Au Mali, photographier quelqu'un, c'est lui ravir son "double vital". C'est, d'une certaine façon, l'envoûter. Malgré cet inconvénient, le photographe Seydou Keita est parvenu à convaincre certains de ses concitoyens à poser pour lui dans leurs plus beaux costumes.

I loved discovering Seydou Keïta, the Malian portrait photographer who managed to challenge and ultimately transform his community’s spiritual belief that having one’s photo taken could capture the soul.
Starting in the 1950s, Keïta’s studio in Bamako became a vibrant window into the city’s evolving society—a place where people could present themselves with pride and style ✨️
This book is a true gem. I especially enjoyed the detailed captions that describe the traditional clothing and accessories, giving even more context to each portrait.
The women’s portraits, in particular, are absolutely stunning—full of elegance, confidence, and grace 💖
