The Fae Chronicles #6

Embracing Destiny

Rate this book
Part one of the finale. Too large of a page count to be one book. Keep in mind at the end of this book, you're at the middle of the storyline for one book that ended up being 1200 pages in print.

War has finally come to Faery.

Everything I thought I knew was wrong.

Truths have become lies, and they have all begun to unravel around us. I can no longer trust my instincts.

Ryder has changed, but so have I. We’re evolving, but into what? I’m not sure, but I do know that it isn’t what I wanted to become.

I don’t know if I will survive this war.

One of us is holding back, while the other continually moves forward toward the mages who endlessly slaughter the fae.

I think it’s me. I think I have to lose it all, to gain what is missing inside of me. How do you eradicate self, when self is what you’ve been fighting for?

Throw everything you think you know about the fae away. Nothing is sacred, and no one is safe from the monsters we’re about to become.

I love Hutchins. I do. That being said, I think the quality of her writing is going downhill. Embracing Destiny was hastily written, by her own admission. And there's a sequel, or rather, a part two coming. That's fine.

Here is the issue. And maybe it's just an issue for me personally, because I require more from my authors than just sex sex sex. There's a lot of it in here, which is fine I suppose. Except that it's not especially sexy. It's kind of rape-y, with a heavy dose is BDSM, which again, is fine if you're into that, and I've been known to be into it. I just couldn't connect to the scenes in any way, which made them unsexy. In fact, I had trouble connecting to the whole book, which has never been a problem for me with Hutchins' Fae series.

Here is one problem: she apparently does zero research for her characters. Yes, they're made up, but some of them are based on existing legends, and if you use some of the facts of those legends to flesh out your character, it gives your book real depth. Take Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs for example. If ones of them refers to a character of legend, you can look that character up and see that they've used some of the actual legend to give that character life. That's a mark of a great author.

Then there's the typos and repetitive word use. Flesh is used 61 times (although down from her all time high of 123 times), and pretty is used 54 times (also a reduction, but not enough). The thesaurus is free. Seriously. When you can make it a drinking game, it's too much. There are 47 typos that I personally caught. There could be more. And they were typos. The grammar was pretty good for the most part.

In a conversation, Hutchins told me she used 3 different word processors to edit her books. And therein lies her problem. An algorithm is no substitute for a sharp pair of eyes. They don't catch homonyms. Ever.

I will say this book was edited better than her last one by A LOT. But it's still not good enough.

This is getting tiresome, long and OTT. Too much sex and too little plot. (honestly - a few books ago, this story became 70% dirty talk and sex and the remaining 30 tried to put together some outrageous plot- wasn't this supposed to be a great fantasy about faeries?!)
Also, too many freaking "supernaturals" thrown together. I made my peace with the faeries and the demons.. but now we got every other monster of legends coming in and I'm like, no, just no.

I have a few complaints about this book, and this series as a whole. Sorry it's a long rant...there is a TL; DR at the bottom.

Complaint 1:

Apparently, if you don't read EVERY SINGLE BOOK in the Fae Chronicles universe, and these books are not listed as being Fae Chronicles - The books in Wicked Knights, The Elite Guards, and Playing with Monsters, you will find yourself lost. Amelia only lets her readers know about this in the blurb of THIS book, and it is only here that you find out that you need to read EVERY book in the universe and not just "The Fae Chronicles".

I thought I was a fan of the series, I have read just about every book, but I kind of stopped reading the "side "books around "The Winter Court" when I realized Amelia started substituting dirty talk and sex scenes with story and plotline. So, when I noticed that I was getting lost on obscure plot points that kept being brought up - Adam making off with a corpse being one of them, and characters were being brought in as if they have always been around, I had to literally open up books and do a search on character names and plot terms to figure it out.

I wonder how many readers made this discovery? How many readers stopped following the side stories and just waited around to read "The Fae Chronicles" and are woefully lost, not understanding that they needed to read the other books. Perhaps a companion novella or even a list of characters in the book would be helpful.

