In 1987, a year after Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns turned comics grim and gritty, artist Kevin Maguire proved that comics could still be fun, with the release of the "all-new" Justice League. His style was the perfect match for the humorous dialogue and character-driven stories, and the unlikely series quickly developed a large following. But the glue that held the series together was Maguire's ability to convey emotion on the page. The Justice League, Captain America, the X-Men, the Defenders... they are all actors on Maguire's stage, and he directs them with the ability of a true Modern Master. This new volume in the Modern Masters series features a career-spanning interview and tons of artwork, including a large gallery section featuring many rare and unpublished sketches and finished pieces.
George Khoury has written and edited the Eisner-nominated Kimota!, The Extraordinary Works of Alan Moore, True Brit, and Comic Book Fever. He served as senior editor to the award-winning Comic Book Artist magazine and as a regular contributor to the popular Modern Masters series. In the last 20 years, he's been a freelance writer for magazines, newspapers, and internet.
As always in these Modern Masters collections from TwoMorrows, the black and white line art, sketches, and never published examples of lost projects are amazing, but I have to say that Kevin Maguire is probably the most nondescript interview subject I've ever encountered. The man makes Robert De Niro look loquacious! If not for the valiant efforts of the interviewers, I imagine we wouldn't have gotten as much as we did, which is a series of "um, sure," "I don't know, maybe?" and "Mmmm." So, three stars for artwork fans, but don't come planning to learn much of anything about the man behind the pencil of same.
