A suspenseful journey through France leads an ambitious art historian and an adventurous journalist to team up--in more ways than one . . .
Workaholic art historian Aurora Black doesn't have time for fairy tales or Prince Charmings, even in the most romantic city in the world. She's recently been hired by a Parisian auction house for a job that could make or break her career. Unfortunately, daredevil journalist Cedric Castel seems intent on disrupting Aurora's routine.
As Aurora and Cedric embark on a journey across France, they get more than they bargained for as they find themselves battling rogue antiques dealers, intrigue and danger, personal demons--and a growing attraction to each other. But with the help of a fairy godmother or two, they may both find their happily ever afters . . .
Originally from Lyon in France, Marie studied History and Law at university there before moving to Lancashire in England where she worked in a variety of jobs, from PA in a busy university department to teacher of French in schools and colleges. Writing, however, was always her passion, and she spends her free time making up stories. She writes contemporary and historical romance. Her titles include A SPELL IN PROVENCE, ANGEL HEART, THE LION'S EMBRACE and DANCING FOR THE DEVIL, published by Accent Press. Her new romantic comedy, LITTLE PINK TAXI, is published by Choc Lit.

Paris-
The most romantic city in the world!
Or is it?
For Aurora, Paris harbors no “Prince Charming”, no “Happy ever after”, or fairy tales. She has no confidence in her self-image, in part, due to the scars left behind from a tragic car accident that claimed the life of her parents, when she was a child.
So, no, Aurora hasn’t traveled to France for romantic reasons. As a Paleographer, Aurora is in Paris in a professional capacity, having been hired to authenticate an ancient manuscript. However, she immediately runs afoul of Cédric Castel, a journalist with an adventurous streak. Cédric is convinced Aurora is in on a sinister scheme with her employers, who have hired a group of Russian thugs as guards. No, that’s not suspicious!
But as Cédric begins to shadow her, he realizes she is sincere and very good at her job- which could put her in grave danger. Having gotten off on the wrong foot, the couple is surprised by the level of attraction they share and the chemistry that bounces off them like fire and ice.
Meanwhile, Aurora and Cédric must also cope with various personal issues, while they work to uncover a stunning conspiracy.
I enjoyed every moment of this book! The premise is original and Aurora’s career choice is interesting for starters.
The story moves at a brisk pace, but not at the expense of the characters or plot development. The characterizations are marvelous, as is the dialogue. The banter between Aurora and Cédric is truly delightful and amusing, but at times poignant. There is plenty of mystery and adventure to go along with the romance and was very suspenseful at times.
Overall, this is a well- rounded story, emotive, suspenseful, but packed with plenty of fairy tale charm. Fans of contemporary romance and romantic suspense will especially enjoy this one, but there is a little something in this one for everyone.
4☆ A Fun Contemporary Romance with a Mystety & History Twist!
Aurora is a very successful and passionate Art Historian. If only she was as passionate about finding love and learning to love herself!! So when she gets the chance to work on authenticating an rare ancient Manuscript she jumps at the chance.
For Aurora this should be a breeze but things are not all they seem, especially when she meets journalist Cedric who is convinced Aurora isn't quiet who she says she is.
Cedric and Aurora's spark between them lights up and romance could be on the cards. As they both embark on adventures to uncover the mystery behind the manuscript and uncover secrets.
Maybe Cedric is the one to convince Aurora that there is such a thing as a romantic happy ever after!
I loved Cedric and Aurora, they are both so deeply flawed but so very endearing and relatable. The wit and banter between them was brilliant it was so lovely to watch there relationship flourish.
A Paris Fairy Tale is a wonderfully engaging, fun and heart warming story, shrouded in mystery, romance, wit, danger, history and adventure set in a stunning location. The pace flowed along perfectly, with enough suspense and intriguing twists to keep you turning the pages.