Complaint 2:

Characters we loved in 2014 and 2015 have become parodies of themselves in 2020. Ryder and Cyn, in the first four books had a life outside of each other, and were fairly well rounded. In an abstract vision in my mind, I see Ryder and Cyn in the first four books as being well-fleshed out characters in full color, now they are one dimensional. It's as if Amelia stopped writing about them as characters and just started writing them as props to forward sex scenes and conflict. Even the banter I loved in the past is gone. Also, characters we loved who are major secondaries have been given practically no time. Rystan is one of them. While the main characters of every side book are brought out front and center. All the heroines of the previous books are here as if they have always been around. There are obscure characters being trotted out and apparently, we are just dumbasses for not already knowing who they are. Inside jokes and plot points are the rule here.

I am so disappointed. I hate that I have to skim past pages and pages of tedious sex scenes to get to some plot which more often than not is contrived conflict. In this book all we have is Cyn trying to assert herself as a badass who won't be told to sit aside and play "The Queen" while Ryder spends the book barking at her to shed her humanity and do what he says. The only time they don't seem to fight is when they have sex - which is in most chapters and is pages long and filled with so much over the top dirty talk that it's cringy.

Amelia learned that the readers of her books enjoyed Ryder's dirty talk at Cyn. So, she figured that more is better. So now in every scene involving Ryder talking to Cyn (not including sad scenes) he is either threatening her sexually with dirty talk, or having sex with her and also dirty talking.

The reason why we loved it in the first couple of books is because there was sexual tension between Ryder and Cyn. The dirty talk amped up the tension. Sex wasn't introduced until the second book and it wasn't until halfway through. It wasn't every other chapter thing. Ryder and Cyn weren't just waiting around on each other to have sex or kick ass, but that is what is going on here.

I know this is the first half of the last part of the series, but that doesn't mean Ryder and Cyn have to be made to go through tedious tropes best left for the first book. This was weak sauce.

Whatever.

So, to sum up - I am tired of being lost because I didn't read three books out of the 15 books in this unadvertised universe. I am tired of actual plot, banter and dialogue being replaced with sex and cringy dirty talk, and I am tired of Cyn and Ryder and friends being distilled into one dimensional character.

Unfortunately, I have to go back and reread books I didn't really care for, or read books that I had skipped because I am lost to various plot points.

If you are following the series and have read the majority of the books, you kind of have to read this one. It ends on a major cliffy - yet another contrived conflict - Yup.

Oh, I almost forgot, this is a space between paragraphs book, so the page count is padded and it is annoying to read. I actually download the book and edit it for those paragraphs and resend it to my Kindle. I do pay for it on Amazon, but I edit it so I can actually read it. Why authors still do that I don't know, but it is a terrible formatting style.

2021 Second Read

Well, I admit that I liked this book better the second time around after reading all the previous books in order up to it. I think that because I hadn't read some of the previous books, and because I hadn't re-read the previous Fae Chronicles this book came off badly. I liked it much better this time.

The first 3 books of this series were so good. She should have just kept it at a trilogy and left all the goddess nonsense alone.

I did not like the story. I just reread the other books out of boredom and I admit I skimmed through the last book but still felt like I missed a lot of information. Maybe because I did not read all the other side books of this series but it just bothers me that I should have to read them to know what is going on in this series.

The pit part at the end made me give this book 2 stars and not 1. What the hell is going on with all the revelations from Ryder? Why was all of his character development thrown out of the window?
I’m just so disappointed with this.

The pit twist was the only thing that kept the story entertaining and I am going to read the final book in the series but come on, we all know that their luvvvvv is going to fix everything. All the destiny crap... Synthia should never forgive Ryder for what he did to her. Just leave the asshole.

I’m sooo torn! I want it with everything that I am because this is my favorite series ever but I don’t want it to end either. I know it will be epic and hot and just like with all the books, I will be on a roller coaster ride of emotions. These characters are alive to me and I reread the books several times a year so even though this is the final book to this series, it will never really, truly be over for me because every time I read them, I still laugh, cry, scream, and rant at all the places that made me fall in love with Syn and Ryder to begin with.

