Rate this book
One man faces challenges as a pastor in China. His son has become a breakout phenom in the world of professional golf. The Chinese government is displeased with both, and their lives are in danger. Stephen Grant – a onetime Navy SEAL, former CIA operative and current pastor – has a history with the communist Chinese, while also claiming a pretty solid golf game. His unique experience and skills unexpectedly put him alongside old friends; at some of golf’s biggest tournaments as a caddy and bodyguard; and in the middle of an international struggle over Christian persecution, a mission of revenge, and a battle between good and evil.

I read all the Pastor Stephen Grant books, but I do have my favorites. Deep Rough is joining Murderer’s Row and Lionhearts among them.

I’m not sure what it is. I’m not a sporty person, but Ray Keating really has a way of showing love for a game. Maybe it’s the attention to details and the depth of research into it. Maybe I’m soothed by sports jargon—who knows?!—but I really, really liked Deep Rough and how the game of golf was almost a character or force in its own right.

The premise is that there is an exceptionally talented Chinese golfer despite a rocky history of golf in China. Although golfing is taking off in popularity now, golf was banned during the 1980s by the Communist Party of China as too bourgeois. In Deep Rough, a new Chinese leader harkens back to those days. (By the way, wow. This book really helped it hit home that the Tiananmen Square Massacre was only in 1989!!) The story then follows a team of American action-folks as they fight against corrupt Chinese officials, even as themes of Christian persecution shine through.

This is not a book with large insights into Chinese culture and history, but it was an enjoyable read. It did highlight how companionable competition can be, which is nice, and I always do enjoy the Christian elements as Keating presents them.

Again, one of my favorite.

Another Pastor Stephen Grant Wonderful Read

As usual, Ray Keating has written a successful novel that both informs and entertains. I always find myself learning so much on the subject of each novel, and this one didn't let me down.
Romance, action, humor, action, golf. Now I have to admit that I started to glaze over with all the golf descriptions, but anyone who follows golf or plays will enjoy the golf references.
Ray Keating is a favorite of mine, and I look forward to many more books to follow.

Often this far into a series I get tired of characters, but Keating keeps them interesting by having such different scenarios each story: baseball, wineries, comic-con, and now golf. The action and violence can be graphic, but the relationships between people had me tearing up this time around. There were even a few times that I chuckled aloud. The only thing I don't like is naming characters after readers, but I'm not the author, so I'll let that one go. Keep them coming, Ray!

Keating continues to deliver with the eleventh book of the Pastor Grant series. Ray takes on the issues of the day with great action fiction. With the backdrop of an up-and-coming Chinese star in professional golf, he tackles the persecution of the church in China with Pastor Grant in the middle of most of it. Again, good character development and story line with an economics lesson added to top it off.

Really enjoyed this one!

I’ve enjoyed all of the Pastor Stephen Grant books, but this was one of the best to date. I enjoy the characters and the believability of the plots. After a few shorter stories, I liked the longer length of this one, as it’s a great diversion when you want to relax with a good book.
