The story is very much a product of its time and can only be read in the historical context of the late 1960s. Gordon focuses on the medical drama, on a male-centric world of doctors and their heavy responsibilities, and on the uneasy race relations of the time. He does a good job overall, and I looked forward to my commute so that I could keep reading.

"The Death Committee" is very different than other books I've ready by Gordon. Besides being set in the modern era, he decided to tackle pressing social issues, especially how a person's ethnic origins color others' view of that individual and how those origins can be a catalyst for renouncing such a stereotype.

You come to generally like Adam (despite his yucky way with women) and you appreciate the wit of Spurgeon (…the surgeon). Dr. Longwood you could happily have die off, along with the elitist type of medicine that he represents.

The women in the book, however, are flakes. They're anxious, or flighty, or utterly unpredictable, or nymphomaniacs, or some combination of the above. Gordon also calls the female doctors (who play tiny, insignificant roles) "girls." Maybe he decided he couldn't tackle race relations AND equal employment opportunities for women in the same book.

Leí este libro tras leer el médico y la verdad es que fue un gran error. El problema es que terminas de leerlo y te queda la sensación de haber asistido a una serie de historias durante su gran número de páginas y no haber llegado a ninguna conclusión. Desde luego la trama trepidante que prometía la sinopsis yo no la encontré.

Por lo que veo en comentarios, este libro no le hace justicia al escritor.
Incluso leyéndolo en el contexto de los años 60, se me ha hecho insoportable como están escritos los personajes femeninos, que solo están ahí por ser los intereses amorosos de los médicos, incluso cuando menciona a doctoras o enfermeras.
Me hubiera gustado que la trama se enfocase más en el “Comité de la Muerte”, con más contenido bioético, como promete la sinopsis, que fue la idea que me atrajo al libro. Se centra más en la vida de varios médicos. En todo el libro se mencionan como 4 comités.
Creo que la traducción al castellano es bastante mala, lo que ayudó a que no me atrapase. Es difícil de seguir con tantos personajes.
La parte que más me ha gustado es leer cómo funcionaba la medicina de los 60, los tratamientos, los transplantes, es interesante ver lo diferente que es hoy día.
Da visibilidad a los problemas raciales de la época a través de uno de uno de los protagonistas: un médico afroamericano. Al parecer no pudo hacer lo mismo con el patriarcado.

Slow, but captivating, character-driven novel in 1960's? Boston. Follows three male surgeons in and out of a run-down, but busy hospital. The female characters are a bit neurotic, but also well-drawn. I'm looking forward to reading more from this United States author, who seems to be better-known in Spanish-speaking countries for his translated works than for those written in his native language. A shame, really.

Este año ha sido bastante productivo en cuanto a lectura se refiere. No me he tenido en cambio la oportunidad de escribir en el blog. Por más que me propongo este ejercicio acaba siendo relegado por alguna otra ocupación inesperada.

Me había propuesto redactar una carta por cada libro que leyera y ya me atrasé, no puedo prometer ponerme al corriente, pero quiero hablar del libro que recién terminé.

Su título es “El comité de la muerte” y su autor Noah Gordon. Situada en los la década de 1960 en Boston, el libro narra las historias de un grupo de cirujanos del Hospital General del Condado de Sufflok, pioneros en el mundo del transplante.

Para empezar he de mencionar que la traducción deja muchísimo que desear, leí la edición de Roca Libros y tuve que, confieso, buscar la versión en inglés, encontrando por ahí un PDF del mismo y honestamente me dolía el codo pagar nuevamente por un libro cuando no fue mi culpa que se haya escogido una traducción mala y su revisión posterior también. Con múltiples saltos en el tiempo y terminología médica es un libro que si además cuenta con una traducción y redacción en castellano deficiente, se vuelve una lectura compleja incluso para los que nos desenvolvemos en el mundo de la Medicina.

El título hace alusión a que semanalmente el servicio de Cirugía del Hospital del Condado se reúne para evaluar los casos de muertes y valorar si estas eran o no prevenibles, en realidad durante el libro poco se tocan estas situaciones, si acaso hay tres sesiones mencionadas.

Como comentaba, el libro no trata de una sola historia, sino de varias, ya que analiza la perspectiva de vida de distintos personajes, desde el médico afroamericano que trata de salir adelante a pesar de su color de piel, cuya infancia fue difícil y que a pesar que posteriormente se vio apoyado económicamente por su padre adoptivo intentó salir adelante por si mismo. El médico cubano que huye de la guerra poco antes de la batalla de Bahía Cochinos y se hace de un lugar en el gremio médico en una de las ciudades con más prestigio dentro de los Estados Unidos y el mundo entro. Aquel cuya vida siempre ha sido compleja, hijo de un judío adicto al alcohol y una madre italiana, cuya economía siempre lo hizo luchar contra corriente, etc.

Es un libro histórico, el segundo de Noah Gordon y el primero en el que, como en futuras ocasiones, decidió inmiscuirse en el mundo de la Medicina, tema que sabemos le llamó la atención al grado de haber iniciado la carrera que luego dejó para estudiar la de periodismo.