Embracing Destiny is the sixth book in The Fae Chronicles. Ryder and Synthia have overcome so much to survive the evil forces that are pushing against them. War is officially in their land, and even though they have taken every precaution, death and destruction are sure to threaten everything they love. Although they both still love each other unconditionally, changing is putting more strain on their relationship. The odds for their survival are getting smaller and smaller every day!

Told in dual POV, Embracing Destiny is another engaging read that will keep you glued to the page throughout every single solitary moment. Although this series continues to morph and grow, I will never grow tired of all things Ryder and Synthia. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of moments when I wanted to throw my Kindle across the floor, yet these two are meant to overcome. The passion and chemistry continue to grow, and Ms. Hutchins keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire read!

Overall, Embracing Destiny will appeal to any and all paranormal fans who love diving into a series. These books cannot be read as a stand-alone as each character plays a pivotal role in the full story arc. I am a huge Ryder and Synthia fan, and I will continue to enjoy every single moment spent with them!

Wow just Wow

Not sure who is hiding more secrets. Amelia you made me cry so hard that just wasn't right.

Hey I think I actually like Syn ripping out hearts. I can't believe Ryder put her where he did. It serves him right, I really hope he will have to work for it in the next book even when she does remember. What he did was just plain WRONG!

They lost some really strong characters and yes I cried like a baby. Bring on the next book even though I don't want it to end!

- I hope in the last book Synthia will find her dignity and self-esteem, but first of all her brain.
- I hope she'll become more powerful than Ryder and she will be laughing in his face when he will try to threaten her.
- I hope she finally gain respect, because right now I don't think many of the Fae (like for example Zahruk) respect her.
- I hope she will find self-respect and tell Ryder that she belongs to herself and nobody owns her anymore. And that his wife and Queen of the Horde died in the pit.
- I hope she will leave this sick monster and build her own kingdom, in which she will take anyone seeking refuge. She will be the most powerfull and fearless creature in Faery but she will also be fair ruler so her people will not only fear her but also love her.

Oh! That would be so amazing ending!!! But yeah, I know it's not possible ;-(

Amelia Hutchins write characters you love to hate who steal a piece of your heart by the end. The story lines are intriguing and keep you guessing what will happen next. All her books will make you laugh, cry, be angry and leave you wrung out by the end! For an epic read pick any book and welcome to connecting worlds. I hope you fall in love with Faery like I am.

What a ride!!!!!!!!

Hold on tight peeps this is one ride that is gonna have u screaming.when Amelia Hutchins said this was gonna be a hell of a finale book boy she was not lieing, everything up to this point that makes Ryder an syn story so captivating and just oh so good is pushed to the limits. These two have not had a easy relationship from dieing to being stolen at your own wedding it seems like those two can never catch a break with war literly at there door step it's not the only battle they will have to face, there relationship will be tested loved ones will be lossed and heartbreak is on the horizon for all ,syn and Ryder have literally walked threw hell and fought death to be with each other but is it enough ,there's secrets, lies ,sex and betrayal everything that makes this book a hang off your seat bite your nails can't wait to see what happens kind of story.but I will warn u it ends in a hell of a laugh so hard you so didn't see that coming cliffhanger hanger dAm it can't wait for the next half of it.

Epic! Insane! Could not put it down! What am I going to do while I wait for the next one? Definitely a roller coaster ride of emotion I wished I could get off, knowing it was impossible and I had to read through the pain and hopefully, maybe things would get atleast a little better. I'm sorry to say it broke my heart and hurt so bad I wanted to hurt my precious kindle. Battles and sex. Love and devastation. Pain on top of pain and an extra dose for the agonising wait we have a head of us waiting very impatiently for the conclusion. I love all the characters and I hate to see them in pain. But the journey will hopefully bring us to some kind of conclusion we can live with and move on to the next story. You will not want to miss it, even if you hate every minute of it it is necessary, exactly as the author intended. Life is hard and no one will be untouched by the pain it can cause when we love someone. When we let them in and give them a piece of us. Beautiful chaos at its finest!

