Mo Money, Mo Problems!

For those, like myself, exhausted and frustrated by one dimensional story lines that lack character development, Caroline McGill's fourth novel, A DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT 3, will come as a relief. It's a welcome reminder that some folks still know how to write layered stories with interesting, dimensional characters. Whether it's Portia, Laila, Fatima or one of the guys, each character is distinct with their own personality and issues.

DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT 3: MO' MONEY...MO' PROBLEMS concerns the friendship of Portia, Laila and Fatima.

Pregnant and happily married, Portia's house and affairs seem to be all in order. Of course, the occasional drama pops off, but nothing she can't handle. No relationship is beyond tests. Can Portia handle the ultimate test?

Fatima is lost and grieving the death of her husband, Wise. She doesn't know if she's coming or going. Sinking deeper and deeper into depression, Fatima finds solace. But is it the help she really needs?

Laila has a crackhead husband, a dead daughter and a married lover. Can things get any worse? Yes! After a horrific accident, she can't walk. Wallowing in self-pity, Laila sets out to drive everyone she loves away before they walk away. Will it work?

Love, friendship and forgiveness are intregal parts of this story. Weighing in at almost 400 pages, it takes its time. While part three doesn't pack the punch and intensity of book one and two, it's definitely a contender. McGill's third-person narrative flows smoothly, allowing the drama and plot to branch out in many directions. A very worthy effort. My motto for '09 is: Just Say No to Sequels! Like so many, I'm tired of them. They've lost their nostalgia because everyone and their momma, aunt, uncle and cousin is writing one. BUT...there's always an exception to the rule and Caroline is among the very few that has the talent and skill to make readers want more. That said, I'm looking forward to another fix (and some more time with my boo Cas) with A DOLLAR OUTTA FIFTEEN CENT IV: MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND.

Now, I'm a stickler so I gotta go there because it was very distracting for me. I hope with future releases an editor that has a better grasp of punctuation is utilized. The editor made or allowed for the same errors repeatedly. 1) Commas were misplaced outside of quotation marks. (Jay walked Jayquan upstairs to his room for a "man to man". AND When I asked Mama Mitchell, she said, "no".) An error I'm finding more and more with books today. I think it's gotten to the point where people see it in other books and assume it's correct. There are occasions when punctuation does belong outside the quotation marks, and a good editor knows when. 2) Commas used after appropriate punctuation was already used. ("Are you all suspects in these murders?",) 3) Apostrophe S. The s was always missing in reference to Wise. (Outside of Wise' hospital room.) Again, I hope this is fixed before the next release.

Definitely Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems

Author Caroline McGill bring us part lll in this saga. She brings back all my favorites that I have been following Jay and Portia, Fatima, Casino and Laila. She picks up right where part ll left off and answers the big questions that left me hanging. Along with answering the question she left a bigger one that was left unanswered in this book, that was disappointing to me that she never touch on it again. You will have to read it because to say would be spoiling the book. She introduces us to some new characters that brought mo’ drama to the story ie Ysatis, Callie who is Simone younger sister and her boyfriend Smoke, Vino and Five which I hope we see more off in part lV.

I enjoyed part lll and I have no choice but to tune into part lV if I want to know the answers. There are a few errors the most noticeable to me was a discrepancy in a dollar amount for a job that was said to be paid at 15,000 but when they were paid, it was only for 10,000. I also wonder when this saga is going to be over I am growing tired of it. While I enjoyed the novels, enough is enough. It will be interesting to see in part lV if she peaks my interest again because I don’t know how many more books in this saga I am willing to read.

Friends & Lovers

Back in 2004, author Caroline McGill hit it big with "A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent," a drama about four friends. A few years later she followed up with part II, "Money Talks... Bullsh*t Walks," in which the drama continued despite the loss of one friend.

Now, McGill has given us number three starring the same cast and crew. This time, in "A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent III: Mo' Money...Mo' Problems" the friends find themselves dealing with issues of infidelity, pregnancy, drug abuse, health problems and jealousy. In the past they've managed to deal with their issues and move forward. Will the same hold true this time?

Caroline McGill writes vividly and well. "A Dollar Outta Fifteen Cent III" offers readers a tale that mixes love, drama and action. As always, I love how McGill always incorporates the need for safe sex and HIV/AIDS awareness. Although I have really enjoyed keeping up with these friends and look forward to part four, I think maybe the time has come to put them on the shelf and strike out in a different direction.
