The first half is an interesting look at and history of the Civil War through Jamie’s eyes. The second half follows Jamie back to his valley pursued by an army of enemies. A dramatic showdown and a shocking ending finishes the book and will have readers racing to find the next book in the series.
Would have been a 4 star book but Johnstone filled in with too much history of the Civil War. Not just as experienced by Jaime, but plain history, some actual, some fictionalized. Military screwups, personality conflicts between generals, both sides. That took up almost half of the book.
More blood feuds between Mac Callister's old enemies and Jaime take up a lot of the action. Cameo appearance by a young Smoke Jensen, the subject of another Johnstone series.
I have read many of a book, many not included on my list, and I will say the writer is a great writer; but he could have allowed the main character and his wife peace from hate and lived the rest of their life out together. I am finished reading his work.
Excellent story. I liked how it tied the MacAllisters in with characters from some of the other Johnstone series'. Mr. Johnstone is a consumate storyteller.
I am always amazed by the scope and span of the MacCallister books. This family is tremendous, what they go through is heartbreaking, and what they still have to face is daunting. I need to start the next book now!
I love all of WWJ books but I think the Eagle series is one of the best I have read so far. I love the family setting. Full of lovable characters and action packed.
I like a good western. This crossover into a history series not so much. Here is a story of the Civil War. Not what I was looking for. I'm done with this series.
I enjoyed this story and the concentration to detail and references to historical was very well done. I am just always taken aback by super-hero type characters, and while a Civil War/Wild West tale, Jamie Ian could just have easily been named James Bourne. Good read though.
Another great western series by Johnstone. This one follows the adventures of a family for generations as they help build the American frontier. Recommended
