Edifying and informative, this carefully researched gem of a book was an insightful treat to read. I learned so much about the value and remarkable healing aspects of Gregorian chant; it is an absolutely fascinating music genre I want to spend more time researching and listening to. Additionally, I appreciated the author's unapologetic Christian emphasis regarding this genre and what it means for those singing it and those listening. I highly recommend.
I'm afraid this reads like a loosely compiled term paper where the student didn't make an outline and then had to repeat and rephrase to make the word count. I could tell the author had good intentions, but this little book rode uncomfortably between Gift Shop Book and Internet Scholarship.
The actual music is much, much better, in my view.
got this for $1 at a used bookstore because i thought it would be funny to own LMAO but i read it anyways. kinda reads more like someone's senior thesis project than a cohesive book. want to read other sources about gregorian chant for something more in-depth/well-constructed (also less blatantly pro-xtian oop!!). still glad i got it for the bit though
Chant is a quick fundamental summary of Gregorian Chants as both a type of music and a religious practice. Not bad for a short read, especially if you enjoy that type of music.
Having found this book by accident, requesting it with a group of CDs from my local library, I decided to read a few pages of it before returning the book. I'm very glad I did!