Firstly from reading some of the other reviews it is Syn not Cyn. Yes there is a lot of sex and banter between our two main characters. They are a married couple who have been to hell and back together - they dont have to get along all the time or actually have deep meaningful dialogue (just like real life). I loved the story. I raged, cried and wanted to punch Ryder in the junk more times than I cared to admit. The secondary characters were still funny, enigmatic and we still love them. As it is only part one of the finale, the story was left on a cliffhanger which while making me anxious also filled me with excitement for what is to come. Fabulous work Amelia please keep up the good work.

Rating- 5 amazing stars
Heat- 5
Tropes- got to save the world, heroine coming into her own

Amelia Hutchins is hands down one of the premiere fantasy romance writers out there, and she proves that again with the latest installment in the Fae Chronicles.
description/

She obviously took the opportunity with Embracing Destiny to see how many times she could break and mend our hearts in one book, and it was glorious.
description/

Syn and Ryder are both willing to do anything to save their family and their world, but the stress is clearly taking a toll on their relationship. We watch them both stumble and make mistakes in Embracing Destiny, but we also see them come back together again and again.

The fact that the entire cast of characters makes appearances only made this book even better. If you are only reading the Destiny books and skipping the larger world (Elite Guards, Monsters, and Wicked Knights), then you are missing this rich tapestry of a family.

Nothing can be assumed in the Chronicles series. Who will live. Who will die. Who people really are. Even what is actually going on. As, Ryder would say, it’s a glorious mind-fuck.

WOW! Brilliant. This book right there is why this is one of my favourite authors, this book just exploded with action and drama with what is happing in the fae world as the war of the mages is upon them.

I am just gobsmacked with how this author's mind works, she sure knows how to write a epic finale to a series even though this is the first of the two books,to say this first book was phenomenal I just have no idea how the next book is going top this, but this is Amelia and i just know we are going to be in for a epic ride of our our lives. She out did herself on this book.Stat.

I must admit I was scared to read this book knowing i was in for a ride along with our favourite characters not knowing who will survive and who wouldn't,one minuet i was laughing along and wham the next I was bawling. There was so many jaw dropping moments and Ryder was such a dick a lot of the time but that is a alpha male for you.

OMG that ending is like Ryder WTF did you do.This story is going to pick you up and take you on one hell of a ride along with Syn and Ryder that will leave you breathless with all the twists and turns, heart felt moments, deception, death and destruction, but with plenty of hot steamy sex scenes, well just a whirlwind of a epic story.Be prepared to have your heart in your mouth all the damn way through, just no words how amazing this book is.BRILLIANT.

Oh my god, I just finished this book and I am overwhelmed with emotion. Amilia’s books succeed at evoking smiles, tears, emotions and, well, other sorts of reactions EVERY TIME.
This book absolutely destroyed me - the first part I was angry and confused, then happy, then gut-wrenchingly sad (I was reading in public and had to stop every one or two sentences to hold back the tears), then I was so mad again and in the end, I was left with all these feelings combined together, and my heart aches.
I am still angry at one particular character, grieving many, my heart aches for my favourite Horde brother, and I won’t even get started on my feelings for Synthia.
It sucks that everytime I finish one of Amelia’s books I hurt with a sense of loss because I am addicted to the stories she writes and everytime another book comes out I basically devour it in around a day, which leaves me feeling as if I didn’t savour the read, but I’m always itching for more.
I am so sad that the next book is also the last book in Synthia and Ryder’s story 💔 Yet still, I am dying to get my hands on it already!!!
To conclude - Ryder is a cold-hearted dick, who needs to be spanked, I love and adore him, but he needs to get his shit together and start to appreciate all that Synthia is - and she is the only f***ing goddess I would follow.
Now I’m gonna go cry..

There are not enough stars to rate Embracing Destiny! It deserves every star and more!

