The Enochian War #1

Shadows of Divinity

They killed my parents.

They branded me a terrorist.

I'll show them terror...

Enochia is compromised.

The Sanctum. The Legion. The whole damn planet.

And I know what you're thinking. A few days ago, I wouldn't have believed me either.

Then I watched the High General of the Alpha-damned Legion sprout red eyes and tear my parents to bloody pieces.

Now, I have some questions. And a High General to kill.

Carlisle calls them the raknoth. Red-eyed demons from Alpha knows where. He says they're aliens. But then again, he also moves things with his freaking mind—a gift he swears lies dormant in me as well—so I'm starting to get a little unclear on what I can and can't believe anymore.

I don't know what the raknoth want. I don't know how they've taken control of Enochia without anyone noticing. All I know is that they picked the wrong planet to screw with.

My name is Haldin Rais, and I'm going to make them pay...

Luke is a storyteller whose dreams include learning the ways of the Force, becoming a sentient robot, and maybe even one day growing up. Also, lots of zombies… Don't ask.

After studying engineering science at Penn State and neuroengineering at Drexel, Luke finally decided to throw in the towel on actually building a working Iron Man suit, opting instead to simply make things up and write them down. Boy, is he having more fun now.

When he's not holed up in his cave trying to string words together, he can often be found powerlifting, video-gaming, reading, and/or drinking the darkest, most roasty beers he can get his mitts on.

You know what? Enough about Luke. He's not that interesting. But if you'd like to say hi to him for whatever reason, he'd probably be glad to hear from you. Contact him at luke@lukermitchell.com (kind of a silly email address, right?) with questions, critiques, or just a friendly hello!

“For ours is not to ask, but to serve.”
An excellent start to a new series, focused on the Enochians and their frightening discovery of red eyed aliens infliltrated in the highest echelons of the government and military force and its implications.
Exciting from the beginning, the awaking of mental powers, the growing resistance, the battles... all dosed with high quality tension, gripping and thought provoking. The essence of survival, determination and strength is very emotive and compelling. The Fast paced, action driven and no respite is nerve wrecking and thrilling! The lives of the characters is so vivid and realistic I couldn’t help but be drawn into the story. The in-depth and characters’ backgrounds of both Enochians and the evil aliens is gratifying, different point of views that had me thoughtful throughout the book. It captured me from the beginning!
Mitchell, once again demonstrates his high creative imagination.
Looking forward to the rest of the series! I highly recommend it!

Brilliant and exciting, those are the easiest words to use to describe this book.

As we join this story we find the main character, Haldin Raish, a rising star of the Legion and son of the honourable Hero of the Legion Captain Martin Raish; with his best friend Johnny Wingard and they are right in the action in the very first paragraph of the book.
They are well trained legionnaires and respond with pin point accuracy at the targets before them, and when at one point Johnny gets shot and dies, its no big deal...after all, its only a simulator, none of this is real.

Later after leaving his buddy at the legion barracks, Haldin goes home to his mother and father, and they gather round the tv to watch the execution of a terrorist. They watch it out of duty but they dislike executions. The man who is about to be executed is, Andre Kovaks. He believes there is corruption in the legion, perhaps even as high as the Sanctum, the highest authority in the land, and he tried to get information supposedly to back his insane claim. The Sanctum had branded him a terrorist and had sentenced him to die for his heresy. They watch him die, but Haldin feels restless about it. He is unsure why the man, who seemed no more than mentally sick, had to be executed. To Haldin, it seemed an excessive response to his law breaking.

Struggling to be a strong perfect soldier like his father, Haldin frequently finds himself coming up short in this situation. He is not like his father, who is rigid and formal, even at home.
Haldin finds his relationship with his father difficult and becomes uneasy about a rumour reported to him by his best buddy Johnny, that is seems to indicate that his father is having an affair with his secretary. Haldin is shocked by this and speaks to his mother who tells him all is well and that his father has been distracted and uneasy of late due to some of the orders that he has been receiving of late.

The truth reason his father has been whispering in dark corners with his secretary, is far more shocking that we could have guessed. When we finally read it the shock value is intense and was far from what I was expecting.

