This is a Dick and Jane book, if Dick and Jane were Amish children on a farm. (It's a basal reader with controlled vocabulary.) This is the mid-first grade reader that is not aggressive about adding words- only 117 new words are introduced in this 155-page book--the rest were in the previous reader, "First Steps."
My 6-year-old found this book pretty funny and read it happily. We use these books to work on fluency/prosody--there is a lot of of dialogue that can be read with drama.
One content note - the second half of the book involves a misbehaving puppy who is getting (implied) beatings for digging holes, chewing on shoes, etc., so he learns to be a good dog...