Embracing Destiny is a turbulent tidal wave of emotions. I laughed. I cried. I raged. I cried some more. I had moments where my jaw wouldnt leave the dang floor. And, then I cried some more. It is honestly the perfect start for the conclusion of Syn and Ryder.

I love how Hurchins, just said f$%# it, and went balls to the walls, and didnt stop. She kept the characters true to themselves, while evolving all at the same time. And she isnt easy on the formidable couple. But what's ever easy when your couple is facing a war head on.

Overall, this is an amazing book. I'm sad it's the beginning of the end for Ryder and Syn but I'll always be able to revisit the amazingness that is them.

I am in the book void after finishing Embracing Destiny, and I do not know when I will be able to crawl out. Amelia seriously out did herself with this one, and I am sitting here saying wtf just happened? There were so many twists that I did not see coming, and I still cannot believe it. And then that ending?!?! Huge cliff hanger that makes me wish the second part was coming out tomorrow. I laughed, cried, and screamed at different parts. I reread all the books beforehand so that everything would be fresh, and this did not disappoint. I cannot recommend this series enough! Thank you Amelia for giving me such an amazing break from reality!

Okay... Amelia Hutchins just "wrecked" (😉) my brain! TF kinda ending was that?! Totally cliffhangerish! Author Endnote: Part II Coming Very Soon. Not soon enough, I can tell you! Embracing Destiny - I don't even know how to use my words, my hands have forgotten how to type, my left eye keeps twitching... For those (nincompoops) people who haven't started this book (or the series for that matter... really?) there are few revelations I will spill, but know this, the direction we all thought Ryder and Syn's Fancy Fairytopian Line of Life Path was taking them - yeah - Palm Readers didn't even see the devil forks in the road.

Hutchins let her genius shine and her seriously warped imagination (LOVE) run wild in this sixth Fae installment. Did I mention the tower overfloweth with babies? Every shape, size, color, drooling, fire breathing, forked tail, icy exhaling little bean of swaddled goodness is there for readers to imaginary-rock. Gods and goddesses are sneaking about the Horde like it's a 24-hr McDonald's offering free fries. Syn still straddles both worlds (and the Horde King), death comes to loved ones, Ryder's daughter gets him to wear a tutu, lipstick, and hair glitter (not true - but funny to imagine...), in walks a stranger, new family, marital misadventures, and more D jokes than you can shake a stick at. Readers won't know what they should be feeling from one page to the next. If Embracing Destiny were a movie, it would be listed as an adrenaline-pumping Action, Sci-Fi, Dark Comedy Drama, with a touch of Family (okay, maybe a stretch... but there are a LOT of related people in the story), a War-torn full-throttle Fantasy dipped in apocalyptic Disaster, and finished with a sprinkle of untraditional Love Story.

*Note - Here is the link to a review I wrote for the first five books in the series - in case you haven't yet started The Fae Chronicles (which you will) - if you want the answers to life's most pressing questions - or you just want to read about a LOT of good looking people killing bad guys. https://whiskeywitbook-reviews.com/bo...

This book was not what I was expecting..but in a good way!

Amelia said that there would be deaths but I wasn't expecting some of them. One was spoiled so I wasn't as upset but some of the brothers really hit me hard. I know that Amelia has a big plan with some of those left. Other things I wasn't expecting were all the secrets between Syn and Ryder. It's like what more can they be hiding at this stage of their relationship...?!? Oh so much more than you know!

While this book didn't end on a cliffhanger, it for sure didn't end in any way I was expecting. I'm curious to see how Amelia ends this part of the story for Fae. Amelia said that she didn't intend for this book to be split up but was forced to so the print book could be bound by Amazon.

Once again Amelia never fails and she certainly didn't fail this time with embracing destiny ❤

I have never cried so much in a book.. my emotions were all over the place and everything I thought I knew about certain things were wrong and turned completely on there head.
Syn and ryder go through it and Ryder is back to being the a**hole we know.. but he so messed up this time and I can't wait for the next book to see how he fixes it.