La novela no se acerca en nada a “El Médico” LA OBRA cumbre de este autor, que aunque me gustan algunos de sus libros, creo, jamás ha tenido uno igual, ni siquiera los pertenecientes a la misma trilogía, o “La Bodega” donde ingresa a la historia de otro mundo que me llama la atención, la enología.

Lo más rescatable del libro es que nos permite ver las dificultades ante las que se enfrentaba el gremio médico cuando iniciaban los transplantes, el aún temido rechazo al órgano, etc. La verdad lo esperaba con mayor contenido bioético basado en el título, con más referencias históricas, pero me dejó a deber.

El autor es uno de mis favoritos, aunque esta novela si fue una verdadera decepción, yo tuve la sensación al iniciar la lectura de entrar a la mitad de una obra de teatro y cuando terminé el libro es la misma sensación de abandonar dicha obra de teatro cuando aun no cae el telón.

Es una novela de estilo coral con un ritmo lento y cansino falto de un adecuado contexto, en ciertas partes se tiene la sensación de que el autor desea terminar su trabajo de manera rápida, deja algunos detalles al descubierto, con personajes sin capacidad de reflexión y problemas cotidianos sin resolver.

Es notable que no utiliza la medicina para dar datos o situaciones morbosas, pero eso es algo que el autor nunca ha hecho, sin embargo, los libros de más de 400 páginas merecen tener un poco más de contenido.

Sí que es cierto que al introducir los personajes se hace un tanto lento y cansino, pero como siempre es justo y necesario esa introducción. Podría haberla abordado de una manera más corta y concisa. Aunque es un libro que no se puede considerar “corto” si que es cierto que te encariñas un poco con los personajes pero sin mucha información respecto a ellos. No se profundiza mucho en sus pensamientos ni maneras de ser. Se trata demasiado superficial para mi gusto.

Un libro que me ha decepcionado, por las expectativas que le tenia al autor. No obstante intentaré leer algo más “nuevo” o posterior a los libros que ya me he leído de él a ver si me vuelvo a reencontrar con ese Noah Gordon del que me fasciné.

Tras haberme maravillado con El médico, empecé a leer otras cosas del autor, y claro, te encuentras con que El médico fue lo mejor que escribió con diferencia y te deprimes un poco.
Este libro, escrito a finales de los 60, es un poco parecido a La casa de Dios, de Samuel Shem. Habla de la vida de tres residentes en un hospital de Boston. El comité de la muerte del título se refiere al grupo que se reúne cuando hay un fallecimiento, para estudiar si ha habido negligencia y cosas así.
Hay mil pequeñas historias en el libro, y algunas están muy bien, pero viniendo del El médico, sinceramente, todo me supo a poco. Dos estrellas y media que redondeo.

Tokia įdomi knyga, iš anotacijos tikėjaus visai ko kito negu pateikė siužetas.
Šiek tiek vis painiojausi tarp visų gydytojų, juos atskirti padėjo tik jų "merginos, žmonos". 🙈 Gal tiesiog per daug panašūs ir sudėtingi vardai, pavardės parinkti. 🤔
Dar vienas minusas, kad aprašomi bandymai su gyvūnais, ir dar šunimis...šios dalys man labai labai nepatiko.🥺
Paliečiama ir diskriminacija dėl odos spalvos, o gal tai net viena pagrindinių temų šioje knygoje.
Bet noriu labai pagirti autorių dėl to, kaip jis perteikė medikų gyvenimo ritmą, skaitant galvojau, gal jis pats buvęs medikas arba artimas žmogus iš tos aplinkos. Nes man skaitant, tai kuri neturi nieko bendro su medicina, atrodė viskas realistiškai, aišku nežinau, gal tikriems medikams taip ir neatrodytų 🤔

I didn't really connect with this book. The book is about three interns at a hospital. They are overshadowed by the "Death committee" where their actions relating to a death are investigated. The book focuses on them as doctors and their personal life over that year.

It was originally published in 1969 and times have changed a bit. I thought it was ok but it didn't wow me. It didn't really hold my attention and I had to put it down a lot.

This book follows the lives and struggles of several interns at a Boston public hospital in the 60's. I enjoyed the book because it presented the good and the bad in their lives as they struggle through their year of internship. There was the story of one particular resident whom I had decided that I didn't like much, but at the end I realized that he was, as all of us are, sometimes fallible, yet in the end he surprised me by doing something so completely selfless that it brought me to tears. We can never truly know what goes on in the lives of others, and the characters in this book illustrate that completely. I don't want to give any specific details, but I hope you will enjoy the book, as I did.

Since my wife and I both read this book, and since she is a nurse, she wrote this and allowed me to help:

The Massachusetts-born novelist Noah Gordon has not been heard from in about a decade, but to expect otherwise would be selfish, he is pushing 90 years of age.