So if you are looking for a Contemporary Romance with an Element of Danger, Plenty of Mystery and History then you Need to Pick up a Copy of A Paris Fairy Tale!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
OMG! This book, I am absolute love with it! There are not enough words to really do justice to how wonderful this book is. With a will they won’t they romance, mystery, adventure, twists and turns, plus add in some beautiful French scenery and you have a perfect story. This is proper fairy tale, but with a stonking great twist. with a young woman with self confidence issues wanting to believe that there are prince charming’s in the world, yet she is a realist and is far to old to believe in white knights on trusty steeds. But what about rough around the edges, leather clad Frenchmen, who come rolling in on a motorbike? 😉
Aurora Black (Is that the most gorgeous name, or what?) is a workaholic art historian/palaeographer, she has worked hard to get to the position she is in but she strives to step out of the shadow of the shining light of her illustrious grandfather and be recognised as being good at her job in her right, not just because she is related to the great Palaeographer; Augustus Black , always putting her career first before anything else, especially love. She has gained a nickname of ‘Black Ice’ for her frosty and no-nonsense persona, and because she won’t let anyone close enough to melt the ice that surrounds her heart, she thinks that because she believes she isn’t very pretty (Come on what woman doesn’t think the same?) and her limp, what man would be interested in her? – Oh, Aurora how wrong you are!
When she is offered the job to authenticate one of the rarest medieval documents around, Aurora jumps at the chance to show that she can do the job. She definitely has not gone to France to have a sordid affair with a handsome Frenchman, no matter what her grandmothers nurse says. She is there in a professional capacity only, she is far too bust with her work. No matter that Paris is the city of love and romance, she has lost all self confidence in not just herself but in her image too, my heart break for her at times, she genuinely does think that she is grotesque just because of the scars she carries from a car accident. She has sunk into the deep dark shell and hides who true beauty from the world behind her glacial façade, but she doesn’t expect one man to see past that, a prince charming perhaps?
I think every woman will see themselves in Aurora, she is one of those characters that so many people can relate to in some way, I know I do, there are so many little things about her, that just got me think; OMG, that is so me!! I love how she is in her thirties instead of being a young whipper-snapper, its so refreshing to finally have a heroine who isn’t perfect, who has her own flaws who has her own body hang ups that she so desperately wats to hide, she is the real woman’s heroine. Thank you Maire for bringing such a wonderful lady to the world!
Adventurer and journalist; Cedric Castel – Oh goodness me, do I love this guy or what? He is in Paris to finally uncover and catch the people behind a huge story he has been working on, I won’t give too much away is a huge part of the plot and I am not going to spoil the beautiful story for you all, but I will say that it involves a nasty as hell Russian art collector and the project Aurora has been asked to work on, plus a few other aspects that are all connected – but that’s it my lips are sealed!!
I love that Cedric – even though he has his own issues, he has darkness surrounding him too, he instantly sees Aurora, he may not instantly like her as he is suspicious of her involvement in the story he is covering but his is fascinated by her. As well as being ridiculously handsome, I mean swoon-worthy gorgeous; those amber eyes can make any woman with breathe in her body to melt like ice cream on a hot day, but I loved his real cheeky, lovable rogue persona, he is fun, enigmatic and brooding as well as serious and there is a real romantics soul hidden away. I just adore this man, I need this leather clad, biker in my life – sigh!
Cedric who believes Aurora is in on the nasty scheme begins to shadow her, which doesn’t go well with her as they didn’t exactly meet on the best terms, he can’t read her and judge her character like he can others as she is so closed off and she finds his far too irritating, yet neither of them can deny that there is an attraction there, there is buzz between them. So between them as well as the mystery that they are both embroiled in they both must learnt o over come each of their own personal issues that run deep, that keeps them both from moving forward and to learn to trust and love.
It’s no secret, that I am a huge fan of Marie Laval’s work, she has a unique and magical writing voice, that is definitely one of a kind as there are very few authors that can match her flawless writing. This is a fast paced, engaging and mesmerising story with a delightful romance, the characters are beautifully developed and are completely relatable, they have a lovely chemistry, you can feel their attraction each other sizzle of the page. The plot is highly original, suspenseful, the settings and scenery is just stunning and its all wrapped up with a charming fairy tale-esque bow, I love it!
