About the author

A transport economist and railway historian, Henry Patrick White was Lecturer in Geography at Edinburgh University from 1949 until 1952, ;Senior Lecturer at the University of West Africa from 1952 until 1963, Reader in Geography at Salford College of Advanced Technology (later Salford University) from 1963 until 1972 and Professor of Geography from 1972 until 1982.
