Elfquest #8.3

In All But Blood

Rate this book
They have been together since Cutter's birth.

In all the long history of the Wolfriders, there is no record of a friendship such as theirs. Other leaders and other advisors, yes. Other tribemates sharing adventures, certainly. Friends aplenty.

But there is something much more to the bond that exists between Cutter and Skywise, between chief and stargazer. Something that rivals even the unstoppable force of elfin Recognition.

Neither born of the same parents nor at the same time, what extraordinary trials have compelled these two to become "brothers in all but blood"?

Wendy Pini is one-half of a husband and wife team with Richard Pini that created, most notably, the Elfquest series.

Wendy was born in California and adopted into the Fletcher Family in Santa Clara County. Early on, she developed as an artist and was the illustrator of her high school year book. She submitted samples of her artwork to Marvel Comics at 17 that were rejected.

Pini attended Pitzer College and received her B.A. in the Arts and joined the Los Angeles Science Fiction Society.

In 1972, she married Richard Pini and began illustrating science fiction magazines, including Galaxy, Galileo, and Worlds of If. In 1977, Richard and Wendy established a publishing company called Warp Graphics to publish their first Elfquest comic. Elfquest was self-published for 25 years and in 2003, licensed to DC Comics. The comic series has won several awards, including the Ed Aprill Award for Best Independent Comic, two Alley Awards, the Fantasy Festival Comic Book Awards for Best Alternative Comic, and the Golden Pen Award.

Wendy has illustrated other works, including Jonny Quest in 1986, Law and Chaos in 1987, and in 1989, two graphic novels of Beauty and the Beast. Recently in 2007, she completed a graphic novel entitled The Masque of Red Death.

Wendy has received several awards over the last four decades, including the San Diego Comic Convention Inkpot Award, the New York State Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, the Balrog Award for Best Artist, and was inducted into the Friends of Lulu Women Cartoonists Hall of Fame in 2002.

Wendy and her husband currently reside in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Skywise has always been one my favorites and I am so in love with the relationship between him and Cutter. These were such great stories.

Yup. Yet another re-read. This collection is absolutely fantastic in the way it explores the unique relationship of Cutter and Skywise.

Four stories about Cutter and Skywise.

First, an adventure with Skywise and Cutter as kids. Cutter gets captured by trolls and then stays with them as a point of honor.

Second, set when Wolfriders were in the sun village, three different ladies are hoping for recognition with Skywise.

Third, after the palace has landed in the future. Skywise is feeling the age difference between him and Cutter and gets himself in trouble with some humans.

Fourth, sometime after the third story. The Wolfriders travel back to their original holt which was burned out back in Elfquest # 1. A teenage Suntop is really the main character. The Wolfriders have trouble growing a new father tree. Suntop goes on his own quest to find the source of the dark magic holding them back.

Nowhere in my copy does it tell me where these stories were originally printed. The art is black-and-white, sometimes pen and ink and sometimes gray tones. The drawing is mostly good. The gray tones are inconsistent. One page, Suntop will have dark skin and another he won't. I hate this haphazard collection format. When did Cutter and Leeta adopt a human?

Read on the ElfQuest.com website as part of my Great ElfQuest Read of 2025. I don't own a physical copy of this one.

I hadn't read this volume before, but somehow I had read the second story at some point. It must have been printed somewhere else.

I love Cutter and Skywise. The last story felt like it had less to do with them and more with Suntop (who I either didn't know, or forgot, ends up being called Sunstream).

The art is really nice but the black and white lacks the shading of Dreamtime.

I really hope I can figure out how I read the second story but not the rest of them.

EDITED TO ADD: it was in ElfQuest: The First 20 Years, which I do own.

Cutter and Skywise's lifelong bond, how it came to be, and how it has saved them. Another beautifully illustrated work.