Oh such books remind me of movies where the main leads are suspicious of each other initially, but later while exploring the city and running away from the thugs while solving a mystery, they fall in love. And when such a scene occurs in Paris, the charm of the story is doubled.
My first book by Marie Laval, I was gently amused by the two main characters. Aurora was the Paleographer, hired to authenticate an ancient manuscript. Cedric was the journalist who was sure that she was part of the nefarious scheme. The author had him shadowing her down the streets of Paris, attraction slowly building between them. I loved the depth in their characterization, they had their own past with their flaws.
The fast pace of the book had me skipping along with these characters to get to the mystery. Their banter had me grinning, it was just so cute. With my craving for thrillers, this book had a great secret in the world of art which satisfied the inner thrill-seeker in me. Swift pace, great writing, lovely flawed characters, suspense and romance kept me stuck to this story.
History, mystery, romance, and fun. This book had it all and made a great breakfast read. I needed a break from life for a few hours, and this book gave it to me.
This is an intriguing romantic suspense centred around the valuation and validation of historical art and manuscripts. Art historian and Paleographer, Aurora Black may have been named after a fairy tale but, following the untimely death of her parents when she was only five years old, she's had anything but a fairy tale upbringing and remembers little of her childhood. Now she's been tasked with ascertaining if the manuscript that is to be put up for auction is genuine or not.
This could make or break Aurora's career - especially as journalist Cédric Castel is intent on discovering all he can about her and her work. He's also seeking evidence - but she's not sure what for. Initially suspicious of her, he discovers she's genuinely and honestly doing her job. This alters the dynamics between them and, as they set out to discover the truth, Aurora will find herself in danger, rescues will be necessary and more perils to be faced. The banter between them is hilarious at times! As mutual attraction between them grows, so does the pressure on them. Can they work together to prove the truth or will they be forced apart as the threats increase and secrets are uncovered?
What a great read this proved to be. It is an action packed story where, despite the romantic Parisian setting, it is the history, mystery, suspense and, of cours, romance that takes centre stage. There are so many twists and turns as the story unfolds that it just keeps you turning the pages to discover what happens next. The characters are well developed and revelations regarding the childhoods of both Cédric and Aurora have distorted their connections to their family. Aurora's relationship with her grandmother also has some shocking revelations, ones that turn the whole story around in an unexpected manner. This is an adventurous investigation where secrets from the past and present affect the lives of many more than either initially assumed possible. It is a great read for anyone who enjoys fairy tale romance or romantic suspense.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book and this is my honest review after choosing to read it.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book from the tour organiser.
If you are looking for an adventurous romance with lovely characters and plenty of drama along the way, then look no further than A PARIS FAIRY TALE by Marie Laval.
Aurora Black is a smart, sexy woman who hides her lighter side under a strict and professional facade. She is one of the best art historian/palaeographers in the world and Aurora has thrown everything into her career for two reasons - firstly because she loves it so much, and secondly because she wants to prove herself in the art history community where many of them knew her grandfather. She doesn't have time for love or happily ever afters so when she gets the opportunity to authenticate one of the oldest and rarest manuscripts to be discovered, she jumps at the chance and soon finds herself in Paris, but love is the last thing on her mind. But when Aurora finds herself caught up in an adventure with a handsome journalist, who knows what could happen?
Entertaining, romantic, and sassy, A PARIS FAIRY TALE by Marie Laval is an enjoyable story about self-belief, love, and finding the strength to go after what you want. Aurora is a wonderful character and as the story developed I longed to see her open up and believe in herself a little more.
A PARIS FAIRY TALE is a delightful read and is sure to please romance fans everywhere.
