Perhaps no period in Christian history experienced such social tumult and upheaval as the Reformation, as it quickly became apparent that social and political issues, finding deep resonance with the common people, were deeply entwined with religious ones raised by the Reformers. Led by eminent Reformation historian Peter Matheson, this volume of A People's History of Christianity explores such topics as child-bearing, a good death, rural and village piety, and more. Includes 50 illustrations, maps, and an 8-page color gallery.

Book 5 of A People’s History of Christianity. For someone raised in a Protestant church as I was, this is the when the religion starts to feel familiar. A note on the series title: If we take “people” to mean the general public, then this series may be ABOUT the people, but it’s not necessarily FOR the people. In other words, these are fairly scholarly articles, not as encumbered with APA citations as you might expect to find in peer-reviewed journals, but also not introductory readings on the subject. Additionally, these articles each approach the notion of “a people’s history” from different perspectives and through the eyes of different groups of people. This is not meant to be a straightforward history of Christianity, but rather supplemental material for readers who are already familiar with much of that history.
