Bachelor Chronicles #4

Confessions of a Little Black Gown

Rate this book
Thalia Langley spied him in the shadows and in an instant, knew the man before her was no pious saint. He might claim to be the Duke of Hollindrake’s unassuming country cousin, Milo Ryder, but no man that handsome, so arresting could be anything but... well, he simply must be an unrepentant rogue. His cat-like grace and power leaves Tally shivering in her slippers at the notion of all the wicked, forbidden things he might be capable of doing . . . to her, or the secrets he could uncover.

Indeed, Lord Larken is no bumbling vicar, but a master spy there in His Majesty’s service to find—and murder—a notorious pirate freed in a daring prison escape. Devoted to the Crown, Larken’s not about to let an interfering (and not entirely innocent) Mayfair miss disrupt his ruthless plans. He cannot be tempted . . . not even by the little black gown she dons to tantalize him . . . a dress revealing enough to lead even Larken astray.

Unfortunately, I didn't finish this one, so no star rating for me. I felt like it was one of those romances where the 'mystery' takes up more of the story than the romance. I loved the basic idea of the rakish hero masquerading as a nerdy vicar, but the lack of interaction between the hero and heroine made me uninterested in them. If you are a big fan of the rest of this series, I'm sure you would like the book because the supporting characters are a huge players in this one. One thing that disappointed me was the portrayal of Felicity as an unlikeable bossy busybody. I loved her character and her book, "Love Letters from a Duke", so I wanted to see her portrayed more positively. Overall not a bad book, I just wasn't interested in all the spying and mystery so I didn't finish.

Geoff Larkin is tasked with locating the escaped pirate Daswhwell and killing him dead. Thalia "Tally" Langley helped the dread pirate escape and now must keep him hidden from those who'd like to kill him dead. When their paths cross, SPARKS FLY because something something BONERS. Will these two spies be able to out-spy each other before someone gets their spy broken?

1. WHY WAS ANYONE EVEN TRYING TO SAVE DASH HE SEEMED LIKE AN ASSHOLE?

2. So as much as I loved the fact that Tally was On her Game and saw through most of Larkin's nonsense, that was still some of the most inept spygames bs I've seen in a romance novel in a while. Larkin loses his wits almost immediately when Tally flashes him French-siren eyes and nearly confesses his dark, dark history to her--even though he's used to seduction as a tool. Tally has solid suspicions of Larkin / Mr. Ryder but dismisses them again and again--even though she has a history of diplomacy / spy-games / growing up with shady people. It's like they both took the INTRO TO SPY class and crammed the night before the final instead of it being steeped into their every action and reaction, as it would if they had actual spy-experience.

3. CAN I SAY SPY AGAIN. SPYING SPYFULLY SPIES.

4. The romance was hilariously rushed. Day 1: suspicion; makeouts in the garden; arousal. Day 2: heartfelt conversation; confirmation he's an evil spy; confirmation she's helped a traitor escape; hero-drugging; SEX. Day 3: confessions of love; the climax of the book. I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU: IT WAS FAST AND LAZY.

5. I WANT TO KNOW THE STORY OF THE REAL MR. RYDER AND MISS DEFISSER???

6. Overall, I was whelmed. It was decently written, decently entertaining, and not all together disagreeable. I would seek out more by this author, although perhaps not the next in the series (as it's Pippin/Dash and idk about Dash). It just wasn't GREAT.

I LOVED this book! One of my favorite qualities in any book is if it could make me laugh - and while reading this, if I wasn't giggling, I was trying to unravel the mystery of the missing American pirate that was freed from one of England's most secure prisons.

In the very beginning, the book didn't seem anything out of the ordinary [for a historial romance:] but at about chapter 3, it really started to come to life. Tally (Thalia Langley) was such a fun, flirty character who was anything but ordinary. Lord Larken assumed the identity of the awkward and clumsy Vicar Ryder, but was in fact a very dangerous spy.

