Applause is in order for the amount of details weaved into the 24 page story-line format. The most impressive nuance was the presentation of the widely varied opinions of the many factions involved concerning his person and the issues he was involved in.

GIVE BOOKER'S BOOK TO A PRECOCIOUS YOUNGSTER or force it on a reluctant reader who can take inspiration from a legendary example of ambition, hard work, pragmatism, selflessness and future-mindedness. An expert at focusing on the approach and presentation of a goal that best suits the needs of the cause even when it lost him respect from so many who he was fighting for! They didn't know what he was constantly doing secretly and successfully for their causes because he was brilliantly aware of who-needed-to-hear-what in order to get the best results- he was nothing short of a political mastermind who thrived by using enemies like marionettes! He needed to be a public apologist of segregation to be able to get support/influence and tremendous amounts of money out of those who would otherwise be using money/influence against his aggressively anti-segregationist cause!

I haven't read much about Booker T. Washington other than what is covered in history books, so this graphic novel chapter book made an interesting read. I knew a little about conflicting views between Washington and other African Americans such as W.E.B. Du Bois. What I didn't realize is how Washington acted behind the scenes by paying for lawyers to bring court cases against injustices such as voting laws that made it impossible for blacks to vote in southern states. I also did not know that he was the first African American to to eat at the White House (as the guest of Teddy Roosevelt). This book also presents a bit of history about the Tuskegee Institute. #bookaday
