Matt Christopher is the writer young readers turn to when they're looking for fast-paced, action-packed sports novels. He is the best-selling author of more than one hundred sports books for young readers.
Matt Christopher is America's bestselling sports writer for children, with more than 100 books and sales approaching six million copies. In 1992, Matt Christopher talked about being a children's book author.
"I became interested in writing when I was 14, a freshman in high school. I was selling magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and Liberty, and I would read the stories, particularly the adventure and mystery stories, and think how wonderful it would be to be able to write stories and make a living at it. I also read detective, horror, aviation, and sports stories and decided I would try writing them myself.
Determined to sell, I wrote a detective story a week for 40 weeks, finding the time to marry, work, and play baseball and basketball before I sold my first story in 1941, "The Missing Finger Points," for $50 to Detective Story magazine.
After writing and selling children's sports stories to magazines, I decided to write a baseball book for children. I was living in Syracuse, New York at the time, working at General Electric. I spoke about my idea to the branch librarian. She was immediately interested and told me that they needed sports stories badly. So I came up with my first children's book, The Lucky Baseball Bat. I submitted it to Little, Brown, and the book was published in 1954.
I'm sure that playing sandlot baseball and then semiprofessional baseball with a Class C club in the Canadian-American League influenced my writing. I had my own personal experiences, and I saw how other players reacted to plays, to teammates' and fans' remarks and innuendoes, to managers' orders, etc. All these had a great influence on my writing. My love of the game helped a lot, too, of course.
Out of all the books I've written, my favorite is The Kid Who Only Hit Homers. It's a fantasy, but the main character in it could be real. There are a lot of boys who would love to play baseball but, for some reason, cannot. The only difference between a real-life boy and Sylvester Coddmyer III is the appearance of a character named George Baruth, whom only Sylvester can see and who helps Sylvester become a good ballplayer.
I've written many short stories and books for both children and adults, and find that writing for children is really my niche. Being the eldest of nine children (seven boys and two girls), I've lived through a lot of problems many children live through, and I find these problems excellent examples to include in my books.
Sports have made it possible for me to meet many people with all sorts of life stories, on and off the field, and these are grist for this writer's mill. I'm far beyond playing age now, but I manage to go to both kids' and adult games just to keep up with them, and keep them fresh in my mind.Very few things make me happier than receiving fan letters from boys and girls who write that they had never cared for reading until they started to read my books. That is just about the ultimate in writing for children. I would never trade it for another profession."
Matt Christopher died on September 27, 1997. His legacy is now being carried on by his sons, Duane and Dale Christopher.
Personal Response: I read the book ”On the Court with Lebron James” and it was really eye opening. I really enjoyed reading this book. The details were great and made the book more interesting to read. This book paints the perfect picture of how hard work will make your dream work.
Plot: Lebron James grew up in Akron, Ohio. Akron was known as a town full of crime. Lebron grew up with just his mom, Gloria. They were very poor, and homeless for the better part of Lebron's childhood. Lebron was a troublesome kid who hated school and homework. The Walker family then decided to take Lebron and Gloria in as one of their own. This way Lebron would be able to stay in the same school district and make some friends. As Lebron grew older everyone noticed his talent in basketball and football. In high school, Lebron wanted to play football in college, but with many basketball coaches contacting him about basketball he decided he’d have a better chance in basketball. And right he was, he was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the #1 overall pick of the 2003 NBA draft, at age 18! He won rookie of the year that year. He was with the Cavaliers for six years and then went to the Miami Heat for three years. He won three league MVP awards, two NBA Finals and two Finals MVPs.
Characterization: Lebron James was the main character. Lebron was the leader of whatever team he was on, because everyone looked up to him and his ability. Lebron was very determined, wise and had great knowledge for the game. Gloria, Lebron's mother, was very poor and could not afford to buy a house. She was very determined and hard working.
Setting:This book mostly took place in Akron, Ohio, where Lebron grew up. This was where he began his journey to becoming the best basketball player in the nation. Then when Lebron got drafted he had moved to Cleveland where he played with the Cavaliers. He played in Cleveland for six great years. In the summer of 2010 Lebron had moved to Miami where he signed with the Miami Heat.
Thematic Connection: The theme to this book was hard work made Lebron's dream come true. As a kid Lebron was a natural at playing basketball. As he got older he was encouraged by his peers to keep working, knowing that he could make it to the big time. That was just what he did. His determination was unmatched by anyone, there was not a day that goes by where he did not work on his game.