Upon meeting, they both suspected that neither was what they pretended to be so their encounters were attempts to get them to fumble their "pretenses" and reveal their true selves (which was actually amusing). Their encounters transformed from playing mind games to resisting their attraction and then finally giving in to their mutual passions.

Meanwhile, the truth of the missing American pirate Thomas Dashwell begins to reveal itself taking with it a slew of accomplices that totally catch you by surprise! This story is filled with twists, turns and surprises!

The storyline is a lot to keep up with because so much is going on, but I think it made it all the more fun. There is just a "dash" of the love story between Tally's cousin Pippin and Dash which I cannot wait to read about in Boyle's follow up, "Memoirs of a Scandalous Red Dress".

Tarihi aşka doyamadım, hemen bir yenisine daldım ☺️ Seriye ortadan giriş yapmışım yalnız. Bu yazar bana biraz Nora Roberts'ı anımsattı. Kurgu itibariyle tabii, yoksa tarzlarının birbirine benzediğini pek düşünmüyorum. Biraz macera, biraz suç, biraz polisiye karışımı ve oldukça heyecanlı bir tarihi aşk romanı. Çok olmasa da komedisi de var.

DNF. I Usually really enjoy Elizabeth Boyle's books and this started out well but I found myself bored and thinking of other books I want to read. It's been a few years since I read Felicity and Thatcher's story but I loved it and I don't remember her being so annoying. And I felt like this book was mostly to help set up Pippin and Dash's story and since I don't like Dash I've never been interested in reading that. I'm not invested enough in any of the rest of the characters to finish the series.

Thalia sees Lord Larkin and falls in love at first glance. Well, she falls in love with the dangerous man she sees under his unassuming cover, for Lord Larkin is pretending to be Rev. Milo Ryder while actually searching for the escaped pirate Thomas Dashwood. Larkin's mission to kill Dashwood brings him to conflict with Tally's goals, for after all she and her cousin Pippin were the ones who rescued him...

These just keep getting sillier!

after capek baru deh mereka balik....
gw suka bagian belakangnya nih hahahahaha.....

nanti pengen baca buku sebelumnya yang ttg felicity dan duke of hollindrake sebelum mereka merit....^^

Tally, Tilly, Pilly, Pippen, Dippen, Flippen

Nicknames, schmicknames. If you can get past the nicknames, you will find Confessions of a Little Black Gown to be a delightful book. I've mentioned before that I'm enjoying reading this series more now that I'm reading them one right after the other as opposed to the last time when I read them as they came out. While the books are written as stand-alones, I'm finding they work better when read in close proximity. This is a series full of rich storytelling and great characters - lots of characters.

Confessions of a Little Black Gown begins with our hero, Larken, as a youth witnessing the murder of his father by a shadowy organization of female assassins called the Black Lily. Fast forward. Larken is one of the many spies who seems to inhabit England and he has been told by the head of the spy organization that he must capture and kill Captain Dashwell, who they suspect is hiding out at the Duke of Hollendrake's house party. There is also a strong suspicion that Lady Phillipa Knowles and her cousin Thalia Langley are responsible for breaking Dashwell out of prison. Larken is sent to do the dirty deed and he's in disguise. He is disguised as a mild-mannered vicar, Mr. Ryder. He considers himself a pretty sneaky guy and a master of trickery. No one will be able to see through his camouflage. Enter Thalia Langley.

Thalia Langley, Tally to her friends, is a woman of unconventional upbringing. She dreams of a dangerous man who can sweep her away and fill her nights with thrilling adventures; none of that humdrum stuff for her. So when she hears a deep sensual voice coming from her brother-in-law's library, she thinks she has found him. Then she sees him, and his physical persona doesn't match the stimulating voice that sent chills down her spine. Immediately she suspects something is not quite right. Now, Tally is one smart cookie and her radar is on high alert. The reason for the high alert is because the suspicions of the English spy organization are correct. Tally did help Dashwell escape and she and Pippen (Lady Phillipa Knowles) are hiding him. She is on to Mr. Ryder from almost the very beginning; she knows he isn't who he says he is. She just doesn't know who he is. She sets out to trip him up and make his life harder. And the sparks fly. Larken, like most of Ms. Boyle’s male characters I'm finding out, just doesn't have a chance once he stumbles into Tally's net.

