Good detailed intellectual history of the development of the discipline, the main schools of thought, and key theoretical differences between the various camps.
“Modern Macroeconomics: Its Origins, Development and Current State” is a remarkable journey through the evolution of modern economics. As someone who has recently found enlightenment in the complex world of economics, this book resonated with me deeply.
The authors, Brian Snowdon and Howard R. Vane, have meticulously traced the history of modern economics, providing a comprehensive overview of its various developmental stages. They have skillfully dissected the effects of economic cycles, shedding light on what proves to be effective and what turns out to be ineffectual.
The book distinguishes seven different schools of macroeconomic thought: orthodox Keynesianism, orthodox monetarism, the New Classical School, real business cycle theory, new Keynesianism, Post Keynesianism, and the Austrian School. This broad coverage provides a holistic understanding of the field, making it an invaluable resource for both novices and seasoned economists.
What I found particularly compelling was the book’s exploration of the efficacy of government intervention in the economy. The authors present a balanced view, acknowledging the merits of both interventionist and free-market perspectives. This nuanced approach fosters a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play in macroeconomics.
Moreover, the book includes interviews with leading representatives of each school of thought, offering unique insights into their perspectives. This feature adds a personal touch, making the content more engaging and relatable.
In conclusion, “Modern Macroeconomics: Its Origins, Development and Current State” is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the intricacies of modern economics. It’s not just a book; it’s a roadmap to the complex landscape of macroeconomic thought, guiding readers through its twists and turns with clarity and precision. Whether you’re a student, a professional economist, or simply a curious reader, this book is a valuable addition to your library.
Are economists technological morons? Is money more important than natural resources & technology? This book mentions GDP but not the word 'gross', so readers must know what GDP is already. NDP & Net Domestic Product do not qualify as relevant to macroeconomics apparently.
The word 'planned' is used 10 times but never as 'planned obsolescence'. Planned obsolescence is the depreciation consumer durables which must be replaced thereby increasing GDP which is the flow of money. The word 'money' is used 600 times but they never suggest mandatory accounting in the schools. Economists love money too much!
If I I rated this book o the insights I thought it gave me into the 2008, .com, and 1982 recessions, it would get two stars. The schools of thought are not often logically exclusive, so one may give a better picture of one period in history while failing a decade later. What is missing from this book are case studies of disagreements wrt specific historical events.
However, as an explanation of what schools of thought are out there and how academic macroeconomists think, it was revealing. For example, this book gives sufficient context to understand popular quotes from Keynes, Milton, or Hayek—, eg, “In the long run, we are all dead.”
It is a unique book, which not only tells the story of development of Macroeconomics since its origin after second word war, but is also a reasonably good introduction to macroeconomics in general. Of course, the level of sophistication is not very high, yet it succeeds in what it aims to achieve. Beautifully written prose, clear exposition, well explained concepts and interconnections make the book valuable. End of chapters interviews with famous macro-economist are interesting, and insightful. A must read for every serious person interested in economics!
Best book to organise and conceptualise your Macroeconomics. It's not a basic text because it assumes introductory Macroeconomics as known but it is a great and a very complete intermediated text.
