'חיי נישואים' היה חריג זנוח בדרך-המלך של הספרות העברית כשנדפס לראשונה ב-1929-30, והפך לאחד הספרים המרכזיים של הפרוזה העברית המודרנית כשנדפס בנוסח חדש ב-1986.
כשהופיע הספר ב-1986, בנוסח שערך מנחם פרי על-פי כתב-היד שפוגל החביא בטרם נשלח למחנה-השמדה, נכתב על העטיפה שהופעתו יהיה בה "כדי לקבוע את מקומו של פוגל כפרוזאיקון שחשיבותו אינה נופלת מחשיבותו כמשורר". תחזית זו התגשמה מאז במלואה, ו'חיי נישואים' גם הפך לרב-מכר גדול. פוגל "הנידח" השפיע עתה על סופרים מרכזיים, ותרגומים של הספר הופיעו בארה"ב, אנגליה, צרפת, הולנד, גרמניה, ספרד... העיתונות הספרותית בכל העולם כתבה על גדולתו, והשוותה אותו לשניצלר, קאנטי, אך שוב ושוב בעיקר לקאפקא.
גורדוייל, האנטי-גיבור, נקלע ליחסים מוזרים, סאדו-מאזוכיסטיים, עם אשתו הברונית תיאה, שמתעללת בו, שוכבת עם ידידיו ושאר מזדמנים, מודיעה לו על בגידותיה, וטורחת להטעים לו שגם ילדם אינו בנו. אבל גורדוייל דבק בקשר הזה, ואינו נותן דעתו לאהבתה אליו של לוטי, ידידתו.

David Vogel (1891–1944) was a Russian-born Hebrew poet, novelist, and diarist. He was born in the town of Satanov in the Podolia region of the western Ukraine. A Yiddish speaker, he grew up in Vilna and Lvov, settling in Vienna in 1912. During World War I he was arrested as a Russian enemy alien. In 1929–1930 he spent time in Palestine, returning afterwards to live in Berlin.

Çok güçlü ama ağır, kasvetli bir psikolojik roman Evlilik Hayatı. Ana karakter Gurdweill'ın inanılmaz zayıflığına, karısı Thea'nın da o ölçüdeki kötülüğüne, aralarındaki sadomazohist ilişkiye 450 sayfa boyunca isyan etmeden sabır göstermeniz gerekiyor. Bunu başarırsanız da sağlam edebiyatın zevkine varıyor, insanoğlu denen karmaşık varlığı anlama yolunda belki biraz daha mesafe kat ediyorsunuz. Romanda yukarıda değindiklerim dışında da çok etkileyici karakterler var. Tabii en önemli karakterlerden biri de, iki savaş arası dönemin Viyana'sı. Bir-iki yerde yaklaşmakta olan Holokost felaketinin işaretlerini de alıyorsunuz. Maalesef Vogel'in de 1944'de Auschwitz'de hayatını kaybettiği varsayılıyormuş. Avusturya'nın çok güçlü bir edebiyat damarı var ve İbranice yazan Vogel'i de bu damara dahil etmek gerekir herhalde. Vogel'in daha fazla bilinmesi, okunması gerekir sonucuna vardım kitabı bitirince. Son olarak, bu kitabı okumama vesile olan Goodreads'den sanal dostum kitabın çevirmeni Şahika Tokel'e de kotardığı gayet iyi iş için selam olsun.