This book was rather a lovely surprise – I’d expected the modern-day fairy tale and the romantic Paris setting, but I really wasn’t prepared for such a gripping story, a real depth of intriguing research into the intricacies of palaeography, and a pacy read set against the dark world of art theft and human trafficking. I suspect that the blurb might lead you too towards the notion that it’s a rather light read – and the romance that runs through it is absolutely lovely – but the whole has a very satisfying edge of suspense and mystery that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
The main characters are wonderful – both damaged, both hiding the experiences of their pasts. Cédric is bad boy turned good – with the added plus of being distinctly hot – with many secrets that give him considerable depth, and allow his character to develop as the story progresses. Aurora’s damage is rather more visible, her buttoned-up Ice Queen persona concealing so much childhood hurt – and it was an absolute joy to see her opening up, slowly unpeeling her layers of protection, allowing others to get a little closer. The interaction between them both is wonderfully handled – two steps forward, three steps back – and their exchanges are so well written, with plenty of gentle humour, and that clever parry and thrust as they feel the power of their mutual attraction and struggle to fight it.
The great characterisation applies to the secondary characters too – particularly the superbly drawn older characters of Luigi and Simone (and I just loved the jazz club), the sultry and predatory Carmen, and Aurora’s grandmother – and those who play smaller but significant roles as the story unfolds.
The plotting is excellent, the whole story considerably more convoluted than you might be expecting – there’s some fascinating detective work as the tension builds, with detail that feels particularly authentic, and a considerable amount of threat and real danger. It must have been difficult to marry the fairy tale romantic thread with those thriller elements, but this book really succeeds at every level, neither element taking anything away from the other – this really is very accomplished and confident writing.
And for the romantics, what setting could be better than Paris – so lovingly and vividly recreated by the author, those lovely corners the passing tourist might never see, the little details like the balconies and the blossoms on the paulownias trees, the squares and bridges and gardens, behind the scenes at the Opéra. And, in keeping with the story’s harder edges, we see Paris’ darker and hidden side too, the alleys and doorways, the realities of life on the streets, the areas the tourist really wouldn’t want to visit.
This was a book I thoroughly enjoyed – and I recommend it most highly.
Are you a fan of history? Of romance? Of mystery? Then this is a book that is right up your alley, because it ticks all of these boxes.
The author has taken a big portion of romance, added a dollop of mystery and finished it off with a pinch of history.
Even under the coldest of exteriors there is a burning heart burried. It only takes the right person to melt the wall of ice. But nobody ever said it would be easy. There are a lot of barriers that have to be overcome before the happy ever after can begin and some are pretty dangerous.
Secrets are revealed, thugs are exposed and love is found. I loved the glimpse we get in the world of a palaeographer. It was a very interesting addition that took the book to a higher level. 5 stars.
This is a modern day fairy tale with added mystery. The main character Aurora, who works with ancient manuscripts and documents, is asked to go to Paris to look over a document that has been found there. Aurora has no time or interest in a relationship, but once in Paris she meets Cedric who may change all that. With a journey across France, with bad guys on their tale, will Cedric be Aurora’s Prince Charming?
I have only read one other book by this author, Little Pink Taxi, but I loved it! So I was very pleased to read another by her. The story is a little different to other romantic stories I’ve read, but that’s what makes this books by this author so much fun to read! Aurora is a great character, a definite workaholic who carries many physical and emotional scars from her past. I love that she is a Palaeographer, and found the whole story of old manuscripts and documents completely original!! Cedric is a journalist who initially thinks that Aurora is in on some dastardly criminal plan involving the ancient manuscript in Paris. He also carries a lot of emotional baggage, but I do love his character in every way!! He’s obviously one of the good guys in life and who could blame Aurora if she fell for his charms!!
The story is full of charm, romance and intrigue! Completely different to other books of this genre, this book had me hooked from the beginning. It has a little bit of everything in it, so is perfect for covering lovers of all different genres!! I loved the mystery and intrigue in it and of course the romance goes without saying! The chemistry between Aurora and Cedric was smokin’ hot, but even with everything being so apparently obvious, the story twists and turns so you can’t guess how it’s going to end up until it’s revealed.
Like the other book that I read by this author, this one is delightful, fun, romantic and suspenseful!! The location is wonderful with the Paris scenes making you feel like you’re actually there! It keeps you hooked with the action and mystery and it makes your heart fill with warmth with the love and friendship. Would definitely recommend!
