Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, whose previous titles-such as the bestselling "Real Magic "and "Your Erroneous Zones"-have touched the lives of millions, now teaches listeners how to tap into the power of their higher selves and live each of their days, regardless of what they are. doing, with a greater sense of peace and fulfillment. Developing the sacred self, Dr. Dyer explains, brings an understanding of our place in the world and a sense of satisfaction in ourselves and others. In "Your Sacred Self, " Dr. Dyer offers a program that helps listeners establish a spirituallv-oriented, rather than an ego-oriented., approach to life. Step by step Dr. Dyer shows us how to progress from emotional awareness to psychological insight to spiritual alternatives in order to change our experience of life from the need to acquire to a sense of abundance; from a sense of one's self as sinful and inferior to a sense of one's self as divine; from a need to achieve and acquire to an awareness that detachment and letting go bring freedom. "Your Sacred Self" is art inspiring, hopeful, illuminating guide that can help everyone live a happier, richer, more meaningful life.
Wayne Walter Dyer was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer earned a Bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy, a Master’s degree in Psychology and an Ed.D. in Guidance and Counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time, with an estimated 100 million copies sold. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham H. Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show.
This is one of those books that you can pick up, flip to a random page, and immediately gain something personally from it. Although everything wasn't appealing, the parts that were worked wonders. This book really helped me in my college years when my mind would be racing about what major I was going to choose, who/how I wanted to be, or what I was going to do after I even graduated college! I would be racing about decisions that didn't even have to be made for 4 more years! The book really gives you tools and concrete examples of exactly how to control your thinking while helping you recognize that your thinking may be limited by the past, projections in the future that you have absolutely no control over, or what you think are ingrained beliefs within yourself, but in reality are beliefs you've never questions or challenged to form those in the first place.
If you have negative thoughts or beliefs the books helps you reflect on those and ultimately change them if you want to put in the time. Your awareness is taken to another level and you begin to realize that you are no better than anyone, but you are certainly just as good as anybody. I learned to stop comparing myself to others and fearing the next step or the next several steps and simply taking in each moment as it comes.
Reading Wayne W. Dyer's Your Sacred Self felt less like working through a book and more like sitting with a wise friend who knows how to bring calm to the noise in your mind. The heart of the book is simple yet powerful: Everyone carries a deeper, sacred self waiting beneath the chatter of ego and the pressures of the outside world. Dyer shows how to quiet that noise, step into this truer self, and live with more peace, clarity, and purpose.
There is something about the wisdom in these pages that lifts anxiety and replaces it with grounded faith. Dyer encourages the belief that a simple shift in perspective can unlock greater potential and confidence.
Your Sacred Self At the heart of Your Sacred Self is the idea that each of us has a divine, higher self beneath layers of ego and social conditioning. The ego keeps us tangled up in fear, self-doubt, and competitiveness, convincing us that we are separate and not enough. Dyer invites readers to recognize and quiet the voice of ego so they can connect with their sacred self, an inner identity that knows only love, abundance, and unity. The book lays out a practical path, guiding readers to turn away from stress and comparison and move toward genuine peace and fulfillment.
Wisdom memes I first discovered Dyer after listening to a Deepak Chopra audiobook, and I was quickly drawn to his gift for transforming profound ideas into what I like to call "wisdom memes". These short, memorable phrases distill complex truths into something you can carry with you, whether you are in a moment of reflection or caught in a storm. One that stands out is: "If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change".
Witness your thoughts Dyer also describes the practice of becoming the "witness" to our own thoughts. Instead of being swept away by anger, fear, or doubt, he suggests stepping back and observing thoughts as if they were clouds passing through the sky. That image has lingered with me because it is so simple and effective. I have tried it during stressful moments, and it genuinely creates a sense of space and calm.
Across many traditions, the practice of witnessing thoughts appears in strikingly similar forms. In Christian mysticism, the "inner witness of the Spirit" encourages stepping back from distractions and watching the movements of the heart in God's light. In Sufism, seekers learn mushahada, the art of observing thoughts as veils passing while resting in the Divine. Hindu Vedanta speaks of the Sakshi, the eternal witness untouched by the mind and world. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar compares consciousness to the sky and thoughts to clouds, encouraging meditation and breathwork to cultivate this inner observer. Daoist philosophy likens the mind to a mirror that reflects all things without clinging, teaching harmony through observation. Japanese Zen practice invites one to sit and simply watch thoughts arise and dissolve, embodying emptiness and non attachment.
Each tradition, through its own language, points to the same liberating truth: Thoughts are fleeting, but the witness remains steady, spacious, and free.