Recommendation:I would recommend this book to anyone boy or girl of any age who really enjoys basketball. It shows that people do not have to be rich to be good at sports. It just takes hard work and determination.

I just finished On the Court with LeBron James. This is a great biography about the basketball player LeBron James. As I read this book,I learned so much that I didn't know about LeBron James. For example, did you know that he had two high school basketball coaches? I liked how Matt Christopher, the author of the book, captured almost every single part of LeBron's life. Almost every basketball game he played was mention at least once in this book. What I think the author could have improved on while writing the book was that he could have interviewed LeBron a little bit more. However, the author did a amazing job on putting the events in order as accurately as possible. LeBron relates to me. We both love basketball and we both try our hardest, even when we face challenges. However, we are also very different. He is very tall and I am very short. He played football, and I haven't played football. This book has its cons, but overall it is a very good book.
The theme in this book is that when you think your at your lowest don't give up because LeBron was once homeless and lived in a bad part of Akron. His neighboors were basically his parents because his mom couldn't take care of him. He escaped from his life by playing basketball and then made it to the NBA.
I think that LeBron James Is one of the best Players to play the game of basketball and always will be. LeBron wasn’t just a good basketball player; He was a very loyal person, especially towards his mother, he was also a great leader, and was a very humbled person as well. When a player has all of these qualities it makes me like them even more because I don’t like ignorance. I think LeBron made a good choice when he left Cleveland to play for the Miami Heat. I respect him for his decision because he had to make one of two choices witch would both result in good and bad ways. I loved this book because now I know what his real story is and I don’t have to wonder how he became such a good basketball player.
Plot
LeBron James played for the Summit Lake hornets but only for a short time until he moved schools to meet his future teammates at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He won many state championships in his high school. He then became a star and a big target for news reporters. Because of all the talk of how good LeBron was, many professional teams wanted him before he went to college. He skipped college and went straight to the NBA. He played for the Cleveland Cavs for 7 years and then went to win a national championship with the Miami Heat. It took plenty of time to get used to playing with a new team but they got through it. With LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh all on the same team it was hard for LeBron because he wasn’t the only playmaker. He had to get used to having two other very talented players on his team. He quickly adjusted his game to be able to play as the “Big 3.” The Celtics were always a tough team for the Miami Heat but they put them away multiple times. After 2 years of being with the Heat LeBron got his first championship.
Characterization
LeBron grew up in a bad part of town where he saw many bad influences but he didn’t follow any of them. LeBron’s mother was a single mom and had many partners. LeBron played many sports. He was best at football when he was in grade school. A parent of another player noticed LeBron’s talent and understood his situation at home so he asked LeBron’s mother if he could be the guardian of LeBron until she figured stuff out and was back on a good path. She said yes. LeBron then got better and better in sports. He also saw his mother often. When he became a high school student he also became the best high school basketball player to play the game. He became even better and was drafted right out of high school to the Cleveland Cavilers. He became a star in the NBA at a young age as well. He played many years with Cleveland and came very close to taking championships. He then got “hungry” for a title so he then went to the Miami Heat. He played two years there and eventually got his dream of winning a championship.
Setting
There are multiple different setting in LeBron James. LeBron’s home town was a very bad place. His block got “shot up” almost every week. LeBron moved to central Michigan to play high school basketball. There he became the best player to go through the system and setting a record of winning state championships all 4 years he played. After high school he went to Cleveland to play for the Cavs. There he broke many records at a young age and lead the Cavs to many playoffs. He took them to the finals once but did not succeed. After he hadn’t won any championships he played for the Miami Heat. There he played for two years and continued to break records. The second year he won his first championship.
Recommendation
I would recommend this book to teenage boys with the range of 12-18 years of age because 12-18 are the years where basketball becomes a life style not just a game. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone over 18 and under twelve because the reading level will either be too high or too low.
I selected this book because i love basketball and lebron james is one of the basketball legacies. The thing that impressed me in the book was how hard lebron james worked to get good at basketball even though he lived in poverty(for most his life). This made me sad for him because regularlly people would quit / give up but he kept on taking steps foward, not backing off his career.LeBron James is kind, good at basketball, and has tons of fans.A lesson learned would probably be Don't give up on life. LeBron James hard work and determination brought him this far in basketball.A writing style would be flash back in "On the court with lebron james" since it tells about his past a lot.An example of why not to give uo would be because in the story it said,"I'm not going to cry.The best thing for me is to wake up the next morning."(Matt 36). basketball and hope. The two big ideas of this book along with LeBron James.
