Z is for Zorglub was a unique read. I am an enormous fan of Franquin's work, especially 'Gaston,' but this particular one did not fully captivate my interest. What I enjoyed the most were the comic illustrations - Franquin was an incredibly talented artist and I love the character designs, expressions, and sharp attention to detail. The chosen palette is fascinating to look at and colors really pop out.
However, the story was mediocre at best in my opinion. Some parts were interesting, but most of the storytelling dragged and it failed to fully engage. The characters were good and each had a distinct personality. Overall it was a fun and entertaining yet an unexceptional read.

Super aventure de Spirou et Fantasio. Un méchant très méchant, des inventions incroyables, de l'humour, bref tous les ingrédients pour faire un chouette album.

De tekeningen in het eerste Zwendel-verhaal zijn top, al zit er ondertussen iets minder Zwier in. Het scenario is tamelijk rigide met focus op de karakters van de Graaf van Rommelgem en de gefrustreerde geleerde Zwendel, waardoor er ook minder actie in dit verhaal zit. Eveneens minder Zwans van Spip of Zotte toeren van de Marsupilami die de Zout en peper in deze reeks was geworden.

This is a 1977 hardback reprint in French from Dupuis. Originally serialised between 1959 and 1960 and published in book form in 1961, this is the first half of a two parter from the Franquin, Jidéhem, and Greg team.
And what a cracking story this is!
Introducing Zorglub, a polymath like the Count, but one determined to rule the world. And also a highly clumsy and naive, accident-prone and neurotic comedy villain. This story is a precursor to so many tropes or an early user of such tropes. Ideas such as mind-control waves, crowd manipulation, self-driving and flying cars, reusable vertical landing rockets, and publicity in space, are beautifully used here and still cutting edge some sixty years after first publication.
This is a superbly realised adventure, one of the best in the series.

Un très bon tome avec Zorglub, un ancien ami du Conte de Champignac, que l'on retrouve dans "l'Ombre du Z". Zorglub a trouvé la formule de la Zorglonde, une onde douée de pouvoirs multiples. Fantasio se fait transformer contre son grès en Zorglomme, des serviteurs qui ont été "robotisés" en quelque sorte par la Zorglonde.
Mais quel est la plan ultime de Zorglub? Un mystère que cherchent à percer Spirou, Fantasio,et leurs compagnons Marsupilami et Spip.

Det ska erkännas att den här recensionen inte är helt befriand från nostalgi och kanske får ett lite väl högt betyg på grund av att det är en av mina absoluta favoriter när det kommer till Spirou.
Det genialiska och missförstådda geniet Zafir (Evel Rifaz) har utvecklat en stråle som förslavar mänskligheten och av någon anledning vill han blanda in Greven i sina planer som bland annat innebär reklam på månen. Olyckligtvis stoppas han av Spirou och gänget men under resans gång får vi uppleva Zafirs storhet i repliker som:
"Vad hindrar Zafirs färd mot ärans tinnar?"
"Smuts i förgasaren"
Zafir är en karaktär som rör sig med en otrolig värdighet samtidigt som han inte kan sätta sig på en stol utan att det blir total kalabalik. Jag är själv väldigt förtjust i karaktärern och har skrivit en liten psykologisk profil på honom:

Serien genererade en hel del fortsättningar som jag tyvärr måste läsa och recensera här på goodreads bara för att dom är så jäkla bra.
Just det här albumet har en otroligt skön slap-stick känsla och många snyggt uppbyggda skämt. Det är genuint roligt även om manuset är ganska knasigt. En tredjedel av albumet är en komplicerad plan av Zafir för att lämna ett meddelande.
Det finns några små detaljer i Franquins teckningstil som är värda att nämna. Varje bybo eller polis lyckas få en egen personlighet. Hans folkmassor är generellt roliga att se på.

Dem Grafen von Rummelsdorf kündigt sich ein alter Bekannter an: sein Studienkollege Zyklotrop, der damals von der Uni flog und seither daran arbeitete, zum Superschurken zu werden, der die Herrschaft über das ganze Universum anstrebt. Er hat eine geniale Erfindung vorzuweisen: den Zyklostrahl, mit dem er Menschen gefügig macht und sie seiner Privatarmee aus Zyklomännern hinzufügt. Er hofft, den Grafen überzeugen zu können, mit ihm zusammenzuarbeiten - was dieser natürlich direkt ablehnt. Aber als Zyklotrop dann Fantasio entführt und scheinbar zum Zyklomann macht, müssen Spirou und der Graf dann doch hinterher. Mit einer den Zyklomännern entwendeten Rakete suchen sie seine Station auf und können - gemeinsam mit Fantasio, der sich nur verstellte - dem Schurken das Handwerk legen und seine Verstecke auf der Erde offenbaren.

Ein fantastischer Spirou-Band und der perfekte Einstieg für den ebenso teuflischen wie tollpatschigen Zyklotrop. Der Band erscheint mir deutlich "dichter" als so viele andere Spirou-Abenteuer, von Anfang bis Ende vollgestopft mit Action. Absolut klasse!

To note: The past couple of years I've been adding comic/graphic novels to the reading list to keep my head in a good part of my training: Sequential storytelling.
This is the best of the Spirou series I've read. The plot is rather simple. It's the execution and all tied to it that has this a more complicated and fulfilling graphic novel. The bad guy is well introduced through pages and then a splash of an image. From that point the tentacles of the plot spread and snares all in one form or other. How the duo heroes and squirrel and the odd animal get caught up and wrapped into the story is full of clever situations and good storytelling. One welcome missing element are pages of slapstick.
The artwork is very good. Especially negotiating through large crowds and giant machinery.
A major drawback is the font and size used throughout. With such an involved tale, the font setting makes too much hard to read.
Bottom line: I recommend this book. 9 out of ten points.

Une BD aussi géniale que Zorglub et Champignac! Tout l'humour et le talent de Franquin, au sommet de sa forme. Avec un scénario co-écrit avec le maître qu'était Greg, et la contribution de Jidéhem, c'est une des meilleures aventures de Spirou et Fantasio (avec l'album précédent Le Prisonnier du Bouddha, la suite de cet album L'Ombre du Z, QRN sur Bretzelburg et Le Nid du Marsupilami.

Dit album introduceert Zwendel, medestudent van de graaf van Rommelgem en geniaal, zij het nogal megalomaan uitvinder. Zwendels engste uitvinding, de Zwendelstraal, beïnvloedt de meningen van hele populaties en verandert mensen in gedachtenloze robots. Maar Franquin, met zijn afschuw voor geweld, maakt het nergens echt eng. Voor dit avontuur kreeg Franquin hulp van Greg voor het scenario.

Samarbeidet med Greg fungerer bra. Denne er mer teksttung enn tidligere album. Zorglub er en av de beste serieskurkene jeg kjenner. Lett gjenkjennelig utseende, narsissistisk, klønete, krenkbar, grandios...

If you can look past their names, the lack of a female, and the visual ridiculousness of that conveyancelad Spirou's wearing you will find a lot of laughs! These goofy Belgians had a market to sell to and did it well but it's not strictly kids!
