In 1954 The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsored a Sunday evening radio service that was broadcast from Temple Square in Salt Lake City. A captivating thirty-part lecture series by Hugh Nibley, under the general theme “Time Vindicates the Prophets,” was featured from March 7 through October 17. Although recorded in 1954, the messages delivered in this broadcast are as interesting and relevant today as they were then, and they represent the characteristic Nibley style so many have come to appreciate. This extraordinary collection can be appropriately called “vintage Nibley.” Material in these broadcasts was eventually the basis for Hugh Nibley’s book The World and the Prophets. Hugh Winder Nibley was one of Mormonism's most celebrated scholars. Nibley is notable for his extensive research and publication on ancient languages and culture, his vigorous defense of doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and for frankly discussing what he saw as the shortcomings of the LDS people and culture.
A prolific author and professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, he was fluent in over ten languages, including Classical Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Egyptian, Coptic, Arabic, German, French, English, and Spanish languages. He also studied Dutch and Russian during World War II.
In addition to his efforts as a scholar, Nibley was well known for writings and lectures on LDS scripture and doctrinal topics, many of which were published in LDS Church magazines. His book “An Approach to the Book of Mormon” was used as a lesson manual for the LDS Church in 1957.
Worthwhile listening for any faithful Latter-day Saint with an academic bent. No one gave better lectures than Nibley. Each of these thirty lectures is outstanding, but the last one is perhaps the most touching testimony of the atonement that I ever heard from Nibley, or almost anyone else.
Phenomenal series of lectures by Hugh Nibley. Well worth a listen for any Latter-day Saint and all inquisitive Christians.
"Between March 7th and October 17th in 1954, Hugh Nibley delivered a series of 30 weekly lectures on KSL Radio that were also published as pamphlets. The series called “Time Vindicates the Prophets” was given in answer to those who were challenging the right of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to call themselves Christians."
