Each spread in this dramatically oversized book displays 30 or more different animals in thought-provoking thematic groupings: Large and Small, Hot Weather, Cold Weather, Feathered, Horned, Spots and Stripes, Friends of Mankind, and so forth. The illustrations are robust, graphic prints that will catch the eye--and the large selection of over 350 different species will make absorbing reading. Includes four pages of informational notes.
This is a whopper of a book. At 17.8 inches tall and 12.4 inches wide, it’s perfect to open up on a cozy carpet. Each page is classified in a unique way, such as “Underground,” “Black and White,” and “Spots and Stripes.” And for kids (and adults) who enjoy searches, try to find the chameleon on each spread. -- Karina Glaser
This is undoubtedly one of the tallest books that I have ever read, standing 18 inches tall! And its pages are full of beautiful coloured paintings of animals of all shapes and sizes by the French artist Joëlle Jolivet. There are almost 200 of them all categorised within the the different groups that they belong. eg 'Horned', 'Black and White', 'Feathered', 'On the Seabed' et al.
The paintings are truly magnificent and are accompanied by brief notes on each that are under the heading 'Secrets of the Animals'. The Aardvark for instance has an informative note that tells us that his long snout and sticky tongue are made for catching termites while we learn the Zebo is a species of domesticated ox that lives in Asia and India and that the hump on its back contains a reserve of fat."
I didn't know that the Barn Owl is also known as 'The White Lady" (neither did my daughter who has one living in her orchard!), or that the Beluga or White Whale, living mainly in the Arctic, was once nicknamed "the canary of the seas" because of its song.
Another interesting fact is that the Civet, a small mammal that looks like a cat, marks its territory with a foul smelling liquid, which is apparently also used in the making of perfume - ugh! And also interesting is that it is not know what the Narwhal Whale's horn, which is actually a long tooth, is used for.
On page 17 in the section 'In the Trees', there is a picture of the Slender Loris that sleeps by day and hunts by night and, like its cousin the Slow Loris, it creeps up very slowly on its prey; no wonder they are cousins. However, although the Slow Loris, which features on the 'At Night' page, while moving very slowly and deliberately, does pounce on its prey suddenly, obviously speeding up when needed!
The illustrations are worth looking at again and again and the knowledge to be gleaned from the notes at the end is extensive - an excellent large book that is difficult to shelve in one's collection!
"Zoo-ology" is one of those books that children and their parents will always treasure. For over the last decade, this book with the orange cover has been my go-to gift for any of my family or friends who has welcomed a new baby into the world. I must have purchased "Zoo-ology" at least a dozen times over the years and have heard only good things from my recipients about this book!!!
There's an old saying: "A picture is worth 1,000 words." Joëlle Jolivet has batted a thousand with her amazing illustrations and some brief information in the back of her book about each animal. "Zoo-ology" also transcends the language barrier by teaching children about animals in different languages. I've also mailed this book to places like Spain, Switzerland and Romania--where moms and dads can translate each animal's name into their native language. What a gift that is!
Thank you and merci to Joëlle Jolivet for this amazing book. "Zoo-ology" is one of those rare books that teaches and shows children about animals as well as appreciate them as part of our world. I'm looking forward to finding (and buying) more of her books down the road!
I liked this book as a kid, when it was bigger than me. I was repelled by it at first, because I didn’t know what “zoo-ology” meant, but when I learned than it was the study of animals, this book was okay. The pictures were great, and I learned about lots of new animals from them. I would pour over every detail of the animal pictures, learning new stuff. It was pretty cool.
Zoo-ology by Joelle Jolivet is an awesome picture book about animals. Children can examine this book for hours and continue to be fascinated with all the interesting creatures and their colors and how they are connected. This is an oversized book, and the spread of each double-page depicts a beautiful and breathtaking mosaic of animals, which Jolivet links by a certain trait. For example, there are the animals that live in “Hot” places and in “Cold.” There are those that are “Feathered” and those that are “Horned.” Then there are those that live “In the trees” or “Underground.” Jolivet also groups animals under “Black and white” and “Spots and stripes.” The skilled use of line and color make this book special. The book illustrates thousands of animals, from the biggest to the smallest, and each animal has its name printed in very small Roman font near the animal. The color used as the background on each page has an earthy, grainy texture, which really enlivens the amazing tones and hues used to illustrate the animals. The pages have a gloss and shine that also add to the totality of this terrific book.
This was an awesome book of well drawn, albeit cartoon-ish, animals all broken down into a variety of themes. Science and animals lovers will be sure to be enthralled by this work. It's not quite as instructive as the Life-Size series, although the last pages have a bit of insight about each animal featured. There are *almost no repeats, which was quite a feat given the number of themes covered. A total winner.
This book is simply awesome...so awesome, in fact, that I have to purchase a second one as our first copy has been flipped through, carried around, looked at, studied intensely, displayed for all who enter our home, and loved by two little girls...to death.
Visu laiku mīļākā bilžu grāmata maniem bērniem. Dzīvnieku zīmējumi sakārtoti tematiski, piemēram, sīki un milzīgi, melnbalti, punktoti un strīpaini. Lieliska dāvana, ko atveda draudzene no Francijas.
