Sandy Curtis lives on Queensland’s Central Coast, not far from the beach where she loves to walk and mull over the intricate plots in her novels. Her husband says he doesn’t know how she keeps it all in her head, and her friends think she must be far more devious than she appears.

Actually, after having dealt with the chaos involved in rearing three children, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and a kookaburra (teaching it to fly was murder), creating complex characters, fast-paced action and edge-of-your-seat suspense is a breeze for Sandy.

At fourteen she wrote a story about a pickpocket who steals a wallet from an off-duty cop. To make sure her details were authentic, she wrote to Police Headquarters asking them about fingerprints. Her mother received a phone call wanting confirmation the query was genuine, and as Sandy hadn’t told her about the letter (or the story), she nearly had a heart attack thinking her daughter was in trouble with the law.

Sandy’s query resulted in an invitation to tour Police Headquarters with her teacher and several schoolfriends and meet the Police Commissioner. That’s when she learned that although the pen might be mightier than the sword, it does nothing to imbue self-confidence in an extremely nervous fourteen-year-old who had to shake the hand of Queensland’s top cop.

“All my pocket money and birthday money went on purchasing books,” Sandy says. “I devoured them. My aunt and uncle used to let me borrow their Saturday Evening Post (American version) and Reader’s Digest. In one Saturday Evening Post I read a story called “The Answer” by Philip Wylie, about a nuclear explosion which kills an angel and the Defence Force’s efforts to prove it was ‘really an alien being’. I was so impressed with the story I decided that one day I would become a story-teller like Philip Wylie.”

Interviewers often ask Sandy to describe her normal writing day. “Normal is when the chaos in my life subsides to frantic rather than frenzied. I once told a friend that I must have a chaos attractor glued on my forehead and she said that creativity hovers on the edge of chaos, to which I replied that I’d long ago fallen off the edge into the middle.”

Her various occupations, from private secretary to assistant to a Bore Licensing Inspector, as well as hitch-hiking around New Zealand and learning to parachute, have given Sandy lots of people and research skills. It’s the paperwork going feral in her office she has trouble with.

Daniel Brand couldn't quite believe his eyes as he passed by the gallery. Daniel hadn't seen Kirri Smith for a few years. Daniel had fallen in love with Kirri back in New Orleans two years ago and she was going to become his wife that was until the day she vanished. Daniel spent countless hours and days as well as hiring a private investigator in the hope to find her, but there was no trace of her.

Shortly after approaching Kirri in the gallery, Daniel soon discovers that Kirri doesn't recognise him or have any idea who he is. Daniels finds it difficult to believe Kirri doesn't know who he is. With mixed emotions including confusion and disbelief, Daniel rushes out of the gallery and before he's knows it he's been hit by a car. From here the story has twists and turns, but will Kirri and Daniel ever be able to rekindle their love or will it stay lost forever?

I thoroughly enjoyed Black Ice by Aussie author Sandy Curtis. With twist, turns and romance this book definitely was a very entertaining read. Highly recommended.

Kirri Smith was an artist, and owned a gallery in Cairns. When American Daniel Brand wandered past her gallery on a short break before he headed to Sydney, he was shocked by a sense of familiarity with a picture in the window. On heading into the gallery, and spotting Kirri, he felt like he’d been hit by a brick! For Kirri was the beautiful young woman he had fallen in love with in New Orleans two years ago, and who had promised to be his wife. After her disappearance, he had spent countless hours looking for her, plus he hired a private investigator, to no avail. And now, here she was, in front of him, smiling, but only in a welcoming, professional manner. She didn’t know him…she didn’t seem to recognise him! Could she be acting? How could she not remember him? When he suddenly noticed a picture of a little girl, he asked Kirri who she was…Catelyn was Kirri’s daughter…

In total confusion, he rushed from the shop. He was angry, full of bitterness, but also he found there was a little bit of hope there too. Suddenly, the screeching of tyres announced the impending arrival of a vehicle, and he was hit hard and flung high in the air, hitting the pavement with a thud.

In the ensuing days, the police interviewed Daniel, and Kirri also visited the hospital. She couldn’t explain why she needed to be at the hospital, except to say that this man incited a feeling in her that she couldn’t work out…she needed to learn more about him. She sketched a profile of the man driving the vehicle which hit Daniel, though the police were sceptical at first.

Daniel was concerned about his business partner in Sydney, whose father had recently passed away, and the fact that he was evasive when he wanted to meet with him to view their financial statements. His suspicions were aroused further when another attempt was made on his life, albeit a supposed accident.

With Daniel in danger, and of course Kirri and Catelyn also in danger through association with Daniel, he tried desperately to find a motive for the attacks, and also to keep Kirri and Catelyn safe. But would he work out what was happening before it was too late? The horror he felt at losing Kirri again, after he had lost her two years ago tore at his heart! There was a killer out there who, it seemed, wouldn’t stop until Daniel was dead! Would he succeed?

I have wanted to read more of Aussie author Sandy Curtis for awhile, after reading a short story and being hooked some time back. I managed to download most of her books onto my kindle last year, so thought I’d start with this one, and I loved it! Extremely fast paced, with action the whole way through. Plenty of twists to keep the plot going, with some romance threaded through the pages.

Highly recommended.

4 Stars.
My first Sandy Curtis novel did not disappoint. Nicely paced and full of intrigue.

Just who is trying to kill American Daniel Brand? Only just finding the love of his life two years after she vanished, Daniel is faced with losing artist Kirri and sweet little Catelyn all over again.

There are some nicely placed clues to keep you interested, and all neatly wrapped up. Definitely interested in reading more from this author.

I have read this a few times and enjoyed it each time. I have never read the books in order though, they are stand alone stories with the characters taking their turns in centre stage.
This time I began with Dance with the Devil and I'm reading Sandy's books in their proper order. This was my first encounter with Sandy Curtis back in 2002 and hooked me from the beginning.

Black Ice by Sandy Curtis is a story you can really sink your teeth into.
A compelling page-turner with two wonderful central characters, Kirri and Daniel, they were brilliant together and gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. The flow of the story was superb: it never seemed to go too fast or too slow.
A highly entertaining read. Suspenseful, intriguing and engrossing.