Wayne Dyer's writing feels like stepping into a quiet sanctuary after being trapped in the chaos of your own mind. When overthinking spins out of control and worry feels endless, his words create a space where the noise softens. He reminds you that you do not have to keep exhausting yourself by climbing the endless staircase of success or running in the rat race that never really ends. Instead, he offers gentle guidance that helps you pause, breathe, and see that peace is already within you. His teachings become a kind of refuge, a place where anxiety loosens its grip and you can remember that life is not only about striving but also about being present, calm, and whole.
Basically, 1) the nagging voice in our heads is Ego, which likes to keep us generally poisoned with bad emotions: fear of failing, judging others to make ourselves feel bigger, competing for fancy things to prove our worth, and feeling ugly/fat/stupid so we stay locked in our ego-prison. The premise of the book is that 2) we are all made of the same energy particles and are therefore, divine. Like in yoga, "namaste" means "the divine in me salutes the divine in you" or the like. So this metaphysics, not religion. In summary, if we can silence our ego and tap into our higher selves, we can manifest our own blissful universe (aka the law of attraction).
Below are some of my notes from the book - I left out a lot of Ego description b/c I've already read "A New Earth" by Eckart Tolle, which describes in great detail the persistence of the Ego.
Many of the notes below are paraphrased.
"God" here is not a big man in the sky. God is the divinity within each of us, the energy that binds us to each other and the earth, our higher selves. ______________________
Each day, ask "How can I serve?"
Let go of everything that you have been told is impossible or unrealistic and allow yourself the freedom to make your own contract with God about what is possible for you.
Release your doubt. Know.
Faith is an inner knowing and capacity to see God in everything, including myself.
The invisible faith (becomes an invisible energy,) a power that was previously hidden from you... I have used this kind of faith to swim across a lake in 45-degree water without experiencing the sensation of cold. I type for hours and see poems and chapters emerge, without writers block, because I know that i am not alone. The cosmic energy is there within me for my use in fulfilling my personal destiny.
I have often had precisely the right book or article show up in the mail when I was stuck at a particular place in my writing. Frequently I have visualized the appearance of a particular writer in my life by concentrating on his or her words, and the magically had them appear in my life.
Become the witness: observe your feelings, thoughts, cravings, and pain. watch them go by, and then let them go.
As you cultivate the new awareness you will find yourself enjoying the silence even more than when you used to seek out the noise as your companion. Cultivating the witness with introduce you to yourself not as the doer but as the observer of the doer. You will come to welcome this realm as a respite for the hurry-up world that you have been living in.
"In my world, nothing ever goes wrong." Nisargadatta Maharaj describing that it is all part of a divine design. We should relax and let it run its course.
Rather than engage in confrontations, be the witness. "When you have the choice between being right and being kind, always choose kind."
Perhaps try recapitulation - recapturing the lost energy of your past. Read Taisha Abelar's "The Sorcerer's Crossing" for a detailed 'how to'
Shut down your inner dialogue (it's the same shit over and over anyway) In order to understand my mind, I use the metaphor of a pond with a limitless depth. I do not call this metaphor or the practice of it "meditation" because there are countless methods of meditation practice. This is a visualization of shutting down the inner dialogue. The surface is where all the noise is. It's where the ice freezes, rain pelts, wind makes waves, and junk/leaves/bugs collects. This is the chatter of finances, deadlines, health, children, appointments, shopping lists, violence in the Middle East, the book you are reading, traffic, car repairs, your headache, etc. Level 2: just below the surface: a storm is still visible, but its presence not felt in the same way. Drop a pebble from the surface - it is like a thought. Thoughts in level 2 are being analyzed. Level 3: Pebble is well below the surface, the chatter is lessening, so is the need to analyze everything. You are allowing your mind to see the flow of how things are all connected and held together. Level 4: Stillness in Bliss Level 5: the Field of All Possibilities.
Rather than focusing on a single thought, I am able to put my inner awareness on the space that exists between my thoughts. This space is a mental formless thing, just as all inner considerations are. Only the focus of your awareness can shift away from a single though and go to that space between.
the pond metaphor works as you begin to shut down the ceaseless, monotonous inner dialogue. As the pebbles drop, be the witness. Observe compassionately. The storms will continue in your life, as they do on the pond. Serenity will no longer be defined as freedom from storms but will e known as peace during that wild weather.