This book is one of the best books I have ever read. I think one of the reasons why I liked it so much is because not only do I love playing basketball, but I love watching Lebron James play basketball. This book is about Lebron's childhood growing up in Akron, Ohio. Lebron didn't have such a good life growing up and this fantastic biography will let you know how bad it was. This book also talked about Lebron skipping college and going straight to the pros. Out of 5 stars, I would rate this biography a 4.9 out of 5 stars.
My name is Kweli and my book is called “On The Court With LeBron James”. Now by the title you could pretty much predict that this book is about LeBron James obviously, and correct that's what its about. This book was written by the author Named by Matt Christopher being this book as The #1 Sports Series for KIds, by that you can pretty much tell that he writes a lot of sports books. Matt Frederick Christopher was an American writer of children's books. He wrote more than 100 novels and 300 short stories, mainly featuring sports! To give you a brief summary about this book, this book is about the long journey, the bumpy roads and the ups and downs LeBron had to live and go through starting as a child and working his way into becoming one of basketballs brightest stars, but the most important thing is where it all started Akron , Ohio. Now the genre this book falls under is Biography because you are getting information about an individual and writing a book strictly about that person and how there life was from start to now. Now you're wondering “Why, why this book” the reason I picked this book to read and type a book report about is because LeBron is one of my favorite basketball players of all time and getting to know more about his child life, and what it took to get to what position he is at now, such as the mind set the attitude , and the grind and being able to see that as a kids still now that is just a huge motivation to try and chase my dreams as an NBA basketball player.
Some major characters that had motivated to keep going is is one his mother Gloria James she was a major factor in his life as in motivation and pep talks, LeBron considered his mom as his number one fan and has kept that into his mind his whole basketball career, Gloria James made huge sacrifices in order for LeBron to live a better life, Gloria and LeBron have moved to over 7 times LeBron James was never in a stable home to sleep in and his mother always told him to never get too comfortable because they were always on a move to a new place to stay. LeBron never met his father so his mom had to play both roles and the put more weight on her shoulders. His teammates were like his brothers and no one else on the court was LeBron's friend and some conflict was during the NBA championship in 2007 LeBron playing for the Miami Heat with a great regular season record and blasted through the playoffs with breeze, until the championship came. A Lot of miscommunication between Lebron and his teammates causing a lost of a 7 game championship game placing LeBron a Champion without a Championship. This is putting LeBron in a mental state to where he is so angry and full of hate and he goes back to Akron. I see this theme as a you need to lose one to win some because this is the first time LeBron has been to the championship and a full off season of hard work blood, sweat, and tears all just to throw a way was one of the hardest things for leBron to take in at the moment for a first time experience. And back to what i was saying this story fits perfect for the genre Biography because this is a story about on person and how they are living their life through the ups and downs during his life and is able to make a book out of it.
My detailed opinion about this book is that i love it because now i have a big perspective on LeBron and how he plays and the people who influenced him to keep playing basketball. And i actually take note into that and use that and watch what attitude and aggression that he plays with showing that he has experienced as a child. And as basketball being one of my favorite sports I can play with the same attitude as LeBron to improve my game. And i would recommend this book because this shows that you can make from having nothing into having something because the way LeBron lived he had nothing and now is rising to the stars as one of the best basketball players in the world.
LeBron Raymone James born December 30, 1984 in Akron, Ohio as a young child lebron grew up around a lot of violence. As a kind he found a interest in sports in the fourth grade lebron moved in with his basketball coach so he could have a better life because his mother was never stable which made life harder on him.

After a couple of years lebron went to the miami heat to join superstar Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh to form the NBA’s big three. While playing for the heat lebron won his first ever NBA championship ring. While playing for the heat lebron left that team with two championships.

Even before the first official matches, signed a sponsorship agreement with Nike , worth $ 90 million. In the first season won the rookie year , and in the next three years he was elected to the All-NBA and All-Stars teams.

Salvatore Tisone Book Review The title of my book is on the court with Lebron James by Matt Christopher. This book is about the modern day NBA star Lebron James. The author did a great job of describing the outrageous life of Lebron, especially with all his statistics. It’s crazy; Lebron James is with only a handful of players to get drafted out of high school. Even Michael Jordan didn’t get drafted out of high school! Lebron James last milestone was scoring 20,000 points. His next is scoring 30,000 points. There are only five players in that club. You will be amazed of how he got to be the king of modern day basketball. This book has some humor, but is mostly informational. When you read this book you will understand and appreciate how much a freak of nature Lebron really is. This book is really written well and is not that relatable to most people because he had a very bizarre life. Bouncing around to houses in a tough neighborhood. Plus, he was 6 foot 3 in 7th grade! My favorite part of the story is when Lebron is growing up. It is very interesting how his mother and step father struggled to raise him but still got it done. I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially basketball fans.
