Holden's thesis is that we have allowed the accomplishments of the ancient Greeks to throw sand in our eyes. Their descendants are every bit as disorganized as the worst of the Balkan peoples (who, at the same time, they do not hesitate to disdain). I was surprised to first hear this opinion from Robert D. Kaplan in BALKAN GHOSTS, in which he recommended this book. Read it BEFORE you go to Greece on that vacation.

The book's author had filmed a documentary with the same title in Greece in 1964.
Obsolete. Nothing to do with today's reality.

An in-depth and thorough look into Greece, Greek and Greekness! Separated into cohesive chapters and sections, it works as a book you can dip into just for a specific chapter, or a whole read from the start. Sharing research and ideas on all area of life and topics, considering what Greekness is both inside and out, it is a fascinating (if occasionally heavy) read.