Take 5 minutes to focus on nothing when life gets crazy. Use your breath to focus. Or your heartbeat. put your awareness between your thoughts, or visualize running through a crowd - using the gaps between the people as your focus. Learn to meditate. call your local Transcendental Mediation center In meditation, use a candle or a rose or a tree for focus (without naming it. just be). Do not carry a rose to our beloved because in it is already embodied a message which unlike our language of words, cannot be analyzed.
Free the Higher Self from the Ego
Ego tricks you into thinking you are better than others by judging others to be less than, whether physically, spiritually, fashionably or otherwise. Just because you've begun this higher self practice, does not make you better than others. You're all made of the same stuff and you're all experiencing the human journey.
Ego behaviors: confronting and arguing, competing and comparing, chasing and striving, worrying, seeking attention, giving yourself deadlines and pressure, accumulating and acquiring, chattering to yourself, gossip, and being offended. Also, putting yourself down with self-deprecating statements causing you to shy away from risks. By doing so, you are agreeing with the ego. Only your ego is holding you back.
"The fear that is a substitute for love is simply a fear of being unacceptable. Virtually all fears can be traced directly back to self-esteem. If you love yourself, you will be able to transform your fears with love rather than allow them to direct your life."
"When fear is released, the focus of your life shifts form the vehicles of your expression -- the approval seeking and avoidance of rejection -- to the divine you and what the authentic you is expressing. "
"Your ego wants you to believe that you are unacceptable and will gleefully assist you in creating an image to prove that is so. Manifestations like obesity and personal slovenliness often are fear-based projections of yourself."
"By hanging onto the fears of your insufficiency, you can avoid taking any risks."
"Your fear driven ego will try to convince you that love is not the answer. You will notice thoughts about proving something to others, about shopping and owning grand things, or about bills that can't be" paid with love... "This is ego trying to put you into scarcity consciousness, where fear reigns." (224)
Replace turmoil with Peace Be sympathetic, release fear and guilt and replace them with love, forgiveness and kindness. In in doubt as to what to say, be silent. Do not fear rejection. Resist the need to boast and/or talk about yourself. Stop exaggerating. Taking credit is unimportant. Resist judgment and fear of being homeless, abused, mentally dysfunctional, ill, poor, etc.
Produce to distribute, feed before you eat, give before you take, think of others before yourself.
Remind yourself that "I am enough", forgive yourself, notice acts of kindness others do rather than their wrongdoings, remind yourself how much you have to give, show others that verbal assaults are meaningless.
Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass: I exist as I am, that is enough If no other in the world be aware I sit content, And if each and all be aware I sit content.
One world is aware, and by far the largest to me, and that is myself. And whether I come to my own today or in ten thousand or ten million years, I can cheerfully take it now, or with equal cheerfulness, I can wait.
When you have the awareness that the divine in me is the same as the divine in you, you are able to radiate/send live and kindness without noticing appearances. On the path of the sacred way, you experience that force flowing through you and others -- even if the others don't recognize it in themselves.
When you need more of anything to feel positive about yourself, you are always in a race without a finish line, and you cannot achieve spiritual bliss. The way out of this trap of self-repudiation is to recognize that the earth habitat is not your complete home. Edgar Allan Poe reminds us: "All that we see or seem / Is but a dream within a dream." When you know your lifetime is a dream within a larger dream, you can stop using outer appearances as a meaningful gauge.
Quit striving: The need to strive for answers... will be replaced by a patient knowing that divine design will reveal what the next step along the path of your sacred quest will be. In mediation, I say, "I am leaving it in your hands. My ego is pushing but it just doesn't feel right, so I will silently wait to see in what direction I am to go. Use me as you see fit."
The Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair; hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may never seek so much To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love with all my soul. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life.
I've read this quite a few times over the years and find it to be an enlightening as well as helpful book. So grateful that Dr. Dyer wrote so many books before he passed because his wisdom was so spot-on and his insights into human nature were just what I have needed at certain times in my life.
I have had this book for years and always picked it up but never came around to reading it. That I feel is because the time was just not right. This is one of those books either you connect with and understand or you don't. It is an interesting philosophy on life and I found a lot of it relevant to myself. I enjoyed reading this one, it really gets you thinking outside of the box. A great read for those seeking spiritual growth. Five out of Five Gold Stars.
The first two parts of the book (up to 'The Four Keys of Awareness') were great. Then it got into Transcending our Ego Identities which became a lot of Ego vs Our Higher self and the war with our Ego. It made me question 'so why do we even have an Ego in the first place' (which I answered for myself. While I believe we need one, I agree we should put it aside to live with our higher self).
Pros: I did earmark a lot of pages in the first 2 parts. And the examples of how we can rise to our higher selves in every day life helped to put the points in perspective.