Il diavolo veste Thea
La prima cosa che mi ha colpito di questo libro del 1929 di Vogel è il titolo, che ci fa pensare a un romanzo dove vengano descritte le dinamiche coniugali, belle o brutte, dolci o angosciose che possano essere. Leggendo il libro però, scritto in modo divino, più che in un menage familiare ci si accorge di trovarsi nel mezzo di un incubo.
La coppia è formata da due persone alquanto diverse tra loro. La "fragile" donzella, Thea, decisa, determinata, spregiudicata, emancipata, insensibile, libertina, dura e crudele; il "fustacchione" Gordweil, docile, buono, appassionato, remissivo, credulone, debole, generoso, innamorato.
Troppo sbilanciata la coppia, troppo il divario tra i due, troppe le cose che il poveretto deve sopportare senza fiatare, troppa l'umiliazione e la degradazione, troppa la tristezza che infonde questa "vita coniugale".
L'unica chiave di lettura credibile per me è quella, già menzionata da molti, della metafora del popolo ebraico.
Vogel sembra dirci che il popolo ebraico, come il povero Gordweil, ha passato tutta la sua esistenza amando un mondo che non lo ama, cercando di integrarsi con una mentalità e una cultura diversa dalla propria, aspettandosi un riconoscimento che non è mai arrivato, non notando (o cercando di non notare) il profondo disprezzo con cui è ripagata la sua dedizione, non reagendo ai continui schiaffi fisici e morali che gli sono stati inferti.
Gordweil, che in fondo rappresenta pure lo stesso Vogel, ha una vita interiore intensa ma vive soffrendo nel dolore, senza ben capire la direzione verso cui andare.
"Dopo aver camminato... su è giù... Gordweil cominciò ad andare lungo il muro del cimitero: forse avrebbe trovato un ingresso. Ma il muro non aveva fine. Gordweil capì che non avrebbe avuto la forza di arrivare all'altro capo del muro; tornò indietro e si fermò... ad aspettare. Se qualcuno gli avesse chiesto che cosa aspettava, certo non avrebbe saputo rispondere"
Un debole, quindi. Ma:
"Il mondo appartiene agli eroi e i deboli non hanno altra scelta che affrettarsi ad andarsene! Che bisogno c'è di prolungare la loro agonia? Il mondo va avanti grazie ai forti, agli eletti."
L'epilogo non può che essere terribile.
Un libro sconvolgente, questo. Tristissimo, angosciante, stremante, svilente, scritto con una prosa superba.
P.S.: in molte descrizioni del libro ho letto cose come "perversione erotica", "rapporti basati sulla tortura non meno che sul piacere". La copertina del libro, un quadro di Schiele, mostra una donna semisvestita.
E' incredibile come al fine di vendere libri si indichino cose assolutamente fuorvianti come il sesso, che in questo libro è proprio cosa marginale.

Onu izlediğinde, seyrini takip ettiğinde inatla dururdu; yarım saat sonsuzluğa dek uzayabilirdi. Başlangıçlar, diye düşündü Gurdweill, genellikle esas olaydan daha uzun sürer... Hayatın tümü bu başlangıçlardan oluşmuştur ve geri kalanlar birkaç kısa andan daha uzun sürmez..."

Evlilik Hayatı, uzun zaman önce aldığım; fakat nedense sevmeyeceğimi düşünüp okumayı ötelediğim bir romandı. 2020 yılının sonuna yaklaşmışken bir şeyler beni bu kitabı artık okumam için zorladı. Belki daha erken ya da bir başka zaman okusaydım bu kadar hoşuma gitmezdi, bilemiyorum. Kitabı elime alabildiğim vakitlerde büyük bir merakla okudum. Bir başkası için çok akıcı bir kitap olarak gelmeyebilir belki; ancak benim için akıp gittiğini söyleyebilirim. Bunda Vogel'in anlatımının elbette büyük rolü var. Aslında Evlilik Hayatı, oldukça kasvetli bir roman. Sadist bir kadın, ona aşırı bağlı mazoşist bir koca, bu kocaya için için âşık, kendi değerinin bir türlü farkına varamayan bir başka kadın ve iki dünya savaşı arasında Viyana. Pek çok noktada sinirimin bozulduğunu söylesem de Vogel dönemi ve Viyana'yı o kadar iyi anlatmış ki okurken tıpkı Gurdweill nasıl zaman zaman hayallere dalıp gidiyorsa bende yer yer Viyana sokaklarında dolaştığımı, bir kafede kahve içtiğimi ya da küçük bir pansiyonda pencereden karın yağışını izlediğimi hissettim. Tabii bu noktada çevirmen Şahika Tokel'i de tebrik etmek lazım. Zira çok akıcı ve başarılı bir çeviri koymuş ortaya.
Vogel'in İkinci Dünya Savaşı esnasında bir toplama kampında vefat ettiği "sanılıyor"muş. Böyle bir yazar için çok erken ve çok acıklı bir ölüm. Gerçi kim için değil ki...

I found this book beautifully written and very interesting as a metaphor for the relationship between Jews and Austrians before WWII. But a few things bothered me: The book would be more interesting if the author had included something of Rudolph Gurdweill's childhood/adolescence - just in terms of better understanding where he's coming from. Also, I found the sado/maso relationship to be a little over the top,
so that at time the story seemed almost surreal, though I'm not sure if that's what the author was trying to do.
Most interesting of all to me was Vogel's caricature-like portrayals of the Austrian characters. Some of them seemed like precursors to Elfride Jelenik's extremely critical depictions of post-war Viennese. In any case, this is a very worthwhile read in terms of a historical document.