A man at the top of the Legion turns out to be someone that Haldin and his family are seriously affected by. That is all I will say on the matter, you will definitely have to read it for yourself to find out the shocking truth....it will blow your mind!

This story is very well written and the action scenes were wildly explosive and great fun to read. With a shock value that will surprise you. It grabs you from the first time blood is spilled and takes you on a whirlwind ride that will make you completely fall for it.

This is a story which will remain with me for a long long time. It rooted me to the spot and had me gasping with surprise as I read on. Page after page of exciting scenes that left me dying for more. The quality of the writing is second to none. I was enthralled by it all the way through.

Haldin Raish was shooting back at the enemy from a bullet-riddled skimmer. His friend, Johnny Wingard, was beside him, acting very nonchalant, with his gun carelessly sitting on the ground. He was making inappropriate comments about High General Kublich’s sexy hot servitor with the curves. He continued to tease Hal and was not taking the current attack seriously. Between the two of them providing alternating cover for each other, they were taking down a number of hostiles. They defeated all 12, but Johnny was shot right at the end when he jumped up in an arrogant move guaranteed to get him killed. Haldin keyed in a command on his holodisplay and again called Johnny an idiot! The street dissolved as the simulator returned to its default state.

Hal returned home to watch the Sanctum execution of Andre Kovaks who had claimed there was corruption in the Legion and even the Sanctum, then continued on to rant about malicious aliens infiltrating Enochia and how the Sanctum and the Legion were going to take over the world. Hal felt he needed help and not necessarily a death sentence, since it was obvious he was delusional. But this time, when Kovaks was hanged, his father’s face did not reflect his certainty that divine justice had been served, but rather showed doubt and unease! What was going on?

High General Kublich came over that night for dinner. Hal wasn’t looking forward to the visit. When his father and Kublich went to the study to talk, Hal went to his room to watch a vid. But suddenly gunshots sounded and his mother screamed! When he ran into the darkened living room, Hal saw a dark figure with red demon eyes attacking his mother. His muscles locked in place, he heard Kublich’s voice coming from the creature! His dad stumbled into the room, badly injured, and fired three shots at Kublich as the monster leaped forward and broke his father’s neck! Hal finally turned and ran for the door but was paralyzed again – until the odd man Hal had seen at the mess hall earlier walked through the front door, energy crackling around him. A blast of light and sound knocked Hal to the floor, then someone grabbed him and his world went dark!

Wow, this book gives a new meaning to “action-packed thrills”!!! “Shadows of Divinity” is a helpful prequel for The Harvesters series, fleshing out the backstory and the main characters for a better understanding of future events. It also provides good character development as Hal comes into and manages his own powers. The writing is really excellent, bringing the world alive to the reader who becomes a participant rather than just an observer of the events. The effect is amazing and is what brings these books alive. Twists and turns abound, the action never slows down! Don’t miss this one – it will show you just how good the rest of them are going to be!

Luke has done it again. This is one of those books that you have trouble putting down. Once the hero meets the girl (several chapters in), the book owns you. Prior to that, it is just very interesting as Luke unfolds the story and sets the stage. Luke's writing is less on the scientific side and more on the fantasy side. That isn't a knock, just letting future readers know what to expect. While I am not a fantasy fan, I do love Luke's story telling. This is the 7th book of his I have read. The books have lots of drama, but are heavy on the light-hearted humor side as well. I find myself grinning alot as I read them - which means I am enjoying the read - right... Which is the whole point of reading a book for fun. There is lots of subtle humor to go with the more obvious humor. I like that Luke's heros are a bit flawed and are not the "invincible can do nothing wrong" types. While this new series is in the same universe as his Harvesters Series, you don't have to read the Harvesters series first. In fact, this series is written to take place prior to the Harvester Series and some of the characters will show up in the Harvester Series - which I also highly recommend. You can read this book, then jump to the Harvester series. There will be the spoiler in that you will know which characters survive to travel to Earth (Spoiler - this doesn't take place on Earth - but they do speak English, mostly).
The boy meets girl scenes alone are worth the price of the book. The young hero getting completely tongue tied while the more mature young lady toys with him is classic. The hero's older, wiser mentor has such a dry sense of humor that he must be British, well their version of British. OK, before the review becomes longer than the book, just buy it. You will enjoy it. Disclaimer: I bought the book and this is my opinion - or is Luke actually a Raknoth controlling me.... think about it....