LeBron James is a famous NBA player. He grew up in Akron, Ohio. Akron was known for it's criminal activity. LeBron's mom, Gloria, struggled to get money for her child. LeBron had a very troublesome childhood. He didn't pay enough attention to school and homework. Gloria realized that she couldn't properly provide for her son. To get LeBron's life on track she let a family, the Walkers, take LeBron in. They taught LeBron discipline. They also taught him how to play basketball.
LeBron plays in the NBA. He has his own basketball camps, for college and high school. He is one of the world's most influential basketball players. He has been featured in many books and television shows.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. This book includes lots of statistics. I would recommend this book to male teens. They will like to learn about the back story of such a great NBA player. This book includes lots of information I didn't know before I read it. The book has lots of good information. If you love basketball you will love this book.
Matt Christopher. "On the court with Lebron James"
The book is about Lebron James a basketball player. One of the most popular basketball players ever. This book is for people who admire the game of basketball or admires Lebron.
The story tells bout how Lebron grew up in the work of basketball and how he made it through high school. The book starts out by telling his child hood. For example: when he was 6 years he tried out for the team and made it. It tells how he admired Michael Jordan, larry bird, Ervin Johnson. He wanted to be like em up when he grew up. He's played the game since he was 6. Every since he was 6 he practiced and practiced everyday so he could get better at the game so he could be like Michael and new when he older. He dream was to go to the Nba and become a legend.. To this day his dream has came true. He is one of the best players in the Nba right now.
I am not particularly a fan of Lebron James for the simple fact that he plays for the Miami Heat and I am a Boston Celtics fan. But after reading this biography I was impressed on his journey of becoming one of the most known basketball players in the national basketball association. Lebron played basketball for four years on his high school team in Ohio. Because he was so talented and absolutely dominated the court the National Basketball Association could not wait for him to play in college and recruited him right out of high school. This is where he started playing for Cleveland Ohio and made his mark. The biography takes you through his high school life until his currents in the NBA and what he has accomplished. He was been featured on commercials, making millions of dollars, and playing his favorite game; basketball. Children would really enjoy reading this book.
In the book Lebron James it explains his life. It explains his childhood where he had many struggles but he still fought through them and he became and great basketball player. After his childhood they explain how high school career as a basketball player where he just blasted off and became one of the best prospects in America. In the end they explained how lebron skipped college and went straight into the NBA and got drafted into the cavs and was good right away on the NBA. He broke many records in his first 2 seasons that people were saying he was the next Michael Jordan. In my opinion Lebron is one of the best basketball to ever play but I don't think he is the next Jordan. I would recommend this book to people who like sports and want to know more about lebron James
This biography explores the life of the one of the greatest basketball players of modern times, LeBron James. The beginning of the book explaining LeBron’s childhood in inner-city Akron was interesting but second half of the book read like a play-by-play of basketball games, with descriptions of plays and statistics. While hardcore sports enthusiasts will enjoy this type of writing style, it was hard for me to follow. However, the book is perfect for reluctant readers who are also basketball lovers because the writing style is more like an ESPN commentary than other types of non-fiction.
this book is about Lebron James and where he was born and raised. i like this book because i am a fan of Lebron James and i just learned a lot about how he was introduced to sports and i am an athlete myself. Lebron been through a lot of hardships to get in the position he is in today and i believe that hard works pays off. i really like this book because it inspires me to work hard for what i want.
This book is about the great Lebron James. If you like basketball then this is the right book for you! This is a biograghy about him and it tells all about his life. Did you know that he was poor when he was young? And did you know that his Grandma died on christmas but his parents didn't tell him? If you want to figure out more than pick up this book and read!!!!!!
This book tells the background of Lebron James of how he became to be a NBA champion. It also tells how hard and dedicated he had to be to reach his dream. He started out in Cleveland and came straight out of high school to be drafted number 1 in the overall draft. Then 7 years later he went on to win his NBA championship in Miami after being there 2 years.
I liked it a lot because it has to do with my favorite sport, and a player that I am really familiar with. I learned a lot about him, I found out things that I didnt know about him so that made it more interesting.
amazing book! i learned so much that i didnt know about lebron, his high school team, the cavs, and the heat that i didnt know! i am a lebron fan and a heat fan so i really enjoyed this book much more than say a celtics fan or a pacers fan would! but overall a phenomenal book!