Cons: the remaining chapters I felt were put there to fill pages. And there was also a lot of reference to other books. I think the book could have been condensed and made straight to the point.
A wonderful step by step guide to the higher self, to know God, to know oneself, to know the falseness and authenticity present in us. Dyer gives a new definition to an individual. What I really loved about this book was its straightforwadness and its practicality. Not only is it a brilliant addition to the spiritual or self-help shelves, but it is a book to be always kept with oneself and always go back to it when your life is in turmoil.
This is a great rallying call for people to stop focusing so much on the external but to spend more time looking at the internal elements of our being, our missions, beliefs, inner dialogue etc. It is particularly relevant in this day and age of social media and consumerism together with all the distractions that come with it. I found the exercises in particular quite fascinating and refreshing.
Very revealing book which elaborates on the subject of self actualization. Dr Dyer uses many practical examples to explain why- and how you can rid yourself of ego-based behavior.
Dr. Dyer is a follower of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj, one of the founding fathers of the Advaita Vedanta movement.
“We are never alone God is always with us “ another phenomenal read by the late Dr Wayne Dyer . This book reminds me not to identify with my accolades , possessions and occupation; but by spirit and that we are all connected by spirit. Dyer emphasizes the danger of relying on the false narratives of the ego which will tell us we are separate from one another, inferior, and that we are to compare ourselves to one another. He reminds us that we are created to love and be loved. Truly a liberating read that reminds us to be present and genuinely enjoy life and those in it. Highly recommend and easily 5 stars.

I started reading this book, and by the end of Part 1 I gave up. This book is bossy, impractical and illogical. The ideology, he talks about, of inner sacred self and everything happening to us is what we deserve, is a bit cruel. I really appreciate Wayne's work in general. he wrote some real good stuff when it comes to self-healing and inner awareness. But to follow him is not an easy task. I tend to drift a lot so this book was a total waste for me. The guidance is in an ordering tone. Do this, do that. Don't do this, and don't do that. Just Kill your ego and be a selfless human, well guess what - it doesn't call Human, it calls angel then. Not a very fresh start I wanna have for 2017.
I saw Wayne Dyer on an infomercial once and was pretty impressed with some of the things he was saying. Hence, I bought this book. I learned a great deal from it and looked at particular things in different ways than I had in the past. Parts of the book seemed boring to me but for the most part I enjoyed it.
This book will help you understand so much about transcending into our higher selves, and not giving in to fear. We all need to know how to do this. I really enjoyed reading about this, and I would recommend all people should educate themselves on these principles. We are stronger when we set our hearts on love.
I was mesmerized by the beauty and wisdom in this book.Wayne Dyer takes us on a journey where the spirit triumph over ego. This book will serve as an extremely valuable guide to all those who seek the exultation of the spiritual experience and who value total freedom as the ultimate goal of life.
A good read for those who seek guidance on their journey of spiritual enlightenment or those who feel lost and confused engrossed in the daily grind of this life.
Imagine this scene if you will. Two babies are in utero confined to the wall of their mother’s womb, and they are having a conversation. For the sake of clarity we’ll call these twins Ego and Spirit. Spirit says to Ego,”I know you are going to find this difficult to accept, but I truly believe there is life after birth.”
Ego responds, “Don’t be ridiculous. Look around you. this is all there is. why must you always be thinking about something beyond this reality? Accept your lot in life. Make yourself comfortable and forget about all of this life-after-birth nonsense.”
Spirit quiets down for a while, but her inner voice won’t allow her to remain silent any longer. “Ego, now don’t get mad, but I have something else to say. I also believe that there is a Mother.” “A Mother!”Ego guffaws. “How can you be so absurd? You’ve never seen a Mother. Why can’t you accept that this is all there is? The idea of a Mother. Why can’t you accept that this is all there is? The idea of a Mother is crazy. You are here alone with me.This is your reality. Now grab hold of that cord. Go into your corner and stop being so silly. Trust me, there is no Mother.”
Spirit reluctantly stops her conversation with Ego, but her restlessness soon gets the better of her. “Ego,” she implores, “please listen without rejecting my idea. Somehow I think that those constant pressures we both feel, those movements that make us so unconfortable sometimes, that continual respositioning and all of that closing in that seems to be taking place as we keep growing, is getting us ready for a place of glowing light, and we will experience it very soon.”