Shadows of Divinity

My oh my, Luke Mitchell, has come through for us readers big time.

This story about Haldin Raish, a teenager caught up in a maelstrom he doesn't understand and finds out he has powers beyond his wildest dreams. He learns to use them by a man that becomes his mentor/best friend to fight against an alien presence that has invaded their planet Enochia.

This book was very well written. Even though it is a spin off from the Harvester Series, anyone can pick this book up and read it and understand everything that is going on.

The characters are so well developed you feel for them. You hurt with them, you cheer for them, and you cry for them. I can't count the times I welled up with emotions reading this book. Hal is a very likeable character. You want to see him succeed. See him please his mentor. See him get his glory and revenge. See him fall in love with the beautiful girl.

This book has a lot of action. Don't let my talk of gooey emotions make you not want to buy this book. There are a lot of fights and alien beatings to make any man proud to read this book. Not to mention the mind control. You'll have to read this to find out what I mean. 😉

All and all, this book is for everyone looking for a damn good book. Thrills, spills, action, love, conquest, this book has it all. I highly recommend it. Thank you, Luke Mitchell for a smashing good read!

"One deceased Legion tyro reporting for duty."
Luke Mitchell is a canny wordsmith, able to draw vibrant pictures in the mind without acres of description. His characters are colourful, too, whether they are human or - something else. This first book of a new series is set in times prior to those of the marvellous Harvesters stories, before the presence of the brutal green skinned, crimson eyed Raknoth was generally known.
Haldin Raish had led a privileged life as son of Sanctuary's esteemed Captain Martin Raish, and was soon to move from tyro to full military. Then both of his parents were killed by the man who was his father's superior. At least, that was who he had seemed to be. But Haldin saw them die, saw the blazing red eyes of the killer and would have died also had he not been unexpectedly rescued by a suspicious older man called Carlisle. This man might seem a bit crazy but he'd saved Haldin's life and had his own reasons for wanting to get rid of Adrian Kublich, High General of the Legion, the murderer of Haldin's parents.

Combining immaginative story line, against-the-odds battling, credible (if outrageous) characters, monsters and heros, humour, emergent psychic powers and a late teenager's growing interest in a particular pair of lovely blue eyes, this is one book not to be missed. Oh, and there might just be a world to save, too.

Barbara Sanders WAN field reporter) news flash had reported Andre Kovaks was executed.
1-day, I entered the dining room to find my parents & High General Adrian Kublich all slumped forward in their chairs, covered in blood.
It was the Sanctum Guard that carried out the executions.
Carlisle managed to save Haldin “Hal” Raish (son, Legionnaire) from the massacre.
High General Kublich would see to it Carlisle & Elise were hunted day/night.

I do not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing free books from publishers & authors. Therefore, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written paranormal book. It was quite easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a huge description list of unique characters, settings, facts etc. to keep track of. This could also make another great paranormal movie, an animated cartoon, or better yet a mini-TV series. It wasn’t as exciting as I hoped so I will only rate it at 3/5 stars.

Thank you for the free author; Amazon Digital Services LLC. Kindle Mobi; book

Ultimately, I wanted to like this book more than I did. The concept caught my eye immediately: Star Wars meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Starship Troopers? I'm up for that!

The premise sold me on giving it a try, and the first chapters were exeptional, but - to give a minor SPOILER - after the first fights, we're 25 percent into the thing before we get any more action. There's a lot of talk, a lot of backstory, a lot of deciding whether or not to help the psychic superpowered resistance who are the only ones who can detect and fight the body-snatching entities that have seized control of the top levels of power in this Starship Troopersesq authoritarian world...and only then do we get some action.

Things pick up then, but I'd have preferred things to kick off earlier, perhaps with a specific and pressing goal to be attained immediately, and the main character along for the fight as his unearthly powers develop. It's established at the beginning that the kid is a trained and proficient soldier, not a farmboy, which puts him one up on Luke Skywalker.

