This is a Dick and Jane book, if Dick and Jane were Amish children on a farm.
In other words, it's a basal reader with controlled vocabulary. The introduction of new words is pretty gentle, so it's great for building confidence, reading stamina and fluency with sight words.
Not a lot of literary value here, but 6-year-old will keep reading this series for at least another book or two. She's thrilled to have chapter books that are minimally frustrating.
First reader for kindergarten level reading. This is continuing stories that build on each other about a family of four children and their parents and various farm animals that live back in a more rural time. Of the early readers we have tried, this one is the most interesting for my girls and they seem to pick up more of the very common words faster than a lot of other readers.
Just finished it with my 6 year old, she was very excited to get to the end.
My son loves the Pathway Readers. The main reason is because of the drama--spankings, arguments, dealing with a naughty dog and even dressing up the cat. Being a mom, I appreciate the valuable lessons, but I do find several of the stories humourous too.
This is my first reader. Also my first pathway book. And still my favorite (up to "busy times")
This is the story of two boys and their dogs. One dies and they must replace their dog. You will also meet a lot of characters and learn about their family, farms, and school life.
THis book is a five star book, but it is also a 1 star book because it is sort of dumb. So they mostly always talk about the animals, which is why it is a five star book because I really like that. And it is a 1 star book because these people are just like dumb, they are like they cannot go play in the water, why can't they just put on their jackets, because then they can.
Pathway Publishers is an Amish publishing house; this is the first in a series of readers used in contemporary Amish one-room schoolhouses, as well as by (mostly other Anabaptist?) homeschoolers.
