I read the Indonesian version, and it was excellent. I really like it.I will be reading the full version in English soon.
It is so heartbreaking. I guess I love animals so much, and what Ahab did was brutal and cruel. However, they should not harm the whale. The whale is an adorable creature.

Eventhough this book is saddleback version of its origin. It didn't subtract the essence of the story. For me this is really great because I only want to know Moby Dick story. Really great for those who are interested in classic but didn't have the time to read the original work. Or perhaps you would immediately want to read the original one after read this version.

Incredible read with many profound statements written as dialogue:

"Swerve me? Ye cannot swerve me. My soul is grooved to run upon rails of iron."

The book becomes somewhat tedious at times. The physiology of a whale is not something that interests me. And yet, at least 30 pages were devoted to the dissection of the animal.

You probably hated this book when it was required reading in high school. Do yourself a favor. Read it again. You will pleasantly surprised. I was.

Always thought it was just an adventure story. Surprised how much mid 19th century, anthropology , biology and whaling history. Surprised by the relatively enlightened view of cultures and different religions. However, did find myself forcing myself through some of the 'lecture' like bits and thinking just get on with catching that 'blooming' whale!

I'm re-reading this as I don't remember getting through the entire book in high school. My daughter has to read it this year for American Literature so I thought I would get a jump start on it! This was one of the toughest books I have ever read. The meat of the book is about 100 pages enveloped around a historical perspective of whaling. The beginning and end were the next part.

I loved Melville's writing style during most of the book. He is a very well read man and includes much depth and breadth, including biblical and mythological comparisons throughout (which I loved).

It did get tiresome when I had to endure 3 chapters on why no one can properly draw a whale.

All in all I am glad I read it!

First time I'd read it cover to cover--I had to wait until I was old enough, I guess:)