This is my first introduction to the work of Marie Laval and I was swept away with this modern day fairy tale that was filled with a dashing hero, who was known for helping those in need and a shy heroine who was striving to be recognised in the field of art historians but she also desperately wanted the love of others and to be accepted for who she was. When Aurora Black, Art Historian, was granted the job of researching a manuscript believed to be 100's of years old she couldn't believe her luck. The manuscript was safely stored at an auction house in Paris awaiting authentication prior to it being auctioned. Aurora was known as Black Ice for her coldness in the art world but underneath her smart exterior there was a vulnerable young woman who had experienced heartbreak and tragedy at such a young age. Aurora kept this hard persona to protect herself. However, when she is consumed with her work and is dazzled by the ancient manuscript and it's artwork a softer side to Aurora is revealed and her face glows with the love of her work, art and it's history. Whilst Aurora is authenticating the manuscript local journalist Cédric Castel is assigned to shadow Aurora and write up an article with her findings. However Cédric has ulterior motives for this article and he believes there is a dark underworld of crime revolved around the art world. A friendship of sorts soon blossoms between Aurora and Cédric but when danger looms their lives and others are put at risk. Is there a link to the manuscript and to the recent bouts of accidents? A Paris Fairy Tale is an intriguing romance filled with an ancient mystery that dances with danger but sweeps you under it's fairy tale spell.
I really loved this story. Set in one of my favourite cities - Paris - I was enthralled with how the author used the setting as a backdrop to the central plot. I could almost hear the hustle and bustle of the city as the characters moved around. Essentially a love story but also a mystery as well, I thought both elements of the plot were very cleverly woven together through the carefully drawn cast of characters. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I loved this book!! I read Marie Laval’s debut book, Little Pink Taxi, but I think this one might be my favorite. I love romances with a bit of mystery with a dash of art theft thrown in. I found Aurora and Cedric to be charming and dynamic together. I definitely could not put this one down. I’m eager to see what Laval writes next!!
This is the fourth book I've read by Marie and once again, I loved it. I liked how the author develops the relationships between main characters and how she brings in elements of history through her research, which she delves into quite deeply. In short, another romance with definite twists and turns.
If you’re in the mood for a love story that certainly does not start out that way, is full of intrigue, a touch of the magic found in fairy tales, and two people who will discover there is more to each other than meets the eye then you will want to check out A PARIS FAIRY TALE. It’s quite easy to get caught up in Aurora and Cédric’s journey toward their personal happy ending. Yet it’s not going to be an easy journey since neither one knows as much about the situations they find themselves in as they believe they do. Aurora is going to have to let down her guard and trust in what Cédric sees in her, and Cédric is going to have to let go of his quest for “the truth” and accept what is the actual truth of the situation. And, yes, those two types of “truth” are very far apart.
I loved the many unique aspects of A PARIS FAIRY TALE. But I was especially fascinated by Aurora’s career as a Paleographer. Discovering a character who actually studies and understands the nuances of these ancient manuscripts was such a unique touch to this story. Add in Aurora’s personal history, and I’m hooked from the start.
I will admit that Cédric’s early actions made him a bit harder to warm up to, but he eventually turned himself around – or perhaps it was simply an attitude change as he got to know Aurora that did it for me. Together they are a fascinating couple with lots of banter, chemistry, and the feeling of being right for each other.
A PARIS FAIRY TALE is many things – a Romance, a Romantic Suspense and an adventure that will easily capture your attention from the first page to the last. There is a definite danger, bad guys to avoid, a bit of a mystery to solve, but above all, this is a love story that shows the truth of seeing beneath the surface to find the true beauty in anyone or any situation. I enjoyed myself in this world and would not hesitate to recommend A PARIS FAIRY TALE to any reader who loves a really good Romance or Romantic Suspense story.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Swoon! A book that has every base covered - gorgeous setting, go-getting characters, history, mystery, romance and thriller vibes! What more could you want from a book?! I loved every page!!