Confessions of a Little Black Gown is a great story, full of adventure, fun, mystery, villains and a wonderful cast of supporting characters.

Let's talk about Felicity. Felicity is Tally's sister and her story was told in Love Letters from a Duke. As I was reading this story it became abundantly clear to me just how much better these stories were when read close together. If I hadn't just read Felicity's story, I would have considered her a mean-spirited, irritating, controlling shrew in this book. However, because her character was so fresh in my mind, I had no problems with her and understood her better this time around. Felicity comes off better than she would if this were just a stand-alone book.

Overall, once again I was happy with my reread of this fun book, which is part of the Bachelor Chronicles. The test is going to be in the next book The Memoirs of a Scandalous Red Dress, which I don't believe I liked all that much.

I enjoyed this book a lot, I even giggled from time to time. And it was sure hard to keep a straight face while reading if there were others having lunch at the same time. I do love a good historical romance, there is just something sweet, and sometimes oh so wicked about them. Not to mention that I love the time and the manners.

I liked Thalia, she was strong, and she knew what she wanted, a wicked rake, pirate or perhaps a spy. So when the man she spies in the shadows actually is a vicar she is truly disappointed. But still there is something strange about him and she is very curious. How can one man seem to be one thing one moment and something else the next? And after she puts on the little black dress she found, well no one can resist that.

Lord Larken, is all man with a troubled past and a ruined reputation. He comes to the Hollingdrake estate posing as a country vicar, a bumbling fool. But after he has meet Tally he is lost, and he needs to focus on his true quest. To kill the pirate they are believing to be hiding somewhere in the house. Larken is a wicked hero that then is really sweet and torn between what to do. I like them both, cos they fit each other so well.

There is one thing that I didn't like though, the rest was great but I honestly did not care for the sex scene. It felt wrong and weird, it did nothing for me, and I read fast past it since it killed the mood for me.

But except for that this was a great book. Romance, spies and assassins, what was there not to like. I really want to read about Tally's sister Felicity now and see how she met her man because she seemed a bit caught up in her matchmaking and a bit hard at time. Would like to have seen her melt away. Still I liked her a lot too, just as I did their friend Pippin, and yes I want to read her story too, pirates ;) Ok I just want to read all her books in the end, lol. They all sound great.

There were some ideas with potential floating around in this book:
Little Black Gown, Spy/Vicar, playwriting heroines, pirate jailbreaks, secret female spy order, and such. Too bad it came together in a boring inane mush. Ugh.

Honestly, I don't really care about Tally or Larken, especially when they aren't all that admirable and don't have any depth. Boyle tries to give them life but they fall flat.

Also, I'm assuming the sister Felicity and the Duke were the H/H of a previous book, but Felicity came off as a shrewish snob and the Duke as a doormat.

Dash came off as a useless alphole and Pippin was ok, but pretty foolhardy/forgettable.

All around it had weak characters, plot, writing.

Mildly Entertaining Romance
3 stars

Thalia Langley has always wanted a grand adventure with a rogue who sets her heart on fire. When she spies a man in the shadows at a house party, she's sure she's met her dream man. Despite the man's claims that he's a bumbling country vicar, Tally is convinced there's more to him than meets the eye.

Lord Larken is certainly no vicar but rather a spy sent to kill a traitorous pirate. But he didn't count on stumbling across the enticing Tally and the way that she makes him forget his name, his mission and his heart.

This is the fourth book in Elizabeth Boyle's Bachelor Chronicles series (after This Rake of Mine, Something About Emmaline and Love Letters From a Duke) and there was a lot of continuing and linking storylines from the previous books in this one. I would suggest that perhaps it's best to have read the previous books in the series before reading this one for everything to make sense.

