Galen Avery Rowell (August 23, 1940 – August 11, 2002) was a wilderness photographer, adventure photojournalist and mountaineer. Born in Oakland, California, he became a full-time photographer in 1972.
Photographer Rowell has traveled to many spectacular locations, and he has brought us many stunning images for the readers of his books to enjoy.
The book's editor writes that this 1989 book is a "mid-career retrospective of a great photographer's greatest pictures." And indeed, great they are!
A lot of climbing involved here--Mt. McKinley, El Capitan, and many steep rock faces. Included here is one of Rowell's most iconic photos, a rainbow terminating at the Potala Palace in Tibet, the home of the Dalai Lama.
Rowell died with his wife in a California plane crash in 2002 at age 61.
