Forced to relinquish her late aunt's estate, proud, penniless Alissa Morgan journeys to Bath. But if rumors of a notorious highwayman test the courage of an unescorted lady, so does one of Alissa's fellow passengers: the frantic mother who thrusts an infant into Alissa's arms, then flees the coach! If a handsome stranger didn't choose that moment to come to her aid, Alissa honestly didn't know what she would do. Yet if the truth be told, Hugh Sebastian appears quite at ease in the role of Alissa's "husband." Then Alissa discovers that he has in his possession the missing necklace that the masked bandit seeks: the fabled St. Edmonds diamonds...
Setting out to return the baby -- and the necklace -- to their respective owners, Alissa comes to cherish Hugh's warmth and his tender embrace. Until Hugh himself falls beneath suspicion...and their charade of marriage falls to naught. Now, with only her heart to guide her, Alissa must discover whether love is an illusion -- or a treasure more precious than the most priceless of jewels....
This was the first romance novel I ever read, chosen as I was shelving library books in like 2002. It's a regency-style and is mostly about a convoluted heist-gone-wrong, with a bit of romance thrown in at the end. Sweet and silly.
During a trip to Bath, penniless Alissa Morgan finds herself unexpectedly dealing with an abandoned infant, a handsome fellow traveler who possesses a fabled diamond necklace, and a notorious masked highwayman.
A stolen baby, missing jewels, a highwayman, and a charade with a most attractive man. That is Alissa Morgan's tale. It is a light read, but a bit too obvious. There's no mystery about the abandoned baby or the jewels.