Aurora is committed to her work and she is a much respected art historian, which means she travels all over delving into the past. She finds herself in Paris at the request of a top auction house and she wants to prove that she is worthy of the work they are trusting her with. Romance is the last thing on her mind!
She soon comes across the path of Cedric who is a journalist used to getting his own way and never taking no as an answer. When he sniffs out a story it is just coincidence that Aurora may be getting in his way! He wants to do a story on the work she does - she disagree but soon finds that having Cedric around might help her out when things start to take a sinister turn as she finds out more about the manuscript at the centre of her work.
I really love Aurora as a character - so devoted to her work and not easily distracted but you do notice chinks in her armour when things begin to turn a little darker and the truth about her past comes to light and you totally understand what is pushing her to do well in her work.
And she is reluctant to take a chance on people considering she has been lied to and had her trust in others shattered so when Cedric shows up, you understand her reluctance to let him into her life - even if he does seem to appear when she needs him the most.
Aurora and Cedric are such wonderful main characters to follow - devoted to their jobs but also quite playful with their banter and I loved being in their company! There are twists and turns galore and the pace really builds up nicely towards the end as things came to a head! A wonderfully modern fairy tale!!
Original, magical and mysterious. This romantic suspense set in contemporary Paris has a complex, fast-paced plot, believably flawed characters, a mystery to solve, and an engaging romance between two unlikely lovers.
Aurora recovers from a childhood tragedy, with emotional and physical scars. Instead of being treasured by her grandparents, they provide material necessities but not emotional succour. Only her innate courage and intelligence saves her from obscurity. She studies hard, and now with a doctorate, is an authority on ancient manuscripts and an Art Historian. Lost in her famous grandfather’s shadow, she receives a prestigious commission. Determined to show she is worthy of the role. Even in this, it appears Aurora is being manipulated.
Investigative journalist Cédric’s barren childhood has left its scars, but a good education, streetwise intelligence, and the love and guidance of an elderly couple foil his criminal inclinations. Now he works for those who cannot protect themselves, his latest investigation draws Aurora’s boss into his sights, but is she involved or an innocent?
The chemistry between the two protagonists is realistic and the verbal sparring amusing. As the mystery deepens and the ethos of menace increases, they are drawn together, unlikely allies, full of mistrust and unwanted sexual attraction. The dynamic between Aurora and Cédric is the basis of a fairy tale style romance played out in the streets of Paris and France.
The plot is complex with good twists and underscored with danger. It is full of vivid images, which hold the readers’ interest. The cast of characters are well-drawn and complement the plot and protagonists beautifully.
The ending is believable and magical, as every fairy tale should be.
I received a copy of this book from ChocLit in return for an honest review.
For Cedric and Aurora life is not about fairy tales, it is about work, shutting out the past and discovering the truth at all costs.
Cedric Castel is no Prince Charming. He is rude and invasive; a journalist out to get information and a story before anything else. However, the more I got to know him as the story unfurled, the more he began to charm me. His charity work, his campaigning for the underdog and his troubled past all opened up a soft spot for him in my heart and I wasn’t the only one. Aurora Black felt it too. Tough and ice cold on the outside, Aurora is no ordinary heroine waiting for her Knight in shining armour to rescue her. Happier in her field of expertise (ancient illustrated manuscripts) than socialising with others, her knowledge and integrity are about to be put to the test with her contract at a Paris auction house. The manuscripts might come to life through her eyes and fingers, but what if the truth behind the one she is in Paris to study is not quite all it first seemed? Her journey of discovery will give her more than the answers she bargained for.
One of the things I loved about this book is that as well as giving us all the ingredients for a fairy tale set in Paris, Marie also plays with the fairy tale theme throughout the book. The references made to some of the more significant fairy tale moments were great fun. She also gives us passion, for their causes (amongst other things), the magic of music and the possibility of romance, all perfectly balanced with troubled childhoods, heartbreak and dealings with unscrupulous money launderers and traffickers. The more I read, the more entwined in the story I became and the more I wanted a happy-ever-after ending.
A really nice romance - with a bit of mystery thrown in! What's not to like?
