Dope/Help is a moving, heart-wrenching chronicle of a young girl's struggle with drug addiction—from early experimentation, to her untimely death and the repercussions for her family.
Most of Dope Help’s text comes from personal journals and letters to the author, Marie Allen, from her addicted daughter, Erin.
The book was published to fulfill Erin's wishes to educate young people about the dangers of drugs and the devastating effect they can have on adolescent lives.
Marie Allen is a Delaware native. She lives in Wilmington with her husband, daughter and granddaughter. For the past eight years, she has dedicated her life to educating young people about the perils of addiction. After the tragic death of her oldest daughter, Erin, Marie began educating and assisting families in crisis.
Marie began working with The New Castle County Police and Paramedics Heroin Alert Team in 1998. Marie’s efforts have been cited in numerous newspapers over the years. She has received several awards for exemplary community service through education.
Ms. Allen has testified before the United State Senate in Washington, D.C. and in Dover for improved addiction treatment.
I'm not going to say too much here because this is a sore spot for me. The author Marie Allen does a lot of work around my area because her and her family lived about a half hour away from me when this was all happening. She continues to talk at a lot of the local schools and try to help as much as possible with letting children and young adults know the risks involved with drugs. This 'book' is more like a glorified pamphlet and I don't mean that in a bad way. I have an immense amount of respect for Marie and love for her daughter as well. This book details what she and her daughter went through while drugs were making their lives spiral out of control. I don't know if it was a blessing or a curse that I witnessed parts of that life. Marie does a great job of getting through to the reader and this is probably a great choice for some help with talking to your kids. I kept a copy for my daughter when she's old enough and I hope and pray that maybe it'll help me get through to her, like Marie wasn't able to get through to her baby girl.
