Blind Faith by Judith Pella is a romance novel that takes place in the late twentieth century in northern California. The main character is Irene, who was recently divorced to her then husband Greg. She had two kids with Greg, and now they live with Irene. Greg has had a bad past, and after the two got divorced, Irene felt that she could never love someone again after Greg’s lies have made her lose trust in men. All of a sudden, Greg dies and some suspect he was murdered. Shortly before his death, he contacted his long-lost brother Joel, who is blind. Joel is surprised to hear that he had a brother, and he searches deeper into the death of Greg. He ends up running into Irene, and they start to catch the feelings of the beginning of a relationship. Irene then is torn between her distrust for men and her interest in Joel.
The character of Joel is very well set up, due to him having conflict in multiple different areas. After Joel finds out about his biological brother, he also finds out about his dad. Joel wants to meet his dad, but has trouble doing so. The other conflict is his feelings for Irene. He isn’t sure if he should pursue a relationship with Irene in the wake of the events occurring.
Something noteworthy about Blind Faith is the plot. The book is written as a romance novel, but it also borrows aspects from the genres Mystery and Drama. The ending is very unexpected, and really brings out the mysterious portions of this book.
One can find this book interesting, even if they had no interest in reading about romance. There are many aspects of this book that someone looking for a fiction novel will notice and appreciate. The ending is unexpected and also left with a lot of gaps to fill, which can be a downside for the reader. Vocabulary in the text is not advanced and is easy to understand.