Doctor Aurora Black is following in her grandfather's footsteps as a respected art historian. Having been sought out, she is hired to work for an auction house in Paris - the pinnacle of her career so far. Very focused on her work, Aurora find herself distracted by Cedric Castel, a journalist who seems to turn up everywhere she goes . . .
A well-written and enjoyable tale with a fairly predictable storyline, this is an easy read which I raced through. The mystery side involves a hint of menace, but no more than that. Aurora blossoms during her stint in the most romantic city of the world, and the people she meets along the way are all developed characters and entirely believable. A lovely read but perhaps just a bit too easy, if you know what I mean. No surprises in this one, it headed exactly where I thought it would from the very beginning .. a little twist or two along the way wouldn't have gone amiss. Perhaps I'm just a bit jaded with straightforward romances? Hmm, perhaps. A good read for fans of the genre and one I'm happy to give three and a half stars.
A Paris Fairy Tale is the second book by Marie Laval that I've read. I enjoyed Little Pink Taxi, but this book is my favourite of the two.
Aurora Black is a dedicated workaholic with low self-esteem, because of the scars and limp she was left with after the car accident that killed her parents. She doesn't remember much about them or her early childhood, although her Grandmother paints a picture of neglect and poverty due to her mother's flighty attitude.
When we meet Aurora, she is leaving for France, as she's been hired by Florent Maupas to work on a rare manuscript, previously thought to have been destroyed. Once in Paris, she meets Cédric Castel, a journalist who is suspicious of her and believes she is involved in the criminal activities of Maupas and his associates.
What follows is an exciting and intriguing story, with twists and shocking discoveries in both their professional and personal lives as Cédric and Aurora attempt to uncover the truth about the manuscript, and break down the barriers they have erected between each other.
A Paris Fairy Tale is a well-written, emotive, action-packed romantic suspense novel and was a delight to read.
I was whisked away to the city of love from the very first flip of the kindle page. As a lover of history and contemporary romance I found a plot involving medieval manuscripts, underhand blackmarket tactics, a cool hero who plays the saxophone in a jazz club and a heroine worth rooting for most beguiling. Aurora Black is no bimbo, she is well-versed in the world of ancient manuscripts and just needs to believe in herself and her abilities a bit more to achieve her full potential. Nicknamed BLACK ICE, her frosty exterior conceals a soft heart and a love of history. Maybe there is someone in the wings who could melt that 'ice' forever. But first, there are obstacles to overcome: learning who to trust, a journey across France, rogue antique dealers, the shadowy world of the international manuscript market and a mystery to solve. Can Aurora and Cedric trust each other and learn to work as a team? Can they resist the developing pull of sexual attraction, are there things in their past which will prevent them finding happiness and professional fulfillment. Nuff said. If you loved the Da Vinci Code, you'll love this novel.
I really enjoyed this novel as I found the storyline around the manuscript intriguing running parallel with the love story between Cedric and Aurora. I loved the different characters and how I warmed to some and hated others in equal measure therefore clever how the Author provoked the reactions to the different characters.
I wanted to keep reading this novel both for the love story element but also to see what happened in regards to the manuscript and I wasn’t disappointed.
The added bonus was that Cedric did sound very handsome and I think I would feel very safe with him around!
I have also read Marie’s first novel Little Pink Taxi, which was fantastic and also had an element of mystery and intrigue and was so pleased that this was another wonderful novel. I’m very much looking forward to the next one.
This was a good book; kept me entertained but I had issues with two things: The fairy tale element and the iciness of the heroine. I actually was so hoping towards the end that because her name was Aurora and I felt her grandma had a fairy tale name (and someone else whose name escapes me) that there was really going to be something that had to do with a real fairy tale that we've read or watched in the movies. So I was disappointed when I got to the end and there wasn't.
The heroine deserved her name of the Black Queen or Icy Queen. She was just so cold and shut off emotionally that after awhile it really bothered me. I get that we have layers and one or more of those have to be broken down to allow someone in, but she had layers upon layers. Loved the hero and his persistence however.
