The name Poe brings to mind images of murderers and madmen, premature burials, and mysterious women who return from the dead. His works have been in print since 1827 and include such literary classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This versatile writer’s oeuvre includes short stories, poetry, a novel, a textbook, a book of scientific theory, and hundreds of essays and book reviews. He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Poe’s reputation today rests primarily on his tales of terror as well as on his haunting lyric poetry.

Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.

The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

I didn’t realize Poe also wrote about the philosophy of art, and I am grateful to this thin volume for introducing me to his ideas. It was quite an experience to read his poetry and then be exposed to his thoughts about the art: his relentless search for aestheticism and his attempt to explain the relationship between beauty and sadness.

In an essay called “Marginalia,” he writes, “There is, however, a class of fancies, of exquisite delicacy, which are not thoughts, and to which, as yet, I have found it absolutely impossible to adapt language.” He goes on to muse about this idea of “fancies” in the form of words that come from our souls and provide a sort of ultimate mental ecstasy, and says that if he ever is able to express this idea, “the world will be compelled to acknowledge that, at last, I have done an original thing.”

For me, this is only a first step into his philosophies, which I think will lead to further reading of his poetry and prose. He even inspired me to write a few lines of verse, which I haven’t done in a long time: https://kathleenconstantine.com/2018/...

A collection of poems that are extremely incredible, well written and highly philosophical. I loved every single one of the poems; but my favorite one was ''The Spirit of the Death''. Makes you ponder...but realize of your thoughts and how they'll go along with you for a lifetime.

Edgar Allan Poe is simply amazing! He never fails to take my breath away with his beautiful writing and rhymes. The poem "Annabelle Lee" will always and forever remain my favorite!

It was interesting to read some of Poe’s older and most famous works. I had only read the Raven before and checked this out of the library to familiarize myself with Poe further. Out of the poets I’ve studied Poe was surprisingly one of my favorite. He had an amazing sense of rhythm, and painted a beautiful picture (I use “beautiful” in regard to quality, sometimes the images he uses are quite morose) with his words. Quite an enjoyable read.

I am not a big poetry person. I have a hard time following it. I find it too flowery and distracting with the tempos. I read this merely for the one poem in it - what I was named after - The Raven.

That being said, I read this aloud to my daughter, and she did enjoy it. Likely for the same reasons that I did not. At her age, the flowery and the sing songy ness is enjoyable.

This book describes the futility and the darkness of our thoughts. And how dangerous they can be in our isolation from the society. Apart from the ponders of love and how marvelous it can be. The poems that exist in this world are just well written thoughts and ponders.

“Quoth the raven: NEVERMORE!” (Poe, 1845) Reading Edgar’s poems is a delight…! Discovering others’ insights about his literature is amusing…! Edgar Alan Poe, John Dee, and Dante are the trilogy pillars of this genre…!
