About the author

Dr. Linda Seger has a Th.D. in Drama and Theology, and created her script consulting business based on her dissertation project about the elements needed to make a script work. She explored the integration of Drama and Spirituality during her five years in seminary. She holds three M.A. degrees: Drama from Northwestern University, Religion and the Arts from Pacific School of Religion, and Feminist Theology from Immaculate Heart College Center.
She has a broad religious background. She grew up Lutheran and did several years of spiritual seeking in her 20s. She became a Born-Again Christian and then joined the Quakers (Society of Friends) and is a member of The Colorado Springs Friends Meeting. Throughout the years, she has meditated at a Zen Buddhist center, attended New Age conferences, has done the spiritual exercises of Saint Ignacious, and has read and taken classes in the religions of the world.
Dr. Seger's thoughts about how spirituality influences her work:

“Many readers are surprised and even confused when they see I’m the most prolific writer in the area of screenwriting, an international screenwriting consultant and a screenwriting teacher. Yet, I also do theology/spiritual books. Some of this comes from having an M.A. In Drama, 2 M.A.s in theology and a ThD in Theology and Drama. They seem to be separate, but they are actually integrated.

Drama shines a light on the human condition. It explores the conflicts, struggles, doubts, uncertainties, and possibilities for transformation and redemption. Even secular drama deals with hope and goodness and the struggle for authenticity and love.

When I consult on scripts, I am trying to help the writer reach deeper into the truth about who we are as humans and what are our possibilities. When I write books on spirituality, I am doing the same thing – digging deeply into our experiences and struggles, and then shining the light of Scripture and theology on making some sense out of what we see and feel. I am trying to get at The Truth and to dig deep into our experiences. So, I never look for easy answers, and I don’t try to pigeonhole either our stories or our spirituality.”

کتاب رو بعد از ۱۶ سال دوباره خوندم. و خیلی چیزهاش برام جالب بود.
اول اینکه مثل خیلی کتاب‌های خلاقیت پرت‌وپلا کم نداشت اما برعکس خیلی‌ها نکات خوبی هم توش پیدا می‌شه. مهم‌ترین چیزی که داشت این بود که می‌گفت باید راه خودتون رو به مرور زمان پیدا کنید. اولین بار که کتاب زو خوندم، تازه‌کار بودم و خیلی چیزهاش رو جدی نگرفتم. حالا که برمیگردم به عقب می‌بینم در این ۱۶ سال دست‌وپا زدم و تونستم راه خودم رو پیدا کنم. زمان مناسب، شیوه‌ی مناسب و و و به مرور زمان قلق خودم دستم اومده

برام جالب بود که ۱۶ سال پیش زیر چه نکاتی خط می‌کشیدم. حالا تقریباً هیچکدوم اون نکات برام جالب نبودن و همه رو پاک کردم.

همچنان فکرمیکنم همه نمی‌تونن خلاق باشن. و این راه‌ها برای همه جواب نمی‌ده. اگر پتانسیل خلاقیت رو داشته‌باشید، کتاب ممکنه بهتون کمک کنه.

Si bien se plantea como un libro guía para avanzar en el proceso creativo de escritura, descansa demasiado en lo escrito en otros libros de la autora, por lo que hay conceptos que aquí no se abordan con la profundidad que creo necesaria. Tampoco se hace cargo del tiempo necesario para llevar a cabo todos los ejercicios que propone, por lo que a momentos hace que parezca más una conversación sobre diferentes métodos para potenciar la creatividad más que un programa esquematizado; que es lo que anuncia en un comienzo. Dicho lo anterior: me encantó y me llenó de ideas, sobre todo el capítulo 6.

Yo ya conocía la gran mayoría de tips y consejos que Linda Seger sugiere en este libro, pero nunca los había visto tan bien explicados, con ejemplos muy claros y ejercicios excelentes. A pesar de conocer toda esta teoría de antemano, me encontré resaltando y señalando varias frases y claves muy útiles. Este libro es realmente útil para quien quiera aprender a ser libretista, para los que ya lo son, y para la gente que se dedica a crear. Inclusive, ¡sus ejemplos y consejos son útiles para la vida real!

Es más, creo que Ryan Murphy usó sus ejemplos para crear dos de sus series (El caso O.J. Simpson y el caso Clinton-Lewinsky), ¿o será coincidencia que Linda Seger hablé de estos dos en específico cuando nos invita a revisar nuestra propia escala de valores?

Y muchas cosas parecen muy obvias, pero al llegar a la mesa de trabajo se pasan por encima con increíble facilidad. Es increíble ver el detalle en los pasos que Seger ha propuesto, para desarrollar una idea desde cero e irla alimentando hasta tener una solidez que satisfaga al autor. Porque tampoco es el libro mágico para vender películas en Hollywood, es solo una serie de recomendaciones de una persona muy experimentada para hacer la historia que tenemos en la mente... Que sea vendible o no es otra cosa de la que ni Seger ni este libro de encargarán.

Pero, en general, es un libro muy útil, que puede servir de inspiración al estar bloqueado, o para simplemente recordar cosas que se pierden en el camino de escribir con el ritmo de la televisión (todo es para YA). Es muy fácil de leer y seguir, muy cercano al lector con su forma de expresarse y lleno de historias personales, cosas que solo se aprenden trabajando.

Una de las frases más importantes y que quedó sonando en mi cabeza:

"El papel del guionista en la sociedad es más complicado por el hecho de que muchos guionistas no se respetan a sí mismos. Quieren que todo resulte fácil. No se toman en serio el proceso creativo. Copian, plagian y se quejan cuando un guion lleva más tiempo del que ellos creen que debería llevar."

An insightful book about writing and creativity, Making a Good Writer Great by Linda Seger dives into the inner workings of how a writer can elevate their craft. The book explores various topics that screenwriters and other writers can utilize to bring greater depth and meaning to their stories and characters.

The book offers a variety of creative exercises that can be done alone, with a partner, or in a writing group. These exercices can help writers who are stuck creatively find their pathway out of a slump or block.

I’ve had this book on my shelf since 1999, and I regret waiting over two decades to read it. Making a Good Writer Great is an excellent book that can help all levels of writer reach greater heights of creativity in their work.

Lleno de ejercicios prácticos sobre cómo abordar tu escritura desde un proceso creativo. Aunque no haya ninguno de ellos (en una primera lectura, porque el libro es para darle varias pasadas) aún, puede ser el "manual" o ensayo que más me haya inspirado de todos los que estoy leyendo en mi formación como guionista. Deseando echarle un guante a su otro libro: "Cómo convertir un buen guion en un guion excelente", que es su complementario.

Inspira aquellos que se les hace difícil seguir escribiendo guiones de ficción que tienen problemas de plots, personajes, etc.

Contiene bibliografía complementaria muy interesante.

An amazing book by an amazing author. It is filled with creative lessons, insight and examples. It's a psychological jaunt into the mind of the reader where Ms. Seager has found a way to tease everything creative, dramatic and imagined out of the mind of the writer and into the story.