But preferences about pacing aside, the author's undeniably good, and I intend to try something else by him.

A Must-Read for Harvesters Fans!

So you love Harvesters, but have been wondering about Enochia, you say? Well, wonder no more! Luke Mitchell has a spin-off series that stands alone, and tells the story of Hal, Elise, and Johnny, too. How the Enochians we meet in the Harvesters series got mixed up with the raknoth.

This first novel in the series is told from Hal’s point of view. It’s his story, from age 17, when he’s an elite trainee, son of a well-know, high-level official and hero, being groomed to be a Legion soldier.

Things tilt radically in Hal’s world early in the story, and get worse from there. It’s a classic “hero’s journey” in many respects, with a mentor and villains to deal with, and of course, being Luke Mitchell, many tense battle scenes and lines of snarky dialogue.

Score points for a badass female character, even though the women are few and far between.

The whole novel is very cinematic, and ends without much closure, so be prepared to get the next book as soon as you finish this one—you’ll want to find out what happens next!

Shadows of Divinity is the first book in The Enochian War Trilogy. This can be read as a standalone. This is a prequel for The Harvesters series but those do not need to be read first to read this one. There is violence. Once again the author has brought to life the struggle to survive in a world gone crazy. Or has it? If you have read the Harvester series, you will see a familiar character here in this story...though you may, like me, had hoped he died somewhere in space. Oh well. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

If you enjoyed the Harvesters series, Shadows of Divinity is a certain must read for you. If you haven't read that series yet, this one can be read first since it comes before that series. In Harvesters, I wasn't that interested in Hal's character, so I started this story that focuses on he and Elise with some hesitation. Totally misplaced. The author used this story to tell the story of Hal's family, how he came to acquire Jedi-like powers, and of course how he and Elise fell in love. I got wrapped up in it and really enjoyed it.

This story take place prior to the events in the Harvester series and on Enochia filling in many details on how Haldin, Elise and company came to be part of the fight. There are still many questions left to be answered by the upcoming books in the Enochian War series, so there should be plenty of good story telling left to enjoy.

Once again, Luke has shown that he can fill a book with lots of action while not neglecting character development and relationships. This books starts out at a run and rarely pauses long enough to let you catch your breath.

this book took sometime for me to get into but once i did it was enjoyable to a certain extent. I enjoyed Hal and the other characters as well but the story kind of dragged in certain places.. especially when the mental fighting was going on... just a little to much going on with that as well as other parts of the book as well.. the fight scenes were long too.. it did feel like i was engrossed in a long movie tho so i will give it a star just for that.. i will continue the trilogy but for now i need a break before i read book 2

A planet being invaded by aliens who can read minds and take over bodies. Only a few people have a chance to intervene and even then it is not a given fact that they can do anything against the opposition. Hal sees his parents murdered by one of the aliens and with only the help from Carlisle can he get away from his own death, Hal learns he has latent powers but no time to learn them correctly. Only his mental strength looking for revenge keeps things in perceptive and he finds he is stronger than he seems but time may be against the good guys. A great book!

All the snarky adventure

This was so much fun. After reading the Harvesters series and loving it I was eager for more, but wasn't sure if a prequel set on a planet other than Earth would scratch the itch. I shouldn't have worried. This was awesome. Ioved learning more about the Enochians and their troubles before they came to help rescue Earth. If you're a fan of snarky underdog characters banding together to save the world, this is absolutely for you.

I have had this novel in my TBR pile for nearly a year, and I must apologize to the author. This is the first novel I have read my Luke Mitchell. and I was quite impressed. I am not so much into the blood and gore, but in this novel it is really an important part of the script. This is a good tale, and I recommend it. I received this novel from BookFunnel. This is my honest and true review,

A suspenseful and action-packed prequel, this book drew me in and wouldn't let go. I'm looking forward to Book 2! The characters are great, the villains are hiss worthy, and the world of this book is well etched and clearly defined.

Such an awful, whiney prattling book. A lot of narrative was not needed as it didn’t even add to the story or character.