“Now I know you are absolutely insane,” replies Ego. “All you’ve ever known is darkness. You’ve never seen light. How can you even contemplate such an idea? Those movements and pressures you feel are your reality. You are a distinct separate being. This is your journey. Darkness and pressures and a closed-in feeling are what life is all about. You’ll have to fight it as long as you live. Now grab your cord and please stay still.”
Spirit relaxes for a while, but finally she can contain herself no longer. “Ego, I have only one more thing to say and then I’ll never bother you again.”
“Go ahead,” Ego responds impatiently.
“I believe all of these pressures and all of this discomfort is not only going to bring us to a new celestial light, but when we experience it, we are going to meet Mother face-to-face and know an ecstasy that is beyond anything we have ever experienced up until now.”
“You really are crazy, Spirit. Now I’m truly convinced of it.”
This book you are holding in your hands is a literal interpretation of that metaphor, which I’ve adapted from a story told by Henri J.M.Nouwen. It is my attempt to introduce you to that glowing celestial light and to let you know the wonder of having your sacred self triumph over the demands of the ego self, which wants more than anything to hold you back.
"In this liberating and enriching book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer teaches us how to tap into the power of our higher selves and live each day, regardless of what we do, with a greater sense of peace and fulfillment.
"Your Sacred Self reveals a three-step program to help us understand our place in the world and develop a sense of satisfaction with ourselves and others. Step by step, we can change the way we experience life--moving from our insatiable need for more, to an awareness of abundance; from a sense of ourselves as sinful and inferior, to an acceptance of ourselves as divine; from our hunger to achieve, to the detachment that brings true freedom.
"Inspiring, uplifting, and illuminating, Your Sacred Self can bring the profound words of this unique teacher and guide into our lives and our hearts." ~~back cover
Surprisingly, this book just wasn't resonating with me, so I abandoned it and perhaps will come back to it later.
Reading this ended up being way more intense than I was anticipating. I listened to it in audiobook format and was planning to use it to fall asleep since it is read by Dyer himself in his calm and soothing voice. However, this proved to be difficult as it stirred up powerful emotions and gave me so much to think about. Dyer’s words are soothing and encouraging, but also challenged me to think about the beliefs I hold and what I really know with certainty.
I would highly recommend this for anyone interested in dispelling fear and doubt from their life, detaching from the ego, and aligning with their higher self. Dyer assures the reader that there is no such thing as failure, that you are always on the right path. This is a hopeful and much needed message as it gave me so much space to reflect on the things I’ve been afraid of, the suffering I’ve gone through, and the beliefs I’ve held because of it. By the end of this read I could feel myself settling settling into a more peaceful state.
Work at being content with who you are rather than pleasing others by being inauthentic.
Direct your attention to what pleases you.
Judge not.
Develop a forgery to go along with your memory.
Treat everyone as if they are part of the tribe you love belonging to. Don't mentally note their differences. Carry an inner determination to see others as just as much a part of you on a spiritual level as is your child or your spouse. Create an affirmation expressing the idea that you are my brother my sister you are a part of my us there are no more thems my life.
Try being the witness, rise above the temptation to make someone else wrong, and instead watch yourself and your opponent from the witness's perspective.
The big secret: you are not your problems, your frustrations, or even your physical life, you are that which is noticing at all.
In every moment of your life you have the option to choose peace for yourself the ego wants you in a constant state of agitation to keep you from embracing your higher self convinces you that if you are not always on edge you can't grow but you must keep in mind that experience this inner turmoil is a choice that you have made by allowing your false self to dominate your life when you make the choice for peace you are literally allowing God into your life.
I did skim read this book as over the years I've read many books very similar.
Though the many wonderful paragraphs and teaching in this book really makes me miss the late Wayne W Dyer. I'm a bit sad that I didn't read this book sooner as it has been sitting on my shelf of years.
A wonderful book If you are wanting to explore ways to investigate your higher self. Many wonderful tips and hints though that can also be found in his "Change your thoughts change your life book". Very similar in content.
There is several pieces of great advice in this book if you are wanting to learn about having peace in your life no matter the situation. There are several ideas that may be too far from either accepted norms. I found some too far for me.
I enjoyed it. Pick and choose what works best for you and what may not.
A good book for slowing down and coming back to yourself and the peace of your own presence. "Simplify simplify simplify. Examine carefully how much of your life energy is used in pursuit of what you don't need. Practice one day at a time, the idea of saying no to more.. no I will not pursue that item."
This is a must-read book for people who want to grow personally and spiritually. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer straightforwardly and practically teaches us that happiness is not outside but inside ourselves and what steps to take to progress and eliminate the destructive ego that prevents us from living the absolute truth.