Overall a good book and I would read more from this author.

Having read and loved Little Pink Taxi, I was very happy when this second Choc Lit book by Marie Laval was announced, and I'm even happier to say that it's just as good... or possibly even better. Mystery, adventure (who knew that studying illuminated manuscripts could be so dangerous?) and, of course, romance made this novel a delightful read for me. I also thought the little references to fairy tales were a nice touch, and I enjoyed the glimpses into Aurora's job as a palaeographer.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is quite a ripping adventure yarn, with a typical heroine, Aurora – low self esteem, bright and intelligent, a paleographer just trying to further her career in old manuscripts (working at the Institute in Manchester founded by her grandfather) having been asked to go to Paris to authenticate (or not) one just having come to light there. She has plenty of scars, both physical and emotional. Enter the journalist hero, Cedric – a typical bad boy, having had his own desperate childhood with an alcoholic, addict mother. Lots of villains abound but there are also plenty of happier aspects – Cedric is heavily involved in trying to help young people on the street (as he once was), and immigrants struggling to cross the sea from Libya. All in all, a pretty good read.
This is a very unusual read, a romance, a crime and a new, to me, subject. The subject is historical manuscripts and yes, I had heard about them but the way they have to be authenticated was new, this book touched on this in an interesting and informative way. It is the crux of the story, around which the crime and the romance revolves. The writing is excellent and I had no idea where the story was heading. The crime was woven so well that I found it impossible to guess the outcome. The romance again was deeply entrenched in the book that again it was not obvious as to the outcome. Cedric and Aurora were so real I felt as if I knew them. The descriptions of Paris were genuine and evocative. I really loved this book and hope that the author has another on the go.
Marie Laval just gets better and better. I loved this book. Palaeographer, Aurora Black, is thrown together with Cedric by the man who has hired her to validate an important historical manuscript prior to sale at auction. It is a job that could make or break her, is she up to it or has she just been asked because of her grandfather’s reputation. Is someone trying to make sure she doesn’t uncover the truth and is Cedric just a distraction too far. Marie weaves the plot beautifully and created a story which deftly negotiates twists and turns and will have you guessing until the end. The chemistry between the two main characters is obvious. Cedric was an easy hero for me to fall in love with and I was with them every step of the way. Thank you. Marie, another great book.
I loved this book and found it so difficult to put it down. An interesting story with an engrossing mystery, lies, deceit, history, some romance and twists and turns which kept me guessing until the end.
I loved the setting of the book - both in Paris and in Italy. I found I could empathise easily with Aurora and enjoyed the insight into the work of paleographer. I really liked how the characters developed throughout the book. I loved the surrounding cast of characters particularly Luigi and Simone and would love to visit their jazz club.
Fabulous - I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to the publisher ChocLit for providing me with an early copy in exchange of my honest review.
The author's previous book was a delightful lighthearted romance, this, her latest novel, is an absorbing romantic mystery dealing with more serious issues, all mixed in with plenty of humour. An up-to-date and satisfying read, thoroughly recommended.
Aurora has concentrated totally on her career leaving no time for a private life. When she's sent to Paris to authenticate an ancient book she meets charismatic Cédric who is the total opposite to her, there is an instant mutual dislike – or is there?
A fun chase around France and Italy with a bit of a gastronomy thrown in.
When buttoned-up Aurora Black goes to Paris to investigate the authenticity of an illustrated medieval manuscript, she is totally unprepared for the impact Cedric Castel will have on her life. As an investigative journalist, he is trying to track down art thieves and believes she might be involved too. When the two begin to work together to solve the crimes, they both face danger. A fascinating glimpse into Paris life, a city I have always longed to visit but never have. A magical fairy tale indeed!
Initially I disliked the two lead characters- the ice queen Aurora obsessed with ancient manuscripts and the seemingly playboy slash flirt Cedric. However as the story and characters unfold, both characters become amazing people. This is two stories in one - a possible love story and an exciting thriller involving crooks, dangerous Russians and monks! Thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely worth reading!
