Murray was Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Murray became a noted missionary leader. His father was a Scottish Presbyterian serving the Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa, and his mother had connections with both French Huguenots and German Lutherans. This background to some extent explains his ecumenical spirit. He was educated at Aberdeen University, Scotland, and at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After ordination in 1848 he served pastorates at Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town, and Wellington. He helped to found what are now the University College of the Orange Free State and the Stellenbosch Seminary. He served as Moderator of the Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church and was president of both the YMCA (1865) and the South Africa General Mission (1888-1917), now the Africa Evangelical Fellowship.

He was one of the chief promoters of the call to missions in South Africa. This led to the Dutch Reformed Church missions to blacks in the Transvaal and Malawi. Apart from his evangelistic tours in South Africa, he spoke at the Keswick and Northfield Conventions in 1895, making a great impression. upon his British and American audiences. For his contribution to world missions he was given an honorary doctorate by the universities of Aberdeen (1898) and Cape of Good Hope(1907).

Murray is best known today for his devotional writings, which place great emphasis on the need for a rich, personal devotional life. Many of his 240 publications explain in how he saw this devotion and its outworking in the life of the Christian. Several of his books have become devotional classics. Among these are Abide in Christ, Absolute Surrender, With Christ in the School of Prayer, The Spirit of Christ and Waiting on God.

I began this book during Lent hoping to add a little devotional reading to the season but I had no idea how gripping this book would become and how it would transfix me for months.

What I found remarkable about this book were the layers of deep truths about something I had not stopped to give much thought. Rather than being a morbid journey, reading about Christ's blood, I was filled with joy and unceasing delight as I pondered the precious gift of Christ's blood.

There are several things in particular that I will never get over. The first was rather a surprise. As a teacher of Old Testament I have understood the need of the blood sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins but never gave much thought to the cleansing part of the law. I figured that was for "back then". But Murray talks about the need not just for forgiveness (the blood on the altar) a work done FOR us, but that there must be a work done IN us, which the cleansing laws clearly reveal. We need something to make us experience cleansing. I never realized the import of this two part process.

Another fresh thought was that I never thought about the implications of someone touching a dead body and the fact that they would be unclean for seven days. I never stopped to think what that said about death. "Death, as punishment for sin, made everyone who came in association with it unclean." Death was so repugnant to God, so outside of His plan, that you could not even touch someone without being contaminated. I suppose living in the post-cross era I forget how horrible death was. It was the chief result of sin.

But there is more. Clear statements such as this, "God's objective is to abolish sin in our lives." were so astounding. God wants us to have NO SIN IN OUR LIVES! It is not a distant hope but a present reality. The unbroken fellowship that God desires with each one of us is a real possibility because of Christ's work on the Cross. "Sanctification was the great object of the sufferings of Christ." He didn't say, "salvation" but "sanctification". This is remarkable stuff.

Another surprising fact that hit me full between the eyes, was that Christ suffered the horrors of the cross because of his love for ME! Not just out of obedience, or love for the Father, but FOR ME! I think I am quick to think of John 3:16 about the Father's love, but to think that Jesus loved ME so much that he gave himself willingly, has been a thought that has blessed me anew. I know Jesus loves me but he LOVED me so much when he was on the earth that he daily renounced himself to take up the cross for me. "The Cross is the full revelation of true love...The Cross tells us that He loved us so much that this love surmounted every difficulty-the curse of sin, the hostility of man, the wrath of God....What we need is a proper view of Jesus and of His all-conquering eternal love."

Then the chapter on the blood of Christ and how it relates to the world was also mind blowing. Murray tells us that with His blood He purchased every man from every tribe, language people and nation. Thus we must take Him to the nations because the power of the blood has far-reaching effects on the world. That blood gives us the courage we need to enter enemy territory and also the love needed to go and take the Good news to others.

I really treasure this book as one of those life-changing books. It has renewed my faith, my heart and my love for the Savior who has done so much for me.

Amazing!

I will never be the same after reading this book regarding the blood of Jesus Christ. Amazing revelation given to Murray to share that there is so much more than His blood cleaning us.
