As Christmas approaches, reluctant psychic Billie Culpepper receives an unwelcome surprise in the form of an eviction notice. Her shock at being evicted is quickly replaced by surprise when her beau suggests they finally buy a house together. Billie agrees to go house hunting only to find that every home has history, and trying to find a house that doesn't have old ghosts proves tricky for someone who can see the dead. Detective Mockler faces a challenge of his own when he's put in charge of a newly formed cold case unit to clear the backlog of old homicides. He dives into the new job eagerly only to hit an unexpected snag that could prove troubling to both himself and his psychic girlfriend. When the search for a house proves futile, Billie stumbles across her dream home; a quaint fixer-upper with vintage charm and a lack of ghosts. But nothing is ever simple when it comes to the paranormal and the new home-owners find themselves under assault from a violent presence that can elude Billie's psychic abilities. Meanwhile, John Gantry, the occult expert/con man, faces his own terrifying ordeal when he learns that his family is coming to visit for the holidays.
Mr. McGregor please never stop writing the Spook Show books
As usual I loved this book just as much as the others. The only problem is I read through them to quickly. Can't find anything negative to say. It was fun to get to know Hannah and Connie a little better and a different side to Cordelia. This may be my favorite series of all time. Waiting for the next---
In Midwinter we see even more twists emerge from Billie’s family history. I cannot help but feel attached to little Tom Cleary as Billie is. I am happy the paranormal presence within the story was resolved with a positive outcome. I enjoyed the natural, spontaneous progression of Billie and Mockler’s relationship.
I liked seeing more of Gantry’s family. It was also comical to see Gantry squirm from piping up with just the wrong idea of a joke where his family was concerned. It was also delightful to see the change in Cordelia – I am sure dealing with her sisters, the house, and then being neither alive nor dead.
I am interested to see how all of the relationships progress from where they are now. Billie and Mockler who are now the proud owners and renovators of a house. Gantry and Cordelia and the strangeness with a dose of so much acceptance with that relationship. Not to mention Cordelia’s “humanity” returning while Gantry’s family visited the house on Lorca Street. I will say that it seems like Billie’s friends have taken a backseat in the last two books but especially this one. Honestly, it was not a bad thing in my opinion. Mockler’s appointment to the new cold case unit was an interesting twist, and I am curious as hell to see where that goes too.
I will continue to read this series as long as Tim decides to keep writing them – no matter how long it takes for an idea to strike. The spooky backstory about the identity and inspiration behind this novel would have been enough to send a chill down my spine! Tim, thank you for keeping this series going without it becoming boring – you never know what the restless spirits are going to do next.
The pace gets slowed just a bit on this one, but it's because McGregor unfolds the mystery over most of the novel. And damn, it just works.
I'm always shocked when an author can push out one novel after the next in a series at a brisk pace, and each one knocks it out of the park. This is the tenth book in the series, and it's only five years since the first one.
And still, like the others, this one grabs you immediately, and simply doesn't let go.
Tim McGregor - you do NOT disappoint! I purchased "The Boy in the Woods" and "Midwinter" and then realized it had been a long time since I read the first 7 books. So I embarked on a re-read of them all. Even the second time around they were smart and funny and heartbreaking and scary - all of the qualities of a great paranormal series. Coming to the last two, I just couldn't stop and I read them quickly. Hey - take your time with the next one. I might have to re-read the series AGAIN and I won't be sorry to do it!
I have so enjoyed this series. The latest book is no exception. It’s like catching up with my friends, and going along on the ride with them. Billie is one of my favorite female heroes. She has her head on straight, down to earth, and of course a few flaws. I really like how these characters are fleshed out so well. And Tom has my heart. I sincerely hope the author can find more stories for this series cuz they are really good. Note, I did follow a reader’s advice and read in the order of book 3 first, then 2, then 1. They flowed very well like that, and can’t imagine it any other way.
If you are a fan of paranormal mysteries then I highly recommend the Spookshow series. Book 10 and I am still enjoying the tales being told.
Billie and Mockler take the next step in their relationship, but as usual nothing is as straightforward as it could be. Sounds like real life, no? Gantry also has an unusual Christmas when his sister and niece visit for the holidays. The catch, they stay with him at Cordelia’s house.
Anyway, the plot was excellent as always, and the characters are fantastic. I just love this series, it’s so easy to read. Highly recommended.
I have enjoyed all 10 Spookshow books. The characters are fantastic and so is the suspense and thrill with each book. With that said, I absolutely loved Midwinter! Midwinter may be favorite yet (I may say that with each book though). I loved really getting to know Hannah and Connie better and seeing a different side to Gantry and Cordelia. I loved the history of Michael Cleary as well. I had heard the story before and enjoyed how it was incorporated into Billie's story. Such a fantastic well written ride! I can not wait for more!
The Spookshow series is my favorite and this book did not disappoint! I love the characters and can't wait for each new book to release. I loved the parallel stories intertwining and also the setting of this book around the holidays. What else can I say Mr. McGregor other than I can't wait for Spookshow 11! Thank you for another wonderful chapter in Billie's story.
What can one say about a series the randomly blunder into and fall in love with? It was unexpectedly breathtaking. The plots are never tired and the character development is remarkable. I was hooked since the first chapter of the first book and the series rarely relinquished my attention in the two weeks since. I only hope that I have not seen the last of Billie. Note to the Author: You have blown me away with your skill and I can't wait to read more of your works!
I just love this series and again I wasn't disappointed. Couldn't put it down. Now I can't wait for the next one. The story kept me wanting more. Fantastic book and series. I recommend them all.
I love the Spookshow books! Unfortunately they don't last long enough and now I'm on the countdown to the next story. Keep 'em coming McGregor and I'll keep reading! Maybe add something miraculous for our Tom, he deserves some happy. :)
You must read this series if you like a good ghost story.
Such a wonderful read! I never got board reading 1-10. Very sad Im through. I really hope Mr. McGregor keeps the series going. I feel like the characters are family almost. Thank you!!
I was sucked into the Spookshow world with the first line of the original book. Great characters, great writing. I'll be waiting for the next book, but in the meantime I'm going to check out his other books.
Favorite character; Gantry. In my mind I picture David Tenant (from Dr Who). I can't imagine any one else. The story flows from book to book, so I think it's better to read the books in order.
Wow, a lot of things become clear about Billie's family in this book. I couldn't put it down until I'd finished reading it. I do hope there will be more books.
I love this books, very engrossing with good development of the characters. I'd love to have the author keep'em coming, maybe flesh a few bits out more, for fun and to fill in a few every day blanks.
I so enjoy this series and this book was excellent. What a storyteller. This series is unique to other ghost stories. The story grabbed me and won’t let go.