Author and poet David Vogel, who was presumed killed in 1944 at Auchwitz, wrote one book, "Married Life", published originally in 1929 in Hebrew, but then translated by Dalya Bilu and reprinted first in 1988 in English. I mention the dates because Vogel was writing contemporaneously about Vienna in the mid-1920's.
David Vogel's story is about Vienna in the years after WW1. Anti-Semitism was a constant undertone in Vienna and vestiges of it were present in every-day society. Rudolf Gurdweill, a somewhat published writer, is looking sporadically for paying work but is mainly living the life of a poor bon vivant in Vienna's coffee houses and restaurants. He supports himself by asking friends for money, occasionally publishing something, and sometimes receiving money sent from his sister in America. Gurdweill, a Jew, meets Thea, a baroness from a noble family, rich in tradition, but poor in coin. He falls for her, she tolerates him, and they marry. It's the marriage-from-hell and lasts a few years.
Reviewers accurately point out that the basis of the book is that the Protestant Thea looks down and belittles every part of the Jewish Rudolf (or "Rabbit" as she calls him). They write that Thea represents Christian Vienna and Rudolf represents Jewish Vienna. But here's the problem. David Vogel makes it clear in his book that Thea willingly converts to Judaism and is married in a Jewish wedding ceremony. Why would SHE as the dominant partner, choose to embrace the religion of the weaker partner? In fact, Jews in Germany and Austria had for decades been going the other way; THEY were choosing to convert to Christianity to join the mainstream. The ultimate in assimilation, as it were. The fact that Thea proceeds to mock every part of Rudolf's life - including his, and now her - religion makes this plot point unworkable in my mind as a reader. A more accurate plot would be Rudolf converting to Christianity and then Thea cruelly mocking him for doing so. And, of course, making fun of Judaism, his former religion.
Religion anomalies aside, Vogel's picture of Vienna and its people at the time is beautifully written. He takes the reader back to that troubled time and because he's writing contemporaneously, his observations are particularly reliable and trenchant. A jewel of a book it is.

I read this book many years ago, as a young adult, full of hopes and dreams about relationships. I did not fully grasp the nuances and deeper meaning of what happens to our protagonist, but I sensed the undercurrent and despair and understood the cruelty of being trapped as he is. Now I appreciate it a lot more and would say that this is one of the most important books I have ever read. Vastly underrated and barely known, almost lost it seems, as time goes by.

"Ogni riccio un capriccio. E il povero Vincenzo mio, lo fa martire dal primo momento in cui al mattino apre gli occhi. Non fa che comandarlo." Vincenzo, decenne, che risponde sollecito a ogni richiesta della tirannica sorellina, santo subito! La madre gli dice: "Ogni tanto puoi pure dire di no a tua sorella". Lui risponde, responsabile e serissimo: "La maestra dice che alle femmine non si può dire mai di no". Occhi pallatissimi miei e della madre.
Paraculaggine della maestra a parte, mentre leggevo "Vita coniugale" di Vogel, non ho potuto fare a meno di ripensare alla suggestiva locuzione della madre di Mariarita.
E sì, perché Thea, il "suo" Gordweil lo fa proprio martire. E non si capisce come un uomo possa resistere a tanta crudeltà. Senza opporre resistenza, senza lamentarsi, con passiva e supina accettazione. Thea è sadicamente orribile, tanto da apparire illogica e inesplicabile la mancanza di reattività di Gordweil. Tanto che vien voglia di entrare nel libro e scuoterlo per ottenere una sua reazione.
Leggendo la vita di Vogel e la sua storia, non si può far a meno di pensare che il racconto non sia che una metafora del popolo ebreo nella sua mancanza di opposizione all'olocausto.
Curiosa, se fosse una metafora, la scelta di rappresentarlo come un rapporto di coppia, completamente sbilanciato nei rapporti di forza al femminile.
Una Vienna decadente e terribile. Un uomo che non trova pace, esule ed errabondo, Gordweil, proprio forse come lo stesso Vogel, non solo si fa martirizzare, ma pure sembra non riuscire a trovare una sua collocazione nel mondo.
Una storia che definire tristissima è eufemistico. Le ultime pagine si leggono con un peso al cuore e divengono spessissime, quasi interminabili.
Una prosa tra tragedia e poesia. Struggente e originalissima. Una lettura che va presa però con le pinze. Regala due personaggi indimenticabili, che non sono sicura di essere stata contenta di aver conosciuto. Si parla proprio di pessimismo cosmico, alla Leopardi maniera. Un libro cui mi rimane difficile attribuire un giudizio in termini di stellettatura.
Recentemente ho soggiornato a Trani in un bellissimo B&B del centro. La proprietaria, una forza della natura, simpaticissima e molto cordiale, ha usato tutti gli espedienti a sua disposizione per farci sentire a nostro agio nonostante i capriccetti della stupenda figlioletta Mariarita, quattro anni, bruna, riccia, occhi cigliatissimi, dentini bianchi come grani di riso. "Ogni riccio un capriccio. E il povero Vincenzo mio, lo fa martire dal primo momento in cui al mattino apre gli occhi. Non fa che comandarlo." השאלה מיוכט בטיול לליסבון. העלילה חולנית, מוזרה ומרתקת והדמות הראשית מופתית. הסיום היה קצת מלודרמטי מדי בשבילי. הנועזות והקריפיות הפתיעו אותי, לא היה לי מושג שדיברו וחשבו כבר אז במונחים האלה. אבל בעיקר בעיקר, העברית שלו, עברית של 1920 ואולי עברית שייחודית רק לו:
אותו רגע ראה עצמו כמנודח, כמוצא מכלל המסייעים לקיומו של עולם. ככל אלו שאינם מסוגלים לעבודה גסה מפאת העדר הכוחות הגופניים, ראה דווקא בזו את הדרך לסיפוקו השלם של אדם
כל דבר שאף עכשיו אל תכלית קבועה. החיים שוב לא היו נבוכים ומגששים במחשך, כפי שנדמה עד הנה. הם נעשו גלויים, בהירים, הוצב להם גבול קרוב ונתפס לעין.

