Where do your loyalties lie?

Author June paints a realistic picture of a hustler named Junior who takes over the Baptiste Projects where his unsophisticated street style catapults him to boss status. But being an outsider making money in their hood does not sit well with the resident homies, who are jealous of the competition they know nothing about.
When an attempt to take over Junior’s operation is dodged it comes as a surprise to Junior who had become just a little too comfortable. Treating the apparent danger as an eye opener Junior steps back to regroup and plot while leaving a loyal soldier as front man to keep his operation running.
But as the body count starts to raise Junior realizes he can’t fight this battle alone…but who can he trust?

Author June presents a strong debut novel here with interesting developments that kept me involved in the story. It was clear where the character Junior made his mistakes and I can’t really blame Lakim for feeling like he was the man…because in actuality he was!

Fine tuning on the editing was needed in my review copy, but I’ve already received a copy of the revised version and I’m looking forward to following Junior in This Game Has No Loyalty part 2 & 3. This is one for the street lit fans!

L. Miller, in his debut novel, This Game Has No Loyalty, describes the love of money, the love of women and the lack loyalty in the game of the streets. Junior, a hard-knock young hustler who still had milk behind his ears has represented the Baptiste Projects all his life, for which he has gained much respect amongst his peers. His plan for taking over his entire hood was well thought-out in his head. The only problem was executing it by foot. Along the way, Junior learns the hard way that making friends wasn't as easy as he thought.

While under the guidance of his older cousin Craig, he finds out that the things he thought he was doing right were wrong in every way. Junior witnessed first hand that his closest friends were his closest enemies. They wanted his hood along with the local stick up kids who tried to rob and kill him and his crew. While he traveled back and forth on the A train to purchase dope from a world renowned Dominican supplier, his love for the streets and his love for his girl Shondra repelled like north and south. She demanded too much love and attention from him and his craving of love and respect from all the other projects that he was supplying didn't allow any room for his slowing down to tend to his woman. Ultimately he loved his girl and there was nothing that could pull him away from her besides money and his other woman, Muffin. Muffin agreed to ride and die for him. She was down to do just about anything to be next to him, alone. That included the plan of getting rid of Shondra at any cost. However, Muffin would soon be Junior's downfall. Her rage and envy took a toll on Junior's emotions which caused him to make the ultimate mistake in the game.

What I liked best about this book?
This book actually was set outside the box with distinctive descriptions to tell the story; I love the love connection amongst Junior and his girlfriend Shondra. It actually balances the hard grimy tale with real life emotions. I enjoyed reading through the highs and lows of friendships, partnerships, and relationships.

What I disliked about this book?
It started off a little slow but gradually the pace of the story was a fire cracker.

How could the author improve this book?
This author could have lengthened the story line and explanation of the end. It was a good ending but needed just a little more details right before the exit.

"Keep Eyes In The Back Of Your Head"

Junior is holding things down in Baptise Housing Projects in BK. Jr is running a tight ship with some young soldiers (Lakim and Kendu) holding him down. When a stick up kids gets wind of Jr operation will these young soldier be true? Jr also has his girl Sondra holding him down, she keep an ear to the streets. Jr is not big time yet as he still makes hand-to-hand sales himself. The problem comes in when a local (Stump) finds out he getting most of the money in Baptise, as nobody is hustling in this part of town. Stump starts to gather info on Jr and all hell breaks loose. The hood is hot and Jr is marked for death so Jr takes a step back to re-gather himself and makes La is his right hand man, this is when the money really starts to pour in. Now the locals show their true colors and don’t want an outsider getting all the money. Put in the mix a couple of dirty cops who stop at nothing to get their criminals.

This Game Has No Loyalty is a decent read. It was hard to go back into time a read about people beeping one another and waiting on corners to receive a call back, I give L.J Miller credit for being able to pull this off, I remember when we did live like this seems hard to believe with cell phones a part of lives today. The characters in this book seem to be naïve and make moves that seem like rookie mistakes. I realize that most are rookies in the game; they just seem to have no common sense. I do see where Author L.J. Miller was going with the story and by the end of the book; the story comes together, with a shocker. This game has no Loyalty is the perfect title for this book as it contains all that the name covers, backstabbing, disloyalty, jealousy, manipulation, stealing, robbing, revenge, killing, scheming. This book gives new meaning to; never let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

I get the feeling this Author will get better as he pens his next book, I look forward to reading more from this author I see him only getting better.

Trust No One

Junior's game plan is simple; he's decided to start his own business right in the Baptiste Housing Projects. Technically, he isn't from the area, but his girl Shondra is. Thanks to loyalty and dedication, business is doing great! Fairness has kept things flowing well. However, Junior finds out that someone may not be happy with the way things have been going in the Baptiste Housing Projects. When trouble comes knocking will Junior be prepared? You can never be too careful; there is no loyalty when it comes to the streets.

L. J. Miller has written a good book, with the added suspense in the end making for a great cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to the continuation of this story.