Overall, I'm sorry to say that I was a little disappointed by this book as a whole. There didn't seem to be much emotion between Tally and Larken and the plot got so overly complicated and convoluted that it was hard to take it seriously. I also found that Pippin and Dash's story completely overshadowed the main love story and while I'm looking forward to their book (the next in the series, Memoirs of a Scandalous Red Dress) it didn't say much for Tally and Larken's particular love story that it was so easily forgotten.

If you've read the previous books in the series and enjoyed them, I would recommend this book to you. While being very readable and mildly entertaining, it's not wildly gripping or exciting and I can only really give it three stars.

Another fun romp in this series, but I have to say... Tally's sister, "The Duchess" is such an unholy, rampaging bitch through like 95% of the book. I loved her story so much, and it showed to best advantage the good heart she hides beneath her meddling ways. But the heroine of that story and the woman we meet in this one seem like entirely different characters! Instead she's a shrewish busybody, forcing everyone around like her own personal chess pieces, so sure she's doing things in their best interests but in such an insufferable way. She put me off immensely. It was only in the final bit of the plot that she seemed like that previous character again. So that's my main reason for giving this one only 2 stars - the character continuity seemed way off and she annoyed the shit out of me with the way she bullied her sister about all the time.

Rating: Just ok.

Thalia is strong, and she knows what she wants. So when the man she spies in the shadows is actually a vicar she is disappointed, but still there is something about him. How can one man seem like 2 different men? And after she puts on the little black dress she found when her trunk is lost and someone else's is brought to her, she finds the man she thought she saw at first.
Lord Larken is a spy, he's sent to the Hollingdrake estate posing as a bumbling country vicar. He needs to focus on his assignment(assassinating a spy, his former friend, believed to be hidden in the house) but is continually distracted by Tally. Larken is torn between what to do and Tally shows him another way.
I did not like the sex scene though, he has been drugged and initially thinks he's dreaming or hallucinating.

It started out great, bogged down in the middle, and the last 1/4 was very interesting and unexpected when the house party ball started. I am giving this a 4 star instead of 3. Boyle is a masterful storyteller with witty asides especially about Tally's dog Brutus. Lord Larkin was kind of dull and I failed to see how he could go from dashing rogue to bumbling Vicar just by schooling his speech and posture. How could Tally fall in love so fast? Not much romance in this one, more about spies which gets tedious to follow after a while. Maybe I'm just jaded by reading so many Historical romance novels in a row. Yes 90% of the fiction I read is this genre. Love it.

This was a fun read.
I’m not feeling the fall madly in love within a couple of days trope. The initial meeting indicates a fated mates vibe via Thalia’s viewpoint; it seemed to aid in bypassing the development of the relationship.
What I tend to enjoy most is the growing connection between two people. The majority of this story, however, deals with Dashwell, spies, and nefarious plots. The plot was interesting enough to hold my attention, otherwise this would have left me feeling bereft.

I knew I shouldn’t have waste my time with this book. I mean, the story was great but it’s not a romance book. The main focus on this story was about the escape of Captain Dashwell and Felicity trying to deal with a house party. There was no love tension or stolen kisses just two ppl who are attractive to each other but who are masquerading, still no passion or anything. i hated it. I stop reading around pg 266

Although most of my boxes were ticked with this one (interesting and enterprising, intelligent main characters, somewhat complicated and not entirely predictable plot, clever dialogue, etc etc), for some reason this didn't quite enchant me as other books by this author have. I've enjoyed this series, and I did enjoy this one, but perhaps my expectations were too high. A good read nonetheless.

Me encantó!! Tiene todos los condimentos. Intriga, misterio, espionaje, enredos, momentos hilarantes, romance y pasión! Adoré a Lord Larken (hombre inteligente, lleno de conflictos y de personalidad arrolladora) y Tally me pareció una mujer increíble. Osada, atrevida, leal... Esta historia no las va a defraudar!!

The spy element of the story was good. The deep connection between the two sisters and the cousin was awesome. They are not your typical women of the Ton...
But the romance part not so good. Their first night was yak. And the redemption part too easy. But this make me curious about Philippa' story after that. And about the Duchess' story before this book.