הטעות היא אולי בזה - תפס מחדש חוט מחשבותיו - שקיווה פעם למנוחה, לחיים שקטים ונורמליים כאחד האדם - ומכאן כל האכזבה. מלכתחילה לא צריך היה להשלות נפשו בשווא! הוא - ונחת רוח! יש בני אדם שמתחילת ברייתם נועדו לייסורים, והוא אחד מהם.

Gurdweil is een ietwat neurotische, Joodse schrijver uit Wenen die op dag trouwt (van verliefd worden op lijkt weinig sprake te zijn) met barones Thea. Deze vrouw blijkt al snel een serpent eersteklas die Gurdweil treitert en kleineert. Tegen alle adviezen van zijn vrienden in blijft hij uit een combinatie van masochisme en angst toch bij haar, met alle desastreuze gevolgen van dien. Gedurende hun huwelijk leeft hij daarnaast continu in geldnood en zwerft hij veel door de straten van Wenen.
Huwelijksleven is een prachtige verkenning van ellende en krankzinnigheid die opbouwt naar een geslaagde finale omdat beide mogelijke eindes dankzij de steeds extremere waanzin van Gurdweil geloofwaardig en goed zouden zijn. Met name zijn dromen en visioenen zijn geweldige passages die aan Kafka doen denken. Ook speelt de stad Wenen een fraaie rol omdat zijn omzwervingen in veel levendige details worden beschreven en vanwege het feit dat Wenen zich nu en dan met het verhaal lijkt te bemoeien in de vorm van bijvoorbeeld de wind die de kop opsteekt op bepaalde punten. Met Thea zet Vogel ook een onvergetelijke antagonist neer. Vrijwel alles wat uit haar mond komt is een onredelijk commando en haar acties zouden Immortan Joe doen blozen.

I was so interested in the depiction of Viennese life. Poverty seemingly no barrier between shoemakers, writers, doctors and baronesses. Lots of shopping for food (no fridges) and going out to the cinema (no television) and hanging out in cafés. There is such a strong sense of friendship and community, despite hardship. I don't know if that would have been a uniquely Jewish feeling. Gurdweill, despite his intense introspection, was astonishingly self-deceived. '...a man to deceive himself into believing that everything is as it should be, when nothing at all is as it should be! Not the least little thing!'
Maybe it's just me, but when I read a story like this, written by and about pre-WW2 Jews, I am so saddened by the pending horror and the decimation of their culture.

This wonderfully horrific book is to the psychology of abusive relationships what Crime and Punishment was to the psychology of a criminal. This is no hyperbole. A dark and haunting tale of a Jewish man finding himself continuously abused by his Christian wife, both physically and mentally, without an ability to ever leave her, that could perhaps also serve as a clever allegory to the position the Jewish community found itself in while living in 1930's Europe.
I can't recommend this book enough, and also can't help but wonder what other great novels Vogel could've written had he not been killed in a Nazi concentration camp during the second World War.

