Norman Nicholson: Collected Poems

Rate this book
Since Norman Nicholson's death in 1987, his work has been represented only by a slender volume of Selected Poems. Readers who know him through that alone may be surprised by what his Collected Poems reveals of the true range of his output, as well as by the strength of its Christian element. All Nicholson's writing drew its nourishment from close observation of the part of Cumbria where he lived, and of which he was the most devoted, accurate and unsentimental describer and chronicler. In his introduction to this book, Neil Curry - a friend of Nicholson and a poet himself - discusses the nature of Nicholson's 'parochialism' and its paradoxical universality, demonstrating just what was meant when his Times obituarist called him 'the most gifted Christian poet of the century'.
The full texts of Nicholson's five major volumes printed here together with many poems which have never before appeared in book form, substantiate that claim.

Such a fine poet. Started as a fine poet, then grew and grew as he aged, and his last collection is wonderful.
