Another one bites the dust! This was a fun quick read, as I continue my long-awaited re-read of the Christian Heritage Series. I'd forgotten a lot of the particulars in this book, but that wasn't entirely a bad thing. Still certain memories of certain scenes came bubbling up as I read and you know? Josiah is a pretty fantastic protagonist, just saying. This book showed him grow up even further, spending the majority of his time away from his family in the far-away Salem Town by the sea. Josiah's love for the sea is strong, and that love is what motivates him to learn to read...with the help of one fine Joseph Putnam of course! I'd forgotten how awesome Joseph Putnam was, a man who cares what a boy has to say...and actually listens. There are some great moments with Josiah and his father...and Josiah grows so much in this book, truly becoming even more of a man (even though he's barely eleven). Again, solid mature themes presented in a children's book and you know what...? This book was encouraging to my soul, being reminded to never feel afraid to run to God for His help, no matter the trouble we are in. We ought rely more on God and trust in Him for our true support. Let us remember that, no matter what storms of life surround.

Josiah Hutchinson is sent to school in town, but what he really wants is to be a sailor... a CAPTAIN! There is one problem - Simon, a bully who tries to get Josiah into trouble. Josiah made a mistake and Simon saw him. Not wanting any trouble,Josiah makes a deal with this boy. He tries to convince himself that it's OK, but something (or Someone!) tells him it's not.

In the meantime Hope, Josiah's sister, is accused for stealing a gold chain. Josiah knows she is innocent, but can he prove it?

This story takes place in the 1690s. Extremely interesting and will keep you glued to the book.

Very interesting story...at the end of Book 1 in the Christian heritage series, Josiah's father decides to send him to Salem Town for schooling. This books begins with Josiah getting ready to leave home to stay with Phillip English, a ship owner. It's a mystery what is happening to things owned by Mr. English.