A surprisingly good book, especially because it was originally written in Hebrew in Europe as early as 1928. Fascinating psychology and excellent writing.

This was an interesting read although incredibly depressing. I enjoyed the depiction of Vienna and the frequent references to Viennese café culture! At some points the narrative felt clumsy which I inferred to be the fault of the translator rather than Vogel.

È un romanzo particolare, molto avanti sui tempi e di mentalità apertissima. Il protagonista mi ha fatto provare di tutto l'ho detestato l'ho amato l'ho capito l'ho rifiutato l'ho giudicato a volte mi veniva da trattarlo come faceva Thea e molte altre volte l'avrei voluto trattare come faceva Lotti, riesce a suscitare simpatia antipatia rabbia comprensione, è quello che si dice un personaggio riuscito vivo reale assolutamente umano. David Vogel non lo conoscevo, ho scoperto questo autore leggendo il libro Corpi speciali di Francesca d'Aloja e mi ha talmente incuriosito che ho voluto leggerlo subito. Ne è valsa davvero la pena.

Married life is a beautiful book full of description that transports you to Vienna. It's characters are few, but they really paint a sad and sorry picture of unfolding events.
Beautifully written by David Vogel, although a little erratic and frustrating at times, it is a lovely literary piece.
Well enjoyed and the type of book that given a few years I would love to revisit and read through again.

Een boeiende roman die weken op mijn nachtkastje lag. De hoofdstukken zijn net lang genoeg om voor het slapen gaan te lezen. Elke dag greep ik er naar, benieuwd hoe het verder zou gaan met de meelijwekkende maar tegelijk ook irritante Rudolf Gurdweill.
Deze Gurdweill is schrijver, leeft een bohemnienachtig bestaan, maar komt de barones Thea tegen en binnen een mum van tijd besluiten ze te trouwen. Die beslissing zal rampzalig uitpakken. Meer kan ik niet verklappen, maar dit kan wel gezegd worden: de wijze waarop Gurdweill zich door haar laat koeieneren, wekte bij mij niet bepaald sympathie voor de hoofdpersoon. Tegelijk is zijn ik-zwakte ook tragisch.
David Vogel beschrijft hem als een individu dat willoos drijft in de stroming en kolken van het grote stadsleven van Wenen. Vogel trekt de lezer het leven zijn hoofdpersoon in en maakt hem deel van zijn omzwervingen - vaak met detail voor adressen en huisnummers. Je wordt even medebewoner van het voororlogse Wenen.
Ik kon me niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat de verhouding van Gurdweill en zijn vrouw óók kan staan voor de opkomst van het nazisme - iets wat de vertaler in zijn nawoord ook aanstipt.
Vogel was een geassimileerde Jood die - wonderlijk genoeg - in het Hebreeuws schreef.

Angosciante. a fine libro devo ancora fare chiarezza nelle emozioni che mi ha suscitato. è lei una stronza o lui un inetto? in ogni caso un libro coraggioso, scritto in un'epoca difficile per un autore di nazionalità ebrea. sembra quasi che Thea, la moglie aguzzina, impersonifichi la Vienna "nazista", un amore distorto, che non si riesce a smettere di provare. Angoscianti le "ruminazioni" mentali del protagonista che fanno partecipare il lettore del vortice di follia in cui pian piano si inabissa.

הדמויות מעניינות, הכתיבה יפה (גם אם ארכאית). התאור של יהודי וינה בין המלחמות מרתק - גם בגלל שאתה יודע (וכאן יש לך יתרון הן על הדמויות והן על הסופר), שזו קהילה שעומדת רגע לפני החורבן.

I loved this book , despite it was written in complicate, "old style" Hebrew language.
התוודאתי לקיומו של הספר הזה כאשר התנדבתי בבית חולים, הןא היה אחד הספרים בספריה המקומית. נאמר לי שזה ספר יפה , שזה אחד הספרים הקלאסיים שנכתבו בעברית וגם - שאני לא אצליח לקרוא אותו בגלל שעברית שלו קשה מדי. אני לא פוחדת מאתגרים ודווקא בגלל זה רציתי לקרוא אותו.
חבל שעכשיו אני לא צריכה לעשות פסיכומטרי בעברית - הייתי מפציצה :)

I wanted to love this book, and for brief moments I did, but on the whole I just wanted to get through it to reach a conclusion. I did not like either of the central characters, felt it was repetitive in its nature, and overall a sad story without much purpose.