A musical version of his 1986 novel, "The Physician" is announced for 2016. That is probably not good news. Gordon's well-researched multi-themed novel, set in the middle-ages, is about the progress of orphan Rob Cole from traveling sideshow juggler and barber's assistant to highly trained surgeon. It is an epic and multi-themed continent-spanning pageant. A musical treatment can only be a trivialization. And "The Physician" is only the first of three novels in the "Cole Trilogy", the others tell of Cole descendants: one set in the civil war, followed by one with a reproductive-rights theme.
Gordon writes with understanding, and he seldom strikes the false notes found in fiction about medicine.

"The Death Committee" lacks the depth that Gordon will give seventeen yeas later to the Cole novels, but it is like opening a time capsule and finding a mid-1960's city hospital and its inhabitants. It enters the imagination as from a grainy black and white TV screen. We see the good, the bad and the ugly...all are still with us, but in different forms.

Since the book came out in the 1960's it is self-consciously inclusive. The primary characters are male physicians (Hispanic, African-American, Jewish and Waspy). Their flaws and virtues are fairly well-drawn, and these characters drive the novel, especially when confronting ethical issues.

As for the women: nurses are either old and flinty (with deeply-hidden soft hearts), or young, nervous and fumbling. There are also some "girl" doctors - but we see little of them.

At the fictional "Suffolk General Hospital" in Boston, patient outcomes, not amenities, seem to be the key determinant in patient satisfaction. Medicine here is much more about practice, and less about theory.

The novel is both a dated historical curiosity and an interesting entertainment. Some hospital people will read this to see what we narrowly escaped, others will read it to remember what they survived - and perhaps to mourn values that have been lost. For others, it will be a vivid view of remote bad old days.

Labai daug įdomių minčių apie ligas ir mirtį. Gydytojų ,,mirties komitetas" svarsto kiekvieną mirties atvejį ir jų požiūris: gydytojas padarė klaidą, tai jam niu niu niu ir daugiau taip nedaryk...Bet juk mirė žmogus...Tiesiog mokinasi ant žmonių...Bet iš kitos pusės, o ką daryti? Kaip išmokti? Ir kaip visus atvejus numatyti? Tiesiog didžiulė pagarba gydytojams: kiek jie turi turėti žinių...

This is my second Noah Gordon book. In this book, three young doctors are doing their residency at the Suffolk County General hospital. Each doctor is talented and goal driven. Each also comes from differing backgrounds, culturally and because of the unique family history of each one. Rafael Meomartino is Hispanic. Spurgeon Robinson is African American. Adam Silverstone is Jewish. In addition an older doctor, Dr. Harland Longwood figures prominently in the book. It is Dr. Longwood who conducts the death committee, which meets any time a patient does not survive. The question the committee must determine is if the death was avoidable or unavoidable. If it is deemed avoidable, then they determine how it could have been avoided. No one is punished for the death, but they all are expected to learn from it. Obviously it is a high stress time for the officiating doctor! Dr Longwood also happens to be the father-in-law of Rafael Meomartino. The book covers one year in the lives of these doctors, and each chapter bears the title of the name of one of the doctors. The story is revealed in each chapter through the experiences of one of the doctors, though because there is a lot of interaction between the doctors the others often figure into it. It is an interesting book in that the reader learns not only what is currently happening, but through flashbacks, learns each doctor's personal story. The book is very life realistic. Things work out better for some of them than others. Eventually the book just ends, with the reader having some sense, but no certainly, about how their lives will continue to unfold.

After I read the book "The Physician" again and saw the movie, I was expecting a similarly gripping story in this book, triggered by the German title "The Clinic". Unfortunately, I liked the book not so much and I was wondering why it received so many good reviews 45 years ago. To me it is clearly a "first work" and not necessarily a book I would recommend, in contrast to some other works of Gordon.

Nachdem ich das Buch "Der Medikus" nochmals gelesen hatte und auch den Film gesehen, erwartete ich eine ähnlich packende Geschichte in diesem Buch, ausgelöst durch den Titel. Leider gefiel mir das Buch nicht so gut und ich habe mich gewundert, weshalb das Buch vor 45 Jahre so gute Kritiken bekommen hat. Für mich ist es deutlich ein "Erstlingswerk" und nicht unbedingt ein Buch, das ich weiter empfehlen würde; im Gegensatz zu manche andere Werke von Gordon.

Un des premiers romans écrits par l'auteur, en 1969.
Je suis un peu déçu, l'histoire est trop lisse, sans vraiment "justifier" le titre du livre. Les États Unis des années 60, avec les problèmes raciales qui sont abordés. Un peu trop de jargon médical, j'aimerai bien comprendre de quoi on parle quand je lis un roman. Et un fin "politiquement correcte" : le Noir avec les noirs, le Blanc qui reussi et le Cubain qui est abandonné par sa femme américaine et qui s'en va à la guerre.
Point positif: j'aime beaucoup la façon donc l'auteur a structuré l'histoire: chacun des personnages est bien décrit, et on vit l'histoire avec leurs yeux.
