see more of the Guardians in this book, especially Dixon and Drake, but they definitely took a major step back here.
We did get more explanation about the Shadows and possibly some foreshadowing (ha, ha) about who’s book is next and how many more Shadows we might encounter.
I’m looking forward to another Kris Michaels’ book for sure.
this was definately out on it's own! we hardly hear of Lycos and this story let's you know why. there's a few chinks in Ms Michael's storyline and it seems she has no choice but to write it like this as the antagonists aren't finished. I'm stuck now as thanatos isn't on audible yet. there was no slow build up in this story...it skipped through pretty quick and there wasn't much deep retrospection from any of the main players. lots of background story to fill us in though. I found it unusual that Lycos was so forthcoming with his past and his occupation....for a solitary man he didn't seem to mind sharing???? none of the other guardians/shadows liked to put what they do out there for spouses etc...found it to be a flaw in the story. I missed the rest of the family and hoped the D's where going to meet their family....perhaps in another book.
This is the third book in this series that I finished, and they just keep getting better. Lycos and Bethanie are the pair to beat!
This story had so much going for it: well defined characters, tension and action, nice well-timed romance and great “come uppance” by Lycos. I enjoyed how Lycos gradually learned to respect, then love, both Bethanie and Ethan and how his life moved toward the light. Although Bethanie was weak by circumstances, she was a mama bear when it came to protecting Ethan. As she moved from fear of Lycos towards love, she unconditionally accepted him for who and what he was. I like that.
The antagonists, the Fates, was a nice touch and as the story unfolded it kept the tension right at the surface. Very well done.
This is a bit of an unusual addition to the series because unlike the other books, there is limited involvement from the other members of Guardian. That said, anyone who likes forced proximity or snowed in romances will love this one. The premise is that loner (even for a Guardian Shadow), Lycos, is taking some R&R in his safe house in the mountains when Bethanie, a victim of human trafficking, and her son, dramatically unprepared for the winter weather, come to him seeking sanctuary and protection.
I loved the dynamics between Lycos and Bethanie. I also thought Bethanie’s son was mostly a delight in this book. It think that this is probably my favourite book of the series so far.
WOW! Another exciting story! Ryan is a very interesting man. The beginning of this story was a little deceiving - one would think he was getting together with Miriam but alas they were never meant to be. Along comes Bethanie and her son Ethan. I think Ryan started falling when he had to rescue the two from freezing to death in his mountain. Dog is also very interesting. He is definitely very protective of Ethan. When his family was found, he definitely took matters into his own hands. These Fates are very evil women. Ryan took care of the threat against his family. He also quit Guardian. Bethanie and Ryan started working on their happily ever after. FANTASTIC job Kris! I would recommend this book.
No plot spoilers Potential trigger warning relating to kidnap and sexual exploitation. Be aware that there are some graphic descriptions of violence. The characterisation is outstanding both lead and supporting characters and as ever Kris Michaels weaves a hell of a story. The plotline is totally engaging and the authors ability to draw you in and keep you there is phenomenal. I love the Guardian series, this sidestep of Shadow Guardians is so enjoyable. Each book in the series compliments the main plotline within the Guardian books so I would recommend you read the series from the beginning to obtain the best reading experience. I can't recommend the series highly enough. There are some sex scenes and plenty of swearing.
